SBE Internship Expo Program Fall 2021

Since Spring 2019, the Anderson Classroom to Career (C2C) Center has made possible for the School of Business and Economics to have its internship presentations in an expo format, where students who did their internships talk to other students and faculty about their experiences, in a very engaging and interactive atmosphere. Students who visit the expo also have the chance to network with employers in the area and hopefully establish connections for future internship opportunities. Due to the pandemic, our expo format has changed a little, and this fall we will offer it completely virtual, but with the same benefits–students will still have the chance to connect with interns and employers, learn about specific internships and also receive Pro Event credit. The event will happen via Zoom on Tuesday, May 11, from 3:30–4:45 p.m. Here is a preview about our spring 2021 students and their internships. I hope you enjoy the Virtual School of Business and Economics Internship Expo this spring! Prof. Ricardo Boeing, Ph.D. SBE Internship Director

HOMETOWN Crandon, Wis.

ORGANIZATION Boys & Girls Club of Portage County Stevens Point, Wis. TITLE PR & Marketing Intern

What I did: While at my internship, I was able to work on a variety of different things. Some of the things included were social media posts, monthly newsletters, campaigns, emails, etc. I was able to help with events and fundraisers and even got to take part in the Giving Tuesday campaign. I created emails, social media posts and videos for the campaign and am so happy to be able to have helped raise almost $4,000 to put toward the Teen Center. What I liked: I really enjoyed my internship through the Boys & Girls Club. Mikayla Kleifgen (SBE alumna) was a great mentor and so nice to work with. I was able to learn so many things while there and got an insight of the impact marketing can have. I was able to give my input on many things and felt like a part of the team. Future Dream Job: My dream would be to work for a non-profit to help impact and grow the community I am in. I loved my time at the BGC and hope to continue a job there in the future.

What I did: My main roles were to open accounts as well as complete the necessary paperwork to transfer assets and fund the accounts. I was also in tasked with preparing documents to be presented by the advisors to clients. What I liked: The thing I liked most about the internship was when the experienced advisors would ask my opinion about how they should advise clients. The advisors would give me time to come up with a plan which I would then present to the advisors. After that, the advisors would critique my suggestions before ultimately telling me what the advised the client to do. This was a learning experience that would be impossible to replicate in a classroom setting. Each case was unique and required time to formulate a plan. This internship did have days where it was a lot of paperwork. However, by doing the paperwork I was able to develop a deeper understanding of all the work that goes on behind the scenes of a financial service firm. Future Dream Job: I am still unsure about what my dream job is. I am moving to China in a few months and plan on staying there for multiple years. In that time, I might discover new interests and talents that will completely change what I want to do for my career. However, as of now I would want to be a financial planner. I think that it is a rewarding job and has a real impact on the lives of clients.

What I did: I worked on various projects supporting the UWSP MBA program, such as social media campaigns, information organization, data collection, and other daily projects assigned to me. I also represented the UWSP MBA program at local events. What I liked: I loved working in such a close-knit team of coworkers. They were always willing to answer my questions or assist me when I needed help. I also loved getting to attend local events and meeting people and business leaders in the community. Future Dream Job: At this point in my career my dream job would be a senior leadership role in an organization.

What I liked: What I liked most was the overall culture of the work environment. The interns were in constant (friendly) competition with each other which kept motivation levels high as well as maintained a positive atmosphere. Another thing I enjoyed was that although the work we’re doing each day is somewhat repetitive, it never felt that way. Because we meet new clients each day, who have differing personalities and reasons behind their rental needs, each day feels like a new adventure. Future Dream Job: Although I do love the car-rental environment, it is not my dream job. One thing I hope to do in the future is own property such as rental homes, a hotel, or an event venue. MAJORS Business Administration Marketing HOMETOWN Stevens Point, Wis. ORGANIZATION Skyward Inc. Stevens Point, Wis. TITLE Customer Consulting and Support Rep - Intern

What I did: I helped to influence the growth of not only our footprint, but also our internal portfolio. What I liked: I enjoyed the people and the connection made along the way.

What I did: After a good deal of training, I began the work of taking service calls, fixing customers databases, setting up new databases and training new interns. Service calls are typically complex in nature, customers usually have a good understanding of how the software works and so if a customer is stuck it’s because there’s a real issue. Taking their calls and helping them through these issues can be a challenge but having a solid foundation of product knowledge has helped in doing so. Training new interns quickly became one of my favorite things to do as well, as we all have a lot in common and were able to have fun together. What I liked: Another one of my favorite parts of the internship was growing my communication and problem-solving skills. When talking to customers over the phone, they are not always the kindest or receptive to your help. So figuring out the best way to communicate with individuals of all different personality types from all different backgrounds, all over the country, was at times a challenge but well worth while. Then as I grew in these interpersonal communication skills I was also able to practice problem solving, fixing the issues that they have run into in the software. Future Dream Job: My dream job has changed quite a bit over time, and continues to change as I gain more experience in life. But at this moment I believe my dream job would be to head up the marketing department of a non-profit. In this position I would love to use my knowledge of marketing practices and skills in media development to convey the message of the organization and the work they are doing.

Future Dream Job: My dream job is a financial planner/day trader.
