unseen things of God. This spiritual sustenance does not involve the abroga tion of material things. Our Lord did not say man shall not live by bread, He said that man should not live by bread, alone. Seek ye first the kingdom of God . . . and all these things shall be added unto you. QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION Why is the essential outlook of Com munism wrong? Does God intend us to live a monastic or ascetic existence? What place do material things have in the life of the Christian? How can we tell when we are spiritu ally undernourished? The passage quoted above is intended to put into clear relief the difference between body and soul as far as values are concerned. The word soul is used in many different senses, but here it seems obvious that it refers to that part of us which persists even when the body is shed. It is the part of our being which is subject to regeneration and subse quent development and which, in the life to come, will be the core around which God will place the spiritual body (1 Cor. 15). The Body Is the Shell The great difficulty in understanding the Christian attitude to personal worth is that we tend to place our conception of values on that which we can see. We measure a man’s worth by his salary, his home, his possessions, his clothes, his automobile and seldom by those un seen realities which are within. To us the visible is the real and the invisible is so intangible that it is unreal. Chris tianity puts this in reverse for its faith is the evidence of things not seen in the mortal body and its material en vironment is the shadow of a deeper reality. It is the shell that hides the new creature now in chrysalis form but which later at death, or our Lord’s re turn, will pass through its metamor phosis and ascend on eternal wings to the world of God. According to this idea what happens to the body is only of secondary importance. The Invaluable Soul This Christian conception opens up a new vista of ideas in regard to the danger of this life. The powers of evil may kill the body, may minimize its earthly pleasures, and take away from the earthly pilgrim almost all of those things from a material point of view which would make life worth living, but nevertheless can do no permanent dam age unless they succeed in destroying or adversely affecting the soul. A SIGNIFICANT NEW CHRISTIAN BOOK entitled THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN has just been published. The book deals with God’s great eternal purpose behind all things. It answers the “why” of creation. “A clear, simple, yet profound line of Bible study has been worked out in this little book . . . It is fresh, interesting, and Scriptural.” The Sunday School Times. “ In six chapters the author-takes us dispensationally from the cause of the chaotic conditions on earth before the creation of man to the new earth of the eternal day.” Our Hope. “The book goes beyond a mere academic distinguishing of the two king doms to present a highly interesting survey of God’s wonderful dealings from the origin of Satan down to the new heaven and new earth.” Moody Monthly. The cloth bound books, with an artistically designed jacket, will make excellent Christmas gifts which will be appreciated for years.
