3rd Rotary Quarter 16-17

ROTARY DISTRICT 5810 EPRESENTING 65 ROTA Y CLUBS IN NORTH TEXAS 3 RD ROTARY QUARTER 16-17

Governor’s Message When I was a boy, we had a gas stovetop and I loved setting the flame down low, to warm up flour tortillas one at a time. When they were hot and toasty, I would flip them off the stovetop onto the counter, where I would quickly apply butter. As the pat of butter passed over the tortilla, it would disappear as it melted into liquid deliciousness; and I had a perfect snack. Occasionally, the flame was not set quite low enough, and resulted in slightly burned tortillas or tortillas on fire. My mother would caution me to respect the fire and that if I was not careful that it may jump out of control. This lesson, like so many others, made more sense to me after I actually experienced the subject first hand. On one particularly busy day of making hot tortilla snacks, one caught fire. Normally this was only a mild nuisance, remedied by turning down the stovetop and blowing out the flame on the tortilla. However, because this tortilla had been inadvertently dragged through the copious puddles of melted butter that dotted the countertop, the breath of air that would normally extinguish the flame, actually caused the fire to flare up…and then jump from dot to dot on the countertop. “Now I see,” ran through my mind as I remembered my mother’s words. Now I see the jumping flames of Rotary fellowship and good works moving through our district as we close the 3 rd quarter of this Rotary Year. I love the way our young folks are inspiring each other after their experiences with RYLA, Nicaragua & Cuba Service trips, Interact Spring Fling, and the Human Rights/Peace Symposium. It is so uplifting to see our Rotary Clubs working together on projects, fundraisers, and fellowship events. But I am most excited when our District Rotarians ignite the flames of service and fellowship by inviting others to join our tremendous organization.

In 1988, when the Global Polio Eradication Initiative began, polio paralyzed more than 1000 children worldwide every day.

The Gates Foundation is currently matching all Rotarian raised polio donations $2 for each $1 contribution (up to $35 million yearly). Our Rotary-wide 2016-17 Rotary year polio fundraising goal is $45 million + the Gates Foundation match.

Our goal is Global Polio Eradication! Polio Plus: Zero is the magic number!

Your Generosity is to be Applauded The Arch Klumph Society, named after the sixth president of Rotary recognizes The Rotary Foundation's highest tier of donors — those who have contributed $250,000 or more during their lifetime. Major Donors to The Rotary Foundation are those individuals, married couples, non- Rotary affiliated Foundations and Corporations who contribute an outright or cumulative gift of at least $10,000 to the Annual Programs Fund and/or to the Permanent Fund of The Rotary Foundation. There are 96 major donors and/or members of the Arch Klumph Society in District 5810; 11 new added this year-to-date.

The power of Rotary is opening doors for community service that ordinarily would be missed opportunities.

A fine example of this is when Susan Cowley, a Dallas North Rotary member saw a need at Faith Family Charter School. Susan is unique from other members of society. Because her son has severe autism, Susan is proactive in training and programs to learn about the brain, exercises and therapies to help the program to become smarter and healthier. She volunteers at least 3 days a week at FFA early childhood development. She does very specific exercises with the young students. One girl, in particular, was quite disruptive, had ADHD while also having a hard time focusing. After several weeks of Susan’s volunteer hours, this student’s focus has improved; her grades have improved along with her behavior. This is an example of how when we partner with our community, organically, things start to happen. This event was not on the “punch list” of Dallas North Rotary’s To Do list, instead, through the power of networking, partnering, volunteering, and asking to fill a need where vision is, shows how One person Can be the Change in a Sea of over a million Rotarians. ~ Article contributed by Cheryl Drane Skipworth, Rotary Club of Dallas North Do you have a story you would like to share? EarlyAct FirstKnight Rotarians have always made it a priority to cater to our youth with programs that include leadership camps, scholarships, top student recognition events, and immunization programs. We also recognize that we see a steady decline in discipline, respect, and responsibility among our students toward their teachers, students and elders. Rotary Clubs have an opportunity to work with their schools and teachers and implement an award winning "Character" building program called Early Act/First Knight (EAFK) which is built around gallant knights and chivalry. It starts at the elementary school level. Rotary Clubs sponsor the program, work with the schools and the EAFK organization and have had great success. EarlyAct FirstKnight® (or EAFK) is a powerful, daily character education program for elementary and middle schools, made available by The Knights of The Guild and many Rotary Clubs. Created by Dr. Randall Parr, EAFK creatively teaches and motivates students to become more civil, service-oriented people during their most formative years.

Find out why EAFK is the best character education resource available and how your club can have a project which benefits students, teachers, their schools, community and ultimately society. For details contact District Chair of EAFK Bud McBrayer, PDG of District 5810 at budmcbrayr@aol.com or Karl Clauss at khclauss@gmail.com. 
