O mniscient Father, who generously gives wisdom, make us wise to serve as proper guides, both in our action and words, for our children, as they begin to make decisions and walk by your wisdom themselves, led by your Spirit, in the grace of Jesus Christ, their Savior and ours. Amen. Hear the Word

1. During the teen years, as you prepare your children for their emancipation from the home, why is it necessary to allow them to make some of their own decisions? Why is it doubly so to let them reap the rewards and consequences of their decisions? What are the profound benefits of conducting this training while they are still in “the learning community” of your home? Discuss the sorts of decisions you should allow them to make. 2. Tripp describes three parent-to-teen relationship types. “The preventative is the healthiest—the child is humble and therefore listens to your guidance, and the conversation is able to prevent difficulty.” Read aloud Proverbs 9:8-9 and 17:26 . How do these verses inform your discipline of this type of child? 3. In a corrective relationship, the child is “a little more independent than they should be, but you can still talk to them, and when faced with issues they respond to correction.” Should stiff penalties be avoided in this type of relationship?
