was able to merge technique and finesse and bring her artistic vision to a new level. “Her horse sculpture with the funny mane on top was pure beauty”, said Fair visitor Henriette Dufort. “I know it wasn’t comple- ted at the time, but it remindedme so much of my grandpa’s carving on the old country house porch. True carving that isn’t ove- rwhelmed by details and grandeur.” When the chainsaw lady isn’t chopping around at the fairground or festival, she’s back at her workshop in Saint-Eugène, where she will be welcoming guests in Sep- tember for the ARTour studio tour. It will be a good opportunity to meet the artist and admire a wide range of carvings, from delicate gnomes to majestic eagles, horn of plenty and bears. Proud of her Dutch roots, Gerdine Van Woudenberg also operates a Dutch country store with her workshop on Mill Street.
SAINT-EUGÈNE | Wood carving is one of the oldest art forms around and artists always try to bring a new dimension or find a new twist to it. Last week, Saint- Eugène resident Gerdine Van Wouden- berg showcased her ability to carve beauty with a chainsaw in a fascinating way, at the Lachute Fair. “I domany types of carving and the chain- saw work is just the beginning of the pro- cess,” said the artist. But you know, I wanted to go fast and go big so the chainsaw was, surprisingly, the right tool for the job.” For Van Woudenberg, chainsaw carving is an opportunity to attack projects that are too big for the workshop or some that need an edge. At the Lachute Fair, she gathered quite a crowd with her ability to carve with precision. “That’s just plain awesome,” said visi- tor Laurent St-Yves. “I can’t even cut a log straight and she’s carving a wolf out of a log in record time. That shows you how an ar- tist can transform anything into something unique, whatever the tool.” For years, Van Woudenberg honed her craft in the workshop, doing unique car- vings but also historical reproduction of furniture, chandeliers and even building canoes.
