put in doubt the profitability of the Poker Run, calling it a “big boat event” that costs $85,000 but without much waves. It’s not a surprise that Mayor Berthiaume didn’t take the councillors’ comments too kindly, thus penning the “for the first and last time” letter, published in this week’s edition of Le Carillon. “I’m just tired of all of this,” said Ber- thiaume. “Some still go on and on about the fact that I live in Champlain Township, but I grew up in Hawkesbury and I have properties here. I pay taxes here and I’m still one of the boys. (...) We need to have a broader vision and a collective one to go forward as a city and a region. (...) They say I did nothing right during the last four years and it looks like they want to destroy me. (...) Come August, I will start my muni- cipal campaign and I will do it on ideas and values which Hawkesbury needs to go forward, the right way”. HAWKESBURY | The Hawkesbury mu- nicipal council is currently taking a much needed vacation break until August, which follows a little war of words in the local medias between councillors André Chamaillard, Michel Thibodeau, Johanne Portelance and mayor René Berthiaume. While clashes of ideas and visions are an integral part of the political game, this in- tense and emotional tension raises ques- tions as elections loom. The three councillors made their outcry public after Mayor Berthiaume’s June 23 address, citing that his “remarks were more of an electoral nature and that the council table isn’t the place to gain political leve- rage”. They accused the mayor of taking credit where credit isn’t due, citing the HGH extension project as an example. They also

For members of the Glengarry-Prescott- Russell Liberal Riding Association it means time to start hunting up a candidate to chal- lenge incumbent Conservative MP Pierre Lemieux at the polls. GPR association pre- sident Marie-Noelle Lanthier announced that the group is now open to nominations

to create a short list of possible nominees for a riding association candidate forum later in the year. “We are actively looking for enthusiastic and competent community leaders,” Lan- thier stated. “The party, under Justin Tru- deau’s leadership, has developed a new open nominations process for the search.” Lanthier noted that the “Green Light”pro- cess for the party is designed to determine if would-be candidates are committed to the values of the Liberal party.

The association’s nomination committee’s candidate search parameters also empha- size that potential nominees must be able to represent the linguistic and ethnic de- mographic profile of the riding with at least bilingual ability. The nomination guidelines are also designed to encourage possible female candidates. The grant is based on total full- and part- time student enrolment in the Upper Canada school district. Other school districts also receive their provincial student needs grants decades old now and its original design then was for a maximum load capacity of five imperial tons. The years have taken their toll on the structure. Township director Marc Dai- gneault observed a noticeable sag in the underside of the bridge when he took part in a recent inspection. While the bridge was designed for five tons load-bearing capacity, it is no longer able to handle some of the modern heavy equipment that exists now. The township has had to hire a contractor equipped with a small tractor to look after snow removal during winter along the Concession Four road section on either side of the bridge because the township’s own snowplow is too big and heavy for the bridge to handle. There are also safety concerns for general traffic, including school buses, given the aging condition of the bridge. The original estimate for a re-fit of Des Atocas Bridge was $1.9 million, based on an initial engineering consultant study. Further review brought the estimate down to $1.5 million when the township approa- ched the province for funding aid. “This is another example of the partnerships between the province and the municipalities,” said MPP Grant Crack, ad-

ALFRED | Residents along Concession Four Road near the Des Atocas Bridge have to remember that it’s not a through road for awhile. But they’ll be happy with the results when a refit of the bridge over the creek is finished. The $1.5 million project has joint funding from the provincial government and Alfred- Plantagenet Township. The provincial share of 82 per cent comes from the Municipal Infrastructure Initiatives Investment fund (MIII) while the township’s share is part of the capital works budget. “Council is pleased to have this kind of support from the province,” said Mayor Jean-Yves Lalonde during the July 11 offi- cial launch of the bridge re-fit project. “This was a project that was urgently needed, as it was a security and safety concern.” The mayor and council approached pro- vincial government officials during the On- tario Good Roads Association conference (OGRA) earlier this year about possible fun- ding for the Des Atocas Bridge re-fit. The mayor pointed out that the bridge is seven BROCKVILLE | While students crammed on final exams or got graduation gowns in or- der, Upper Canada district school trustees had one key piece of financial business to finish up before they could look forward to their summer vacation break. UpperCanadaDistrictSchoolBoardtrustees (UCDSB) approved a $353 million operating budget for the 2014-2015 fiscal year during their June 18 regular session. The board also approved $45.8 million earmarked for capital works projects over the summer season and regular school term. “The biggest thing this budget does is ensure quality and consistency in our pro- gramming and operations,” stated UCDSB Chairman Greg Pietersma in a news release. “It provides assurance for parents that scho- ols will be open, math and science classes will

ALEXANDRIA | Children will be looking forward to getting a special ticket from the Ontario Provincial Police again this summer. The“Wear it toWin”safety program is back for another season. The Stormont-Dundas- Glengarry OPP detachment has once again teamed up with Alexandria Dairy Queen, Alexandria Home Hardware Building Centre and Raage Skateshop to promote the im- portance of wearing a safety helmet this summer by providing a reward incentive to Glengarry youths who wear helmets when cycling and skateboarding. In an ongoing effort to foster positive relationships with youth, safe cyclists and skateboarders will be approached by SD&G ė!.ŏ%0ŏ0+ŏ3%*Ę based on their total student numbers. Any increases in the annual grant not accounted for through inflation are the result of increases in student numbers at district schools. The major portion of the UCDSB 2014-2015 operations budget goes toward staff salaries for teachers, principals, para-professionals and others. The allocation is $241 million for wages. Another $25 million in the operations budget goes towards transportation costs, with $34 million for operation and mainte- nance of school facilities, and $8.5 million for administration and governance costs. The next term’s capital works budget in- cludes plans for building and equipping two new elementary schools in Cornwall and Kemptville. Those schools will open in 2016. The budget also has allocations for school renewal work and improvements to meet the needs of the new expanded Full-Day Kinder- garten program. The 2014-2015 budget also includes $46

OPP officers on patrol and issued a “ticket” for making a safe choice. The ticket issued will act as a reward and redeemable for a Dairy Queen ice cream cone (Alexandria location only) also serving as a ballot for a chance to win a new bicycle and a fully equipped skateboard, which will be drawn in early September. Emily McBain, Manager at Alexandria Dairy Queen, Ron Aubin, owner of Alexan- dria Home Hardware Building Centre and Alain Lauzon, owner of Raage Skateshop, expressed the importance of educating and rewarding youth for their role in safety and are proud to be supporters of this initiative. The campaign runs throughout the sum- mer months, ending August 31. million in Special Education funding. That breaks down to $19.4 million for special edu- cation teachers and $17.7million for program assistants, along with $1.2 million for a new technology fund to help with student lear- ning. Other operation budget allocations in- clude: $2.9 million for human resources, $4.4 million for the director’s office, $5.4 million for information technology services, and $3.7 million for programming. There is also $90.3 million for facilities, divided between design and construction, and facilities operation and maintenance. “This budget reflects our philosophy that proper support for student learning is at the heart of everything we do,” stated Pietersma. “We are funding new school projects, enhan- cing the instructional skills of our teachers, and funding special education programming. All the kinds of efforts that allow students to learn and thrive.”

Lucienne Royer a 100 ans!

HARRINGTON | The annual Canadian Am- ateur Musicians-Musiciens Amateurs du Canada (CAMMAC) concert and brunch series will be serving up a diverse pro- gram this summer. The weekly concerts at the centre on Lake MacDonald kicks off July 6 with the Alcan Quartet : Laura Andriani, violin, Nathalie Camus, violin, Luc Beauchemin, viola, and David Ellis, cello. This dynamic string quar- tet with an international reputation is a CAMMAC favourite. July 20, a Baroque matinée will highlight Pallade Musica, four of Montr é al›s most promising Early Music performers, Tanya LaPerrière, Baroque violin, Elinor Frey, Ba- roque cello, Esteban La Rotta, theorbo, and Mylène Bélanger, harpsichord. Grand Prize winners at the EMA Baroque Performance Competition in 2012, their performances are based on dedicated research and con- tinuous exploration, acclaimed for their “tremendous ensemble sense,” according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. In 2013, Pallade Musica recorded its first CD, Verso Venezia, on the ATMA label. July 27, the focus is on Quatuor Bozzini, Clemens Merkel, violin, Mira Benjamin, vio- lin, Stephanie Bozzini, viola, Isabelle Bozzini, cello. Since 1999, the Bozzini Quartet has been an original voice in new, contem- porary, experimental and classical music. “Their skew is radically contemporary, pro- pelling the hyper-creative Montréal scene, and beyond. The group is known for its me- ticulous and sensuous attention to detail,” says CAMMAC. August 3 , jazz legend Oliver Jones and Eric Lagacé, on double bass, will perform standards by Gershwin and Cole Porter as well as original music by Oscar Peterson and Oliver Jones. A versatile player, Eric Lagacé, is equally known for his compositions and arrangements. August 10, Jean-François Normand, clarinet, Marina Thibault, viola, and Olivier Hébert-Bouchard, piano, will perform a mix of Bruch and Mozart. August 17, CAMMAC welcomes for the first time pianist Antoine Rivard-Landry. The talented young virtuoso won the 2013 Orchestre symphonique de Trois- Rivières Competition. New this year, the CAMMAC Festival Pass- port gives access to each of seven concerts and brunch for the price of five. For information, 1-888-622-8755, 819- 687-3938 or visit national@cammac.ca.

The chainsaw lady makes quite an impression STÉPHANE LAJOIE stephane.lajoie@eap.on.ca

was able to merge technique and finesse and bring her artistic vision to a new level. “Her horse sculpture with the funny mane on top was pure beauty”, said Fair visitor Henriette Dufort. “I know it wasn’t comple- ted at the time, but it remindedme so much of my grandpa’s carving on the old country house porch. True carving that isn’t ove- rwhelmed by details and grandeur.” When the chainsaw lady isn’t chopping around at the fairground or festival, she’s back at her workshop in Saint-Eugène, where she will be welcoming guests in Sep- tember for the ARTour studio tour. It will be a good opportunity to meet the artist and admire a wide range of carvings, from delicate gnomes to majestic eagles, horn of plenty and bears. Proud of her Dutch roots, Gerdine Van Woudenberg also operates a Dutch country store with her workshop on Mill Street.

SAINT-EUGÈNE | Wood carving is one of the oldest art forms around and artists always try to bring a new dimension or find a new twist to it. Last week, Saint- Eugène resident Gerdine Van Wouden- berg showcased her ability to carve beauty with a chainsaw in a fascinating way, at the Lachute Fair. “I domany types of carving and the chain- saw work is just the beginning of the pro- cess,” said the artist. But you know, I wanted to go fast and go big so the chainsaw was, surprisingly, the right tool for the job.” For Van Woudenberg, chainsaw carving is an opportunity to attack projects that are too big for the workshop or some that need an edge. At the Lachute Fair, she gathered quite a crowd with her ability to carve with precision. “That’s just plain awesome,” said visi- tor Laurent St-Yves. “I can’t even cut a log straight and she’s carving a wolf out of a log in record time. That shows you how an ar- tist can transform anything into something unique, whatever the tool.” For years, Van Woudenberg honed her craft in the workshop, doing unique car- vings but also historical reproduction of furniture, chandeliers and even building canoes. With a solid base as a carpenter, she
