education by incorporating humanities lessons that focus on communication, reasoning and creativity. The unique approach, called Humanistic STEM, or H-STEM, uses a blended curriculum to produce a more well-rounded — and marketable — graduate. The H-STEM model, developed by Dr. Debra Bourdeau, Associate Dean for Student Success and Academics, and Dr. Beverly Wood, associate professor in the Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology, has proven so successful that the program earned a three-year, $291,000 NSF grant to adapt the model for other institutions. Students are able to take H-STEM courses and select an H-STEM minor. A yearly H-STEM Symposium is held on Embry-Riddle Daytona Beach, FL, campus. The H-STEM initiative is another example of how the College of Arts & Sciences is working to help students secure high-paying jobs by ensuring they have problem-solving skills that go beyond the STEM arena.
