New Life Church gives new life to former church Richard.mahoney@eap.on.ca H AWKESBURY Twoyearsafteritwasclosed, theformer L’Église Ascension in Hawkesbury will soon be used as a place of worship once again. LeCentreChrétienViens etVois is in the process of buying the building located at Lansdowne and Mary Streets. The Centre, also known as New Life Church, has sold its current location on Lansdowne. That building is to be converted into condominiums. “The new location will permit us to serve the community better,” says JamesYank, pastor of theCentreViens et Vois, noting that L’Ascension is much larger than the Centre’s current premises. In addition to being a place of worship, the centre at Lansdowne and Laurier Streets has also housed La Soupière community kitchen and a Boutique de partage, which has provided thousands of used clothing items to the needy. “There are some technicalities to be completed” before the acquisition of the former Roman Catholic church has been finalized, the pastor related. Meanwhile, thenewowner of theCentreChrétienViens et Vois is planning to create ten condominium units at 926 Lansdowne St. A public meeting on the proposal is scheduled tobeheldOctober 17at 6:30p.m. at the Hawkesbury town hall. Before the project canproceed, the townmust approve a zoning change for the property. L’Ascension and another Roman Catholic church, St-Dominique on Bon Pasteur Street, havebeenvacant since June, 2009 when they were closed by the archdiocese. L’Ascension, which was erected in 1959, and St-Dominique, constructed in 1965, were later bought by private interests. The closures came after the archdiocese decided to consolidate the three French-speaking Roman Catholic congregations in Hawkesbury at St- Alphonse, the largest church intheSt-Pierre Apôtre parish.
