Idealliance Introduces Global ECG Characterization Target Idealliance, the creator of print standards and spec- ifications such as GRACoL, SWOP, and G7, is releasing an Expanded Color Gamut (ECG) characterization tar- get for use in characterizing and calibrating multicolor print processes. The Expanded Color Gamut (ECG) Characterization Target was created by a subcommittee within the Ide- alliance Print Properties and Colorimetric Council as a part of the Idealliance Global ECG project. The Idealli- ance Global ECG is designed to make 7-color process printing as predictable and normal as current CMYK printing specifications such as GRACoL and SWOP. The characterization target will complement a com- prehensive Expanded Color Gamut (ECG) Project Kit, which contains guidelines, proofing control strips, and other tools for print users. The characterization Target is a 7-color test chart, which contains a scalable number of patches, ranging from a single page, up to 4 pages. Most users should be able to achieve acceptable results using the one- or two-page chart. The chart was designed with input from across the industry and is optimized for multi- ple printing processes. The team that has created the test chart included developers from: ColorLogic, Esko, GMG, and Kodak as well as other industry members. Team leaders Hanno Hoffstadt,Thorsten Braun, and William Li worked together and with others to create prototypes and test candidates for a period of two years. Creation of the chart also included flexo and litho test runs to capture data and understand optimal configuration and patch design. Idealliance is now in the final phase of the Idealli- ance Global ECG project. The deliverables of this fi- nal phase will be standardized ECG datasets for litho and flexo.“Our goal for ECG is to do for 7-color what GRACoL did for CMYK,”Ron Ellis,Chair of Idealliance’s Print Properties and Colorimetric Council said.“These standardized ECG datasets will help designers, brands and creatives work with ECG in a global supply chain”.

Scanbag Installs Flexo Wash Laser Technology The Danish manufacturer of paper bags and carri- ers, Scanbag A/S, has installed a laser anilox cleaner from FlexoWash for its production plant in Skive. The FW 2000 model, which was introduced in 2018, is the first laser model in the company’s anilox clean- ing range that dates back 25 years and involves more than 3,000 installations. With anilox cleaning such a fundamental part of the flexo printing process, the new laser technology is reportedly ideal for 100 per- cent cleaning without damage to the expensive rolls, with the guarantee of consistent print quality and re- duced downtime.

With the ability to print single- and double-ply bags in up to eight flexo colors, Scanbag’s staff of 30 are kept busy supplying SOS bags and paper carriers with handles to the industrial and building markets, as well as the retail, pet-food, fruit and vegetable, confection- ary and take-away restaurant sectors. Printing is carried out on flexo presses using wa- ter-based inks, with a maximum web width of 1300mm and cut-offs from 360mm to 760mm. SOS bags and paper carriers are offered in many formats and can be supplied with or without handles (both inside and outside),with or without print and in 1-ply or 2-ply material. The new Flexo Wash laser cleaner sits well with the company’s ethos of quality, safety and focus on the envi- ronment. Easy to load, with the anilox rolls placed into a drawer and then slid into the machine, the FW2000 monitors all aspects of the anilox roll including cell depth, rotation, and laser performance. Its inventory management system provides full traceability of each roll — when it was last cleaned and for how long, so that performance levels can be closely monitored. Scanbag’s Søren Bligaard welcomes the Flexo Wash FW2000 laser anilox cleaner to the production facility in Skive, Denmark.
