MARTIN BRUNETTE martin.brunette@eap.on.ca

RiverFest rocks and rolls all weekend long

from Hawkesbury to Rockland saw 71 driv- ers roar along the river roads and helped raise close to $15,000 for charity. Rockland Ford officials reported pledge donations are still rolling in but as of press time they can confirm more than $10,000 will go towards breast cancer research and sup- port, the original purpose for the car rally, while another $4000 will go to the City of Clarence-Rockland’s Build the Heart of the Community assistance fund. The Poker Run Extravaganza and Rendez- vous Performance run for powerboats and recreational boaters roared up and down the river from Hawkesbury to Rockland and back with a turnaround at Petrie Island in Orléans. This year 26 boats took part in the powerboat event while another 10 entrants rode the waves for the Rendezvous. The Centraide-United Way Prescott-Rus- sell Toy Run for motorcyclists proved a big winner with 20 confirmed signups. Then 54 machines with teddybears on the handle- bars or pillions accompanied by 73 riders showed up Sunday morning in Hawkesbury for the start. The teddybears will all stay at temporary quarters at the L’Orignal and Hawkesbury food banks and Maison Interlude until their new owners come to claim them. The $4330 that riders raised in pledges will go towards UnitedWay projects for children. The Annual Mayors Challenge Waterski Relay saw René Berthiaume of Hawkesbury claim the trophy. The challenge also raised about $500 for Prostate Cancer Canada.

L’ORIGNAL | It was bigger, it was better, it was warmer and wetter, and it has put the Prescott-Russell region on the tourism destination radar for many in the future. The 2013 Annual Ottawa River Festival wrapped Sunday afternoon at Parc du Mou- lin in Rockland and Parc de la Confédéra- tion in Hawkesbury and various places in between at riverside communities. Orga- nizers are very happy with the overall re- sults which confirm their expectations that the festival will become a cornerstone of Prescott-Russell’s future tourism economy. “We really got people to take notice of our river,” said Carole Lavigne, a festival spokes- woman at the United Counties of Prescott- Russell economic development and tour- ism office. “It was great.” This year Hawkesbury was the lead host community for the festival. Next year it will be Rockland’s turn again to welcome par- ticipants and visitors to all the events. Both towns and also the riverside communities in between like Lefaivre and Wendover all hosted various activities and special events as part of the regional festival. The three main regular events featured as part of the festival, and which link all the participating communities, reported great success over the July 6 weekend. Adozen students received special recogni- tion for their efforts and achievements as part of the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario family of schools. Mackenzie Bowen from St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School in Hammond, Nicho- las Gent and Jeremy Mallette, both of St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School in Cornwall, Payton Anderson and Madeline Roddick of St. Mark in Brockville, Jeremy Marsolais of St. Jude of Vankleek Hill, and Morgan Foster from Mother Teresa Catho- lic High School in Russell were honoured by the CDSBEO for their participation in Le concours et festival d’art oratoire (CFAO), an annual public-speaking event for students in grades 4 to 12 who study French-as-a- second-language in Ontario schools. Each of these students took first place in his or her category at this year’s regional CFAO that the CDSBEO hosted in April. The following month they all attended the pro- vincial competition in Toronto. Young ambassadors Olivia Ivanic of Notre Dame Catholic High School in Carleton Place and Zachary Bertinato of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School in Russell were recognized for their efforts in the Ful- bright Canada Youth Ambassador Program (FCYAP). The FCYAP selects 17 students from across Canada to take part in a three- week international ambassadors program. The 17 were chosen out of more than 200 Canadian applicants. Justin Marion of St. Thomas Aquinas Cath- olic Secondary School earned recognition for his championship equestrian skills. Orléans resident named to Order of Canada

The Orléans resident is on the list of future inductees into the Order of Canada. The office of Governor General David Johnston released the list of 74 new ap- pointments to the Order at the end of June. Thirsk will become one of 34 new Officers of the Order of Canada during an upcoming ceremony at Rideau Hall.

The ceremony will also feature induction of 40 new members of the order. Thirsk’s nomination as an officer of the Order of Canada is in recognition of his con- tribution to both the fields of space explo- ration and the promotion of science educa- tion. The Order of Canada is the country’s high-

est civilian honour and was established dur- ing the 1967 Centennial celebrations. Recipients are honoured for their out- standing achievements, community dedi- cation, and service to the nation. Pay raise approved for hostel care operators

in Prescott-Russell while the UCPR covers the remaining $800,000 needed through its own budget. Since January 2012 the UCPR has set a limit of 510 subsidized residents that it can help support through the CHPI agreements it has with 34 domiciliary hostels and retire- ment homes in Prescott-Russell. The old per diem rate for those facilities has been set at $47.75 since 2009. A social services department report to the counties council states that raising the per diem to $50 will not affect the other pro- grams the UCPR provides through its CHPI program.

erators of domiciliary hostels. The old rate of $47.75 per day per tenant will become $50 per day effective July 1. “We finally have some good news to com- municate to our members,” stated Nicole Normand, president of the Residence Asso- ciation of Prescott-Russell (RAPR) in a press release following the counties council June 26 vote on the per diem increase. “This in- crease was well overdue, even if it is much less than we would have liked. However, considering the difficult financial times faced by our provincial government, we certainly welcome this news and hope that further increases will be forthcoming in fu-

ture budgets to make up for the losses we have had to endure over the last four years.” Domiciliary hostels offer permanent housing and some personal support servic- es and care programs for low-income indi- viduals like seniors or those with physical or mental disabilities able to live on their own but who have just their pensions or other stipends to support themselves. The UCPR manages a domiciliary hos- tels program as part of its social services mandate for a Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative (CHPI). The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing provides a $2.7 million subsidy for the CHPI program

The South Nation Conservation Author- ity (SNC) will receive a $50,000 grant from the petroleum giant thanks to lots of online supporters clicking in at the company’s Fu- elling Change website. “SNC is delighted to have our Totally Turtles project benefit from the support of our residents and the Fuelling Change pro- gram,” stated Karen Paquette, SNC fisheries technician, in a press release. The Fuelling Change program is an online project of Shell Canada. The website lists various environmental projects, ranging from habitat conservation works to public awareness programs, which are in need of funding aid. People who join the website can then log in and click on those projects that they sup- port the most and feel is most deserving of funding. The more “likes” a project receives, the better its chances of qualifying for one of the levels of funding aid at the end of the public review and voting period. Shell Canada provides $1 million for divi- sion among those projects that receive the most online support. Depending on the number of votes received, a project may qualify for $25,000, $50,000 or $100,000 in Fuelling Change grants. This year 31 projects qualified for the Fuelling Change grant program. SNC’s on- going study project involving native turtle species in the 4000-square-kilometre South Nation watershed region qualified for a $50,000 grant. The money will go towards various ini- tiatives to protect native turtle habitats and reduce turtle mortality through either loss of habitat and nest damage or road- kill deaths when turtles are trying to cross backcountry roads and highways to get to their nesting sites.
