A warm and friendly welcome back to all our families to start Term 3. Term 3 is a very important term for schools. In fact, I would consider it the time where students can make the most learning progress as their confidence continues to grow, school routines are well established, and we are still well away from the energy and excitement of the end of the year. Along with our focus and commitment to high levels of academic achievement and personal development, we have a jam - packed calendar of events and activities this term. During busy terms like this, it is vital to stay informed by reading the newsletter, reading emails and logging into Sentral regularly. It is also a great idea to keep a family calendar with all of the important things listed on it. Why not encourage your child to do this as well? They could even use the calendar function on an iPad or another form of technology. This would be great preparation for secondary school when there are even more dates to remember such as homework and assignments from at least seven different teachers!

LOTS OF EXCURSIONS & EVENTS – SENTRAL PERMISSIONS

NAPLAN Changes explained

This is a reminder that we need your support in finalising permissions and payments to any events, excursions or activities by the date issued on the excursion form. Excursions and incursions certainly offer our students rich and engaging learning opportunities, but they are also a significant load for our staff to organise and run. Making sure you have completed the permissions via SENTRAL allows time for staff to make final checks on numbers and print out all the required paperwork and handbooks. These include the emergency contact details of those that attend so that in the case of an emergency we can ensure we have everything we need. These handbooks are printed and distributed to all staff attending and a copy is also left at the school office. Our staff need to complete this on the day before the event to minimise all the other requirements needed to do on the day itself. This process will be strictly enforced. We will be unable to make telephone calls home after the date to follow up any missing permissions. If you are having trouble accessing Sentral, need a hard copy of a permission form or require support to make a payment please let the office team know. We do not want any students to miss out on these opportunities and will do everything to support you prior to the day to ensure that everything is organized as it should be.

DATES TO REMEMBER

• 1 st and 2 nd August – Whole School Production – Primary students will be divided up across the 2 nights (A - K Tuesday 1 st August, L - Z Wednesday 2 nd August). Student drop off is a 5.30pm for a 6pm start at Plenty Rangers Arts & Convention Centre, 35 Ferres Blvd, South Morang. The Parent/Carer Fundraising Committee will be running a raffle on the night. More information about this will be sent out to families. • 3rd August – Curriculum Day – on this pupil free day our staff will be working on how we teach numeracy across the school and, developing student agency and well - round and resilient learners.

GETTING TO SCHOOL ON TIME!

As I walk around our school each morning, I often see many students arriving late. This year we introduced a slightly earlier bell with the aim being to provide students the opportunity to enter their classroom, say hello to their teachers and get organised for the day which starts at 9am sharp. We need all students to arrive no later than 8.55am so that we can maximise our learning each day. Arriving at 9am when the second bell goes is late. You would be amazed at the effect of even a few minutes late each day can have over a longer time frame.

BREAKFAST CLUB!

A small change with Breakfast Club this semester with it now running on a Wednesday morning from 8.15am - 8.45am. We look forward to seeing as many students as possible having a piece of toast, some fruit or a glass of milk during this time.

FACILITY UPGRADES!

It was wonderful to come back after the break to see several improvements across both campuses.

On the Primary Campus, the Prep and Year 1 space have been recarpeted.

This is the first step in improving spaces across the campus, with the Year 2/3 space next to be carpeted and toilets to be refurbished and upgraded over the next 12 months. Outdoor spaces will also be upgraded over the next 12 months to give our school a sense of pride. On our Secondary Campus, new carpet, walls in classrooms and furniture was purchased to uplift spaces and make areas more learner friendly.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Marcus

SCHOOL COUNCIL RAFFLE

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are writing to inform you about an exciting initiative organised by the School Council Fundraising Committee that will greatly enhance the outdoor spaces at both our primary and secondary campuses.

We are thrilled to announce that we will be hosting a fundraising raffle both nights of the school production . This raffle will raise funds for the installation of picnic benches and landscaping in our school grounds. The main objective behind this initiative is to provide our students with enjoyable places to socialise outside and have their lunch, while also creating a more vibrant and aesthetically pleasing environment. We strongly believe that providing students with comfortable and inviting outdoor spaces is crucial for their social development and well - being. These enhancements will create more opportunities for students to interact, relax, and enjoy nature during lunch breaks and free periods.

In order for us to achieve our goal and make these improvements, we need your support with purchasing raffle tickets . Tickets will be available to purchase on the night of the production. We will be selling them for $1 per ticket. The raffle will be drawn during the intermission break on both nights, so make sure you get in early to purchase your tickets.

Thank you in advance for your generosity and commitment to our school ’ s growth and improvement.

Furthermore, if you would like to assist with the organisation of future fundraising events please contact Amanda Farrelly, School Council President at amanda.farrelly@education.vic.gov.au We would love to increase our parent/carer involvement in this new and exciting Fundraising Committee.

Warm Regards,

Parent/Carer Fundraising Committee

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter NAPLAN CHANGES

Families this week in Years 3,5,7 and 9 would have received an email outlining changes to NAPLAN testing for 2023. Student achievement in NAPLAN is reported using proficiency standards for each assessment area at each year level. New proficiency standards with 4 levels of achievement will replace the previous 10 - band structure and the old national minimum standard set in 2008. The standards are set at a challenging but reasonable expectation of what students know and can do at the time of testing. There are 4 proficiency levels:

The proficiency level descriptions describe some of the skills and understandings students can generally demonstrate at the time of testing. The aim of the descriptions is not to describe each individual student, but to provide a fair summary of typical skills and understandings for a student at the level. It is important to note that individual students may demonstrate different skills or understandings depending on which parts of the tests they performed more strongly in. Students whose results fall near the top of a proficiency level will be able to demonstrate more of the skills, or more complex understanding. Students whose results fall near the lower end of a level will be able to demonstrate fewer of the skills, or less complex understanding. For national reporting, 2023 will mark the start of a new time series , now that all students are online, the tests are adaptive, and are being held in March instead of May.

Exceeding : the student ’ s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.

Strong : the student ’ s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing. Developing : the student ’ s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing. Needs additional support : the student ’ s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes that are expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.

Results from 2023 onwards will not be directly comparable with results from 2008 to 2022.

NAPLAN SCALE—NEW IS NOT COMPARABLE TO OLD

Both scales go from 0 to 1000 (from Year 3 to Year 9) but that is where the similarity ends

LEARNING AT HOME

FAMILY MATHS - STRIKE IT OUT

Age 5 and up!

The aim of the game:

The player who stops their opponent from being able to go wins the game.

How to play:

Start by drawing a number line from 0 to 20 like this:

The first player chooses a number on the line and crosses it out. The same player then chooses a second number and crosses that out too. Finally, he or she circles the sum or difference of the two numbers and writes down the calculation.

For example, the first player's go could look like this:

The second player must start by crossing off the number that player 1 has just circled. He or she then chooses another number to cross out and then circles a third number which is the sum or difference of the two crossed - off numbers. Player 2 also writes down their calculation.

For example, once the second player has had a turn, the game could look like this:

Play continues in this way with each player starting with the number that has just been circled. Once a number has been used in a calculation, it cannot be used again.

The game ends when one player cannot make a calculation. The other player is the winner.

It's your turn!

STUDENT REFLECTION HANAN & MIA YEAR 6 SRC

Hi everyone, it ’ s Hanan and Mia, your Year 6 SRC students! We ’ ve started Term 3 with a bang by having lots of production rehearsals for our Annual Production, “ Bring It On! ”. We ’ re excited to show the parents what we ’ ve been learning in Dance and creating our costumes. We also had an SRC meeting where we talked about buying some more classroom resources for students to use, we ’ re hoping we can purchase some bean bags for our quiet spaces in our classrooms. In the next few weeks, we should hopefully have some photos.... Stay tuned and keep warm!

5/6 BOYS NETBALL & GIRLS AFL KIARA T, OLIVIA V & JAHMIN S YEAR 6 GIRLS AFL Last Friday the 14 th of July, a group of lucky year 5’ s and 6’ s that were on the footy team got to go to Marymede for a day to compete against other schools in Interschool sport. Everyone was excited and ready to play from all the training we had beforehand. We got the opportunity to play 6 matches and we all had fun playing football and for some people trying a new sport. We lost 3 matches and won 3 matches and placed 4th out of 6 teams. We may not have come back with a flag or first place but we did have fun playing with our friends and got to try a different experience and everyone came back happy that we represented our school. Hopefully the year 5’ s will try out for the football team again next year because they had a really good time and for the year 6’ s it was a fun thing to do for our last year of primary! All of us were glad that we got the opportunity to play and we will definitely try out for more sports in the future.

Overall scores: A team = 4 th overall

6 games in total = Lost 3 games and won 3 games

It was a great day!

Overall scores: A team – runners up, 2 nd place

4 games in total = 2 wins and a draw, loss in grand final

SOCIAL SCENE

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter KISS AND DROP ZONE

Safety at The Lakes South Morang College is of utmost importance, please note with this in mind there will be some changes to our Kiss & Drop Zone in the morning on the Primary Campus.

As of the start of Term 3, parents/carers will not be able to access the staff carpark to drop students off. The Kiss & Drop Zone will now be via the slip lane on Lakes Boulevard (See below photo) and students can enter through the single gates near the SDS buildings. Students can still access the single gate on Gordons Road as normal but the double gates in the carpark will remain closed as of this date. As of 8:30 am and from 2.30pm the Staff Carpark will be locked. There are numerous car - parking areas all within walking distance, we recommend using the carparks in front of the school, at Coles or at The South Morang Football Oval which is a short 2 - 5 minute walk to the school. Please remember to use the official crossings on Lakes Boulevard or the two on Gordon ’ s Road when crossing the road.

Our Kiss & Drop Zone works well when we follow the rules. It is an effective and efficient way of dropping off in the morning. There are a few steps we need to follow to make this work:

1. Two - minute parking between 8:00 – 9:00 am and then again between 3:00 – 4:00pm.

2.

Move forward so that other cars can park safely.

3.

Stay in your car to let your child out.

4. Always let your child in & out from the passenger side – never the driver ’ s side.

5. If there are no places to park, go around again until a park is available.

6. Use other long - term parking that is within a short walking distance to the school.

7.

Be patient & observant.

8.

Safety before convenience.

We urge you to teach your children great care when exiting from or entering your vehicle when you deliver or pick them up.
