As Director of Campus Infrastructure and Operational Support Services I have responsibility for ensuring that the university benefits from a world-class physical and digital environment and services that support the University’s mission and vision to be a global 100 research leader. You will be joining at a transformational time for CIOSS. We have brought together 3 professional services teams to create CIOSS, a unified directorate that will deliver a world-class environment that places the University customers at the very heart of what we do. This new era together with our ambitious strategies to enhance our estate, digital, commercial services and sport & grounds offerings mean that you will join to play a key role within a dynamic environment with a strong sense of purpose and aspiration. The University of Exeter estate comprises over 360,000 square metres of academic, administrative, commercial and residential accommodation on 430 acres of land across Devon and Cornwall. We are currently in the early stages of a programme to invest c.£450m to deliver the physical and digital environment we need to support world-class research and an internationally excellent education, accommodating our students and our world leading academics in exceptional teaching, learning and research spaces. The Head of Sustainability is a newly created role reflecting the importance of improving the University of Exeter’s environmental performance. You will act as the catalyst to drive forward our environmental & sustainability strategy and lead on all environmental and sustainability initiatives. The role is fully accountable for the success in devising and delivering the University’s Sustainability Plan, Waste Management Plan, Sustainable Travel Plan, Energy Plan in addition to our Biodiversity Policy. These developments further our commitment to research excellence and follow our largest investment in research to date; the £52 million Living Systems Institute (LSI) on our Streatham Campus. The LSI seeks to revolutionise disease prevention through predictive biology and houses over 200 scientists from a wide range of disciplines. This development complements the Environment and Sustainability Institute in Penryn which provides an interdisciplinary centre to lead cutting-edge research into the consequences of environmental change and the mitigation and management of its effects. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), the University ranked 16th nationally, with 98% of its research rated as being of international quality, and in 2017, was awarded a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) assessment. We are consistently ranked amongst the UK’s top universities in the Higher Education league tables produced by The Times and The Sunday Times, The Guardian and The Complete University Guide, as well as amongst the world’s top 200 universities in the QS and Times Higher Education global rankings. Exeter has always been among the leaders for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey. Our senior management team has sought to build on this strength by putting student services at the centre of our organisational strategy. The Students’ Guild and FXU (the students’ unions in Exeter and Cornwall respectively) are involved at the earliest stages of strategic planning and given a major role in making spending decisions through a specially created Student Experience Advisory Group. The result of this partnership can be seen in the landmark student services centres and hubs across our campuses including the Forum in Exeter which provides dedicated student support, careers advice, a 400 seat lecture theatre, shop and several cafés. The Exchange provides a similar centerpiece for our Penryn Campus. Key to our successes are our two Cornwall Campuses: the Truro Campus, located at the Knowledge Spa near the Royal Cornwall Hospital, and the Penryn Campus, which is unique in the country for its joint use of space with the highly respected Falmouth University. There we work closely with Falmouth Exeter Plus (FX Plus), the service delivery partner of Falmouth University and the University of Exeter, responsible for the delivery of shared services and facilities at Penryn and Truro ensuring that the interests of students and employees are at the heart of everything we do. FX Plus is an exempt charity wholly owned by the University of Exeter and Falmouth University on a 50:50 basis. To support our future students, the University has also set up a Centre for Social Mobility with the aim of helping all students to realise their potential through Higher Education. We have hosted residential courses, run outreach programmes, and created progression schemes to help under-represented students become part of the Exeter community.

The University of Exeter’s Green Flag awarded Penryn, Streatham and St Luke’s Campuses are acknowledged as the most beautiful and botanically interesting of any UK University. Streatham Campus is described by The Times as the ‘best-gardened campus in Britain’ and by The Independent as having a ‘sublime’ setting. The Streatham Campus is a registered botanical garden that is home to specialist plant collections including the National Collection of Azara in co-operation with Plant Heritage and the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens. The University’s Capital Strategy outlines our commitment to invest £468m in our estate, facilities and infrastructure over the next ten years as long as we meet the planned financial savings targets we have set ourselves. Main duties and accountabilities:

Main purpose of the role

The Head of Sustainability is a new role reporting to the Assistant Director of Direct Works & Engineering reflecting the growing importance of improving the institution’s environmental performance and its sustainability.

The Head of Sustainability for the University of Exeter will be accountable for achieving the following key objectives:

• Act as the catalyst to drive forward the University’s environmental and sustainability strategy and agenda • Design, develop and implement the University’s Sustainability strategy and to set the organisational priorities in partnership with management, staff and stakeholders • Lead on key environmental and sustainable initiatives across the estate • To co-ordinate and encourage sustainability action throughout the University • Ensure that the University always complies with environmental legislation and requirements
