HOW AN LLC CAN HELP YOUR BUSINESS If you’re thinking about starting a business, deciding how to legally structure your company can be daunting. Many entrepreneurs overlook important legal considerations while they focus on other aspects of getting their business off the ground. To avoid this grave error, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the most common legal structure for small businesses. Less Regulation and Paperwork Due to the simplicity of an LLC, less paperwork needs to be filed. Many corporations require annual reports, meetings, and thorough record keeping to keep the business on track. An LLC doesn’t require reports, extensive records, or annual meetings, making it uncomplicated to run.

A limited liability company (LLC) has many benefits other business structures don’t. For instance, an LLC does not require the person starting the business to be a U.S. citizen or even a permanent resident. LLCs can also protect your personal assets, provide pass-through taxation, and don’t require as much regulation and paperwork as others. Personal Asset Protection An LLC is separate from the owners who are starting the business. This means the LLC is “responsible for its own debts and lawsuits.” It also means that your own personal assets cannot be subject to any business-related litigation. Pass-Through Taxation Typically, business owners experience being taxed twice: first as the business itself and then as owners. The money a business collects is taxed before it is dispersed to the shareholders, and after it has been distributed, the money is taxed again. An LLC allows the profits from the corporation to go directly to the owners before those profits are taxed.

Wondering if an LLC is right for you? It depends on where you want to go with your business. While an LLC is flexible, it all comes down to your goals. Take some time to think about whether an LLC will help your business before deciding whether it’s the best option for you.
