CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

What a privilege it is to welcome everyone back to Flemington for the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival 2022 – Penfolds Victoria Derby Day. Two years ago in the midst of the pandemic, Derby Day racing went ahead without any racegoers at Flemington. Last year, as necessary lockdowns eased, limited numbers could be here on course. Today we are back in full force and the Victoria Racing Club could not be more delighted. For all who love racing, this is the blue ribbon day of the Australian turf. Our

Penfolds Victoria Derby here at Flemington traces its history back to 1855, the oldest continuing classic in Australia. On page 24, we take a look at past champions of the Derby. We revere it as the race that produces future champions such as Phar Lap back in 1929 and in more recent times Grosvenor in 1982, Mahogany in 1993, and Hitotsu in 2021 – only the third horse in history to win the Derby and go on to win the Australian Guineas in the Autumn. Every race today is at Group level, with three Group 1s to be decided, setting the scene for an exceptional Melbourne Cup Carnival. Always a highlight, the Lexus Hotham Stakes offers a last opportunity for the winner to gain automatic exemption from the ballot and join the field for Tuesday’s Lexus Melbourne Cup. Last year I could say with pride how we had worked with health professionals, essential workers and everyone in the racing industry to enable the sport we love to continue uninterrupted throughout the hard times. Our loyal members and partners maintained their support to enable us to open the gates to all at Flemington to enjoy in person the excitement and elegance of Penfolds Victoria Derby Day.

Penfolds Victoria Derby Day

By Andrew Lemon

24

“It’s the horses, the champions and future champions, first and foremost that draw us each year to Flemington Racecourse. They are the reason for the celebration, the party, the fun and fashion, the crowds, the roses, lawns and the gardens.”

1957 Victoria Derby winner Tulloch at trackwork (VRC Collection)

25

T he Penfolds Victoria Derby at Flemington has a story dating back 167 years to 1855 in the gold rush era. We celebrate it as Australia’s oldest classic. Its name connects it to other famous Derby races around the world, the acknowledged champion races for the best three-year-olds of each year. The original was the English Derby, first run at Epsom Racecourse outside London in 1780. Derby Day in the English spring soon became one of Britain’s high days. Sydney’s Australian Derby, now run in the autumn, traces its origins to 1861, the same year as the first Melbourne Cup, six years after the first Derby at Flemington. The Kentucky Derby, the most coveted race in the United States of America, began in 1879. So many winners of these classics have gone on to become the great thoroughbred sires of future generations. A Derby winner carries true prestige. The Derby is the blue ribbon of the turf, so it is no coincidence that the Melbourne Cup Carnival flower for Derby Day is the blue cornflower. The Penfolds Victoria Derby is officially open to three-year-old colts, geldings and fillies. In practice, the best staying fillies aim instead for the VRC Kennedy Oaks. But in colonial days, nine of the first 22 winners of the Derby happened to be fillies. One was the brilliant Briseis who –

1948 Victoria Derby winner Comic Court, went on to win the 1950 Melbourne Cup for trainer Jim Cummings, father of legendary trainer Bart. (VRC Collection)

26

uniquely in Australian racing history – also won a Melbourne Cup and the VRC Oaks in the same week. Auraria almost matched this feat in 1895: she finished third in the Derby to the great Wallace, son of Carbine, before stepping out to win the Melbourne Cup three days later, and then the VRC Oaks. She ran again on the final Saturday, dead-heating with Wallace in the C.B. Fisher Plate. No trainer would dare follow that script today! In the 145 years since the victory of Briseis, only five other fillies won the Derby, and none since Frances Tressady 99 years ago. The last filly to be placed was Born To Be Queen in 1985. In earlier days it was no surprise for Victoria Derby winners to come out three days later and win the Melbourne Cup. Skipton in 1940 was the last to do this. He followed in the footsteps of Hall Mark, Trivalve, Patrobas, Prince Foote, Poseidon, Merriwee, Newhaven, Martini- Henry, Grand Flaneur and Chester, champions all. The 1995 Victoria Derby winner Nothin’ Leica Dane came close, finishing third to Doriemus in the Cup. Derby winners Phar Lap in 1929 and Efficient in 2006 also won a Melbourne Cup, but in the following year, as four-year-olds. Other Derby winners who went on to win the Cup as older horses are Spearfelt, Delta and Comic Court. Racing royalty, all.

27

Other Victoria Derby champions of the past? Almost too many to mention. Several stand proudly in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. Next to Phar Lap, the mighty Tulloch rates highest. Then there’s Tobin Bronze, Sailors’ Guide, Dulcify, Mahogany … the list goes on. Last year’s winner Hitotsu joined a select company who could also claim an Australian Derby and a VRC Australian Guineas to their name. It is also a day to honour champion jockeys and trainers. Bart Cummings trained five Victoria Derby winners, and his father Jim, his son Anthony and grandson James one each. That’s eight for the family. But the training record belongs to James Scobie who prepared eight Victoria Derby winners himself, stretching from Maltster in 1900 to Hua in 1937. Jockey Bobbie Lewis was associated with six of Scobie’s wins, and won twice more, eight in total. Damien Oliver, within striking distance of Lewis’s record, has won the Victoria Derby six times, and the VRC Oaks seven times. Among the race’s most honoured names is Clare Lindop, the first woman to ride a winner of the Derby, on outsider Rebel Raider in 2008. For everyone at Flemington, Penfolds Victoria Derby Day brings anticipation and quality, elegance and style all of its own. It is Group- level racing, all day. It is the Melbourne Cup Carnival opening day. A day for champions.

EQUINE WELFARE

HERE FOR THE FOR HORSES

BY CELIA PURDEY

Racing Victoria’s ‘Medicare for horses’ or Diagnostic Imaging Subsidy is another way that the racing industry is helping to protect the health and welfare of our racehorses. First trialled as a pilot program from June 2021, the program is aimed at encouraging trainers and owners to use advanced technologies for early detection and intervention for racehorses at potential risk of injury. Racing Victoria (RV) will pay half of a range of scans, including scintigraphy (bone scanning), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (high field/standing) and computed tomography (CT). RV will also provide grants of up to $300 for specialist appointments and $200 for a racehorse who requires hospitalisation overnight. Trainers who claim the scanning subsidy will be able to save up to $1600. “We’ve had some really positive feedback, and there’s been some particular stories of owners and trainers that would definitely not have been able to afford this type of advanced diagnostic imaging because of the cost, who’ve been able to make use of this technology to diagnose an injury at an early stage in their horse, ” said Grace Forbes, General Manager, Veterinary Services, RV. “This is really exciting because it means that our trainers and owners can see the value in detecting injuries early, and that’s because it means when they detect an injury at an early stage, they can manage that injury and the horses are out of work for a much shorter time than if the horses sustains a more serious injury and needs to have a much longer break.” Trainers have welcomed the subsidy scheme, as it removes the financial hurdles they may have when wanting to use the advanced screening technologies. Trainer Kylie Vella has used the scheme to help pinpoint lameness and the potential issues it may cause. “Going in and having the bone

30

scans and the MRIs is just great. You can go on forever not knowing what your issues are and you don’t actually get to the bottom of it. This way, it actually works out cheaper in the long run because even though it’s quite an expense at the start, you’re not constantly re-Xraying or scanning to try and find an issue. You go in and have it done and it’s pinpointed straight away.” Matt Cumani agrees with Vella and is delighted with the program. “Where I can, I always talk to other trainers about it and particularly my owners. As soon as we have a horse that has a little issue that we want to know more about, and we can’t get to the bottom of it through normal, cheaper tests or clinical assessments, I always propose it as a gold-standard approach, and the owners have been very receptive.” He also sees it as a huge positive for the industry as a whole. “The more that we use it and can come up with clear and concise diagnostics, I think that’s got to help with the long-term health of the industry, and for each individual horse.”

Won by some of the greats of the turf including Briseis, Grand Flaneur, Poseidon, Manfred, Phar Lap, Tulloch, Tobin Bronze, Dulcify and Mahogany, among its more recent winners are Lexus Melbourne Cup winner Efficient and runner-up Nothin’ Leica Dane, globetrotting star Elvstroem and prolific stallions Blackfriars, Rebel Raider and Tarzino. It has also been a Lexus Melbourne Cup lead-up at times, with Arena in 1998 the last winner to back up in the race that stops the nation. The last to complete the double was Skipton in 1941. Last year, the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Hitotsu - ridden by John Allen - became the first Penfolds Victoria Derby winner to be having his first start beyond a mile in the feature. He returned to win the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) here at Flemington in March.

SUSTAINABILITY AT FLEMINGTON

Sustainability is a key focus of the VRC. As a globally recognised event organisation, the VRC continues to look to mitigate its impact on the surrounding environment, with a focus on our own actions and educating our supply chains and patrons. SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY In order to achieve our sustainability vision of being a world leader in racing and event entertainment while balancing the needs of the environment and community, the VRC aims to: • Be a sustainable business, which manage and hold sustainable events that balances its operations with

the needs of the community. In order to do this we need to:

• Undertake internal sustainability activities to reflect and support external environmental initiatives, in line with our pillars of water, waste, energy and emissions, and other environmental sustainability. • Aspire to attain the highest standards in environmental performance, assisted by partnerships with leading businesses and suppliers, integrating considerations of total value into procurement and all decision making. • Continue to engage our stakeholders and the community to understand and meet their aspirations for the VRC.

38

WASTE

Melbourne Cup Carnival 2021 resulted in: • 86% Diversion rate from Landfill from event activities. • 10t of timber redistributed to Tintern Grammar to construct new stables and sheds. • Provided usable food and produce to the Les Twentyman foundation feeding 650 people in need.
