demands on their operations. To remain competitive, converters are in the market for strategies and technologies that will pro- vide them with a competitive differentiation. Whether that be on cost, speed, quality, flexibility or consistency, the challenges faced by today’s prepress and print converters are significant. Combine these demands with a lack of skilled labor availability and decreasing run lengths, the need for management teams to strategically address business digitization, automation and con- nectivity becomes clear. Around 90 percent of businesses today have adopted cloud technology in some form. This figure is only expected to rise,

with 69 percent considering moving additional appli- cations and services to the cloud. Flexo Market News spoke exclusively with Jan De Roeck, Marketing Director Industry Relations & Strat- egy at Esko, about the future of cloud technology and the ways in which it can help lead companies above their competition. Q) Why did Esko feel it was the right time to re- lease the report? What internal discussions led to the report’s release? A) Our transition from on-premise software toward a Cloud-based, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) plat-form has been has been going on for some time now.An import- ant supporting milestone happened last year with the publication of our Digital Maturity Model. Designed to help management teams meet the growing need to strategically address business digitization, automation and connection, the DMM was unveiled at the begin- ning of 2020, just as the scale of the global pandemic was be-coming apparent. While cloud computing is nothing new for Esko – our WebCenter and Cape Pack solutions are web-based – the relevance of this initiative grew throughout the year, as we were picking up insights and learnings from our customers’ operational challenges related to

for working remotely and sharing jobs between facto- ries to overcome supply chain instability. So here we are with the release of this new version of Automation Engine, which we now also roll out with a SaaS deploy- ment option. AICC Hosts Southeast Summit

AICC,The Independent Packaging Association, host- ed its Southeast Summit March 31-April 1 at the Gran- dover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina. The first “in-person” event for the corrugated and paperboard packaging industries in more than a year brought to- gether 65 AICC members and guests. Ben DeSollar,President and CEO of Sumter Packaging, Sumter, SC, and Director for AICC’s Southeast Region, chaired the meeting. The Summit featured speakers on the current state of the corrugated and containerboard business, a virtual plant tour of Packrite LLC, as well as a panel of boxmakers talking about how their busi- nesses have fared in the face of the COVID pandemic. AICC President Michael D’Angelo opened the meet- ing and presented a brief state of theAssociation, citing a membership retention rate of 94 percent; a surge in the use of AICC’s online Packaging School; and great- er member engagement in the past year on weekly membership zoom calls, virtual tours, converter think tank sessions and the use of the All-Access Pass for ed- ucation and training. He also introduced the Founda- tion for Packaging Education, chartered in the fall of 2020 by AICC’s Board of Directors to raise funds for the continued growth and expansion of industry-spe- cific training programs for employees inAICC member companies. A Look Ahead Mitch Klinger, a Partner at Klingher-Nadler in Engle- wood Cliffs,New Jersey, keynoted the meeting with his presentation called Looking Ahead at Market Force, Box Demand and How to Strategize . Klinger outlined the current state of the business: positive forces such as high box demand, record profits, and elevated levels of capital investment in the industry. On the negative side, he cited tightness in the con- tainerboard market with rising prices; supply chain in- terruptions in other basic materials; a shortage of good people; high-profile ransomware attacks on larger pa- per producers and, of course, the ongoing pandemic and its uncertainties. Klingher also looked at the ef- fects of high-speed converting on the business as more machinery suppliers roll out equipment with shorter set-up times and faster running speeds. He urged mem- bers to educate themselves and their customers about using lighter weight containerboard as a means to cost reduction and improved performance. RalphYoung,AICC’s Technical Advisor, picked up on Klingher’s presentation about lighter weight contain- erboard as he gave a rundown of the current North American paper market, especially the new capacity (Cont’d on Page 10)

And it does not come as a surprise that a number of important global market and industry drivers are the basis of an acceleration of workflow digitization and automation. In general terms, it’s fair to say that supply chains across the world are very unstable and fragile. The just-in-time principle is under a lot of pressure, suscep- tible to the smallest hiccup in the supply chain. And while we all immediately think about the impact of the global Covid pandemic, in the past 10 years we’ve seen many such incidents and accidents that created bottlenecks in supply chains - not only the supply of consumer goods, but also the supply of cartonboard and other substrates to the converters, and the supply

of packaging to the filling lines of brand owners.Think of “accidents” like the recent problem in Egypt’s Suez Canal, blocked by a huge container ship, or terrorist at- tacks, weather-related vulnerabilities, natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis, a volcano eruption in Iceland, globalization versus import and export pro- tectionism, the list goes on. Packaging converters realize more and more they need to organize in function of these supply chain hic- cups and invest in an infrastructure that allows them to respond very quickly. The cloud enables workflows to do exactly that. Q) What is the primary reason companies stumble in their planning to switch to a cloud- based operation? A) The whitepaper makes it clear that driving com- pany-wide transformation toward digital maturity is a multi-functional task, where the entire organization needs to engage if it is to truly receive the full suite of benefits on offer. It also requires cultural and proce- dural change at every level of the organization. (Cont’d on Page 11)

Cloud computing represents Having different employee groups, teams or facilities at different stages of digital maturity can create issues, leading to waste and a slowing down of the business. Businesses continue to be understandably confused by the terms, and wary of the IT overheads and in- evitable disruption to operations. But transitioning to the cloud makes businesses more efficient, resilient, and customer focused, and enables them to differen- tiate, build and protect. The cloud serves as a catalyst to enable innovation and to automate processes and systems. Moreover, it delivers a raft of additional bene- fits - from improved security against malware and data hackers to scalability of infrastructure, both up and down, depending on demand. Cloud computing allows a business to organize for peak capacity and systems availability, while saving time and effort on deploying version updates. And with all this, it gives the operators back their own “freedom” to no longer be worried about these IT challenges, and it allows them the freedom to focus on what matters most: creating added-value for the customer.

Manufacturers Step Up To Get America Vaccinated Following President Joe Biden’s call to employers across America to do everything they can to help their employees—and their communities—get vaccinated, National Association of Manufacturers President and CEO Jay Timmons released the following statement: “Vaccines are howwe get armed against COVID-19,pro- tect our loved ones, grow our economy and get back to the moments we miss. The hard work and innovation of America’s pharmaceutical manufacturers, coupled with the Biden administration’s laser focus on vaccine dis- tribution and the dedication of local vaccination teams across the country, have enabled the administration to double its lofty goal set for the first 100 days.” President Biden announced that he expects the na- tion to have administered 200 million shots within his first 100 days. He called on every employer in America to offer full pay to their employees for any time off needed to get vaccinated and announced a paid leave tax credit that will offset the cost for businesses with fewer than 500 employees. “Manufacturers remain absolutely committed to helping our teams get safely vaccinated,” Timmons added. “Through our ‘This Is Our Shot’ project, we’re making resources available to answer questions and share the facts about how these vaccines are safe and effective. Additionally, many manufacturers have sup- ported vaccination by giving employees time off to get vaccinated. With a new tax credit, it will be even easier for manufacturers and all employers to offer this op- tion. This is our shot to finally end this pandemic, so we’re going to keep working with the administration, state and local leaders and our member companies to get everyone vaccinated as soon as possible.” Launched earlier this year, ‘This Is Our Shot’, live at NAM.org/ThisIsOurShot , includes six main com- ponents: (1) science-based messaging research; (2) emergency industry convening and education, such as webinars; (3) an online vaccine information hub; (4) a PSA campaign; (5) the Yellow and Red Ribbon Ini- tiative (for vaccinated individuals to show their peers they’re a part of the fight); and (6) a rapid response media and digital campaign. Esko, the global developer of integrated software and hardware solutions for the packaging and labels markets, has collaborated with Asahi Photoproducts, developers of flexographic photopolymer plates, on the flexo platemaking solution. CrystalCleanConnect reportedly fully automates the entire platemaking process, from imaging and exposure through to plate production, reducing the number of steps in the flexo platemaking process from 12 to just one. This equates to a reduction from 36 minutes in platemaking and plate cutting to just 2.5 minutes of operator time to complete all processing steps. Gift Of Education In further news, Indiana State University received a multi-million-dollar in-kind gift of package engineer- ing technology software from Esko, a global developer of integrated software and hardware solutions for the packaging industry. This partnership continues the company’s two decades of support for the program. For the next three years, Esko will provide 50 soft- ware licenses to industry-leading programs. The part- nership will keep ISU students educated on the latest technology and promote a skilled workforce for Esko customers. ISU’s program has a 100 percent place- ment rate into jobs after graduation. The partnership with ISU doubles the number of stu- dents who have access to the same software used to develop nine out of 10 retail packages. Expansion of the partnership includes a cloud-based version of Esko software, which allows students to work on classroom projects in a remote setting. In addition, the College of Technology Packaging Engineering Lab is equipped with the software, allowing students to seamlessly transition projects to the production stage.
