NOVEMBER 2019

3 Ideas for Mixing Up the Traditional Turkey Day WELCOME THE UNCONVENTIONAL THANKSGIVING

MANAGERS Store Manager: David Rosario

Some people love Thanksgiving just the way it is, but others feel the annual traditions that come with it are stifling. If you’re dreading the inevitable conversation about whose house to go to, which side dishes to cook, and who to invite to the table, why not mix things up for 2019? Just because Thanksgiving falls on the same fourth Thursday each November doesn’t mean you’re locked into the same holiday routine. If you’re stuck in a Turkey Day rut, try one of these alternate celebrations and enjoy the spirit of gratitude in a new way. ‘JUST US’ THANKSGIVING TV shows love to draw up stories about devastated characters forced to spend Thanksgiving without their extended families, but really, what’s so bad about making Thanksgiving an intimate affair? Big, boisterous Thanksgivings with every uncle, cousin, and stepsister certainly have their downsides. Slaving over the stove is stressful, and bringing people from so many different walks of life together can cause heated arguments. Why not skip the drama this Thanksgiving and enjoy a romantic dinner with your significant other or a cozy meal with your spouse and kids? You can cook together at home or grab a table at a restaurant with a Turkey Day special to leave the stress of cooking behind entirely. In the end, you may be even more grateful for those you hold dear. FRIENDSGIVING This gathering of friends rather than family has been a Thanksgiving option for decades, but in the last few years, rising popularity has given it a name: Friendsgiving. Some people think that the moniker dates back to a 2007 episode of the TV show “Friends,” while others credit Twitter users or a 2011 Bailey's Irish Cream marketing campaign. Whatever its origins, The Atlantic says the informal, potluck-style meal gained real traction with 20- and 30-somethings in 2014 and has only gotten more popular since. Friendsgiving is a great option if you’re

living far from home, don’t get along well with your family, or simply want to avoid the pressure holidays bring. For the best of both worlds, try adding a Friendsgiving to your Thanksgiving routine, either on the weekend before or the weekend after Turkey Day. DESTINATION THANKSGIVING Here’s a new way to solve the “Whose house should we eat at?” debate: Skip the houses altogether and jet off to a hotel room instead. The destination Thanksgiving is a great way to take advantage of days off work, and they can bring families together on neutral territory. If you’re bringing the full crew, rent an Airbnb for everyone and have fun experimenting with Thanksgiving recipes that fit your new surroundings. If you go tropical, for example, MyRecipes.com offers an entire menu for “Thanksgiving at the Beach.” Alternately, turning Thanksgiving into a family trip with your spouse and kids is a great way to completely avoid political discussions and best-pumpkin-pie debates. If anyone calls to ask where you are, just explain that you planned your trip months ago — then take another sip of your piña colada and show your kids how to make a turkey-shaped sandcastle. No matter the type of Thanksgiving celebration you choose, Foodtown will be there to help! Our wide selection makes shopping for any recipe a breeze, and with our Club Card, online coupons, and other savings programs, even the swankiest meals won’t break the bank. If you’re really strapped for time, call a store near you and ask about our Thankgiving catering options. The easier we can make this holiday for you, the better!

MEET ARACLY ROSALES! Our Top-Notch Online Shopper

Since 1999, Foodtown has offered customers like you free Thanksgiving turkeys as tokens of our gratitude. We’re a local, family-run business, so having the support of our customers year- round means a lot, and we’re happy to give back for the holidays! Qualifying for the turkey program is easy, and there are no strings attached. A month before Thanksgiving each year, we announce the beginning of the program. Then, if you spend the required amount in our stores over the next few weeks, you’ll get a coupon for a free turkey just in time for the holiday! The turkeys are all natural, Foodtown-brand birds, and you can choose any size you like. Alternately, you’ll have the option of getting a kosher turkey at a discount or, if you’re not a turkey person, you can redeem your coupon for a store gift card or another choice entrée, like a free family-sized lasagna. According to the National Turkey Federation, Americans eat 46 million turkeys every Thanksgiving, so it’s no surprise that every year we give away thousands of free turkeys to our customers through this Thanksgiving program. We’re always thrilled to see them head out the door, and we like to imagine them becoming the centerpieces of happy family dinners all across New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. There’s nothing we want more than to take care of our customers, and making sure you’re all happy and fed during the holidays is a big part of that. Our goal is to ensure your Thanksgiving shopping is a one-stop trip. That’s why, in addition to those turkeys, you can find everything you need for an impressive Thanksgiving spread at a reasonable price, like potatoes, gravy, stuffing mixes, cranberry sauce, dinner rolls, green beans, and pumpkin pie. From all of us here at Foodtown, Happy Thanksgiving! We’re thankful for your business, and we hope you’ll take us up on our free turkey offer in return. Aracly has worked for Foodtown for almost three years, and we consider ourselves lucky to have her for every one of them.

Whether she’s pulling items off the shelf for her online orders, greeting customers, or helping out her fellow team members, Aracly always lights up the store.

As our in-house online shopper, Aracly spends most of her time compiling online orders for delivery or pickup. Though her orders come in via our website or over the phone, when she does get to interact directly with customers, that’s one of her favorite parts of the job. “I like calling the customers and telling them about the substitutions if there’s an item from their order I don’t have. Some of them are very nice, and they appreciate us. They’ll say, ‘Thank you very much for helping with my order!’ That’s what I like,” she says. Aracly loves her fellow employees just as much as she does her customers. She never hesitates to help them with something they need, whether that’s running an errand or assisting at the checkout. “It’s a wonderful atmosphere. We get along with each other and help each other and everything,” she says. “If there are questions we have, we ask each other. There are always smiles on our faces! We’re like family and friends; we get along really well.” Though she doesn’t spend much time in our seafood section, unless she’s packing up an order that calls for fish, it’s Aracly’s favorite part of the store. She loves to cook seafood at home, and it tops her list of things to eat. “Shrimp, lobster, everything that has to do with seafood, I love,” she says. Of all of Foodtown’s discount programs and deals, Aracly’s favorite is the 10%-off program. She says her customers enjoy using it, and nothing makes her prouder than having happy customers.

From all of us on the Foodtown team, thank you, Aracly, for all that you do!

CALLING ALL PET OWNERS This One’s for You!

We here at Foodtown and Freshtown love our pets, and we know that you feel the same! If you’re a pet owner, you probably consider your dogs, cats, and other animal companions family and splurge on special treats and toys from time to time. Some of us at Foodtown even spend more money on our pets than we do on ourselves, so we definitely understand the urge to spoil them. Because we know how expensive having a pet can be, we want to make those buying decisions as easy as possible, and that’s where our Pet Club program comes in. Every time you reach $100 in pet-related spending, your cashier will give you a $5-off coupon to use in our store. It’s a small way for us to say thank you for your business and keep your pets happy. If you have any doubt left that we’re pet people, this story from Foodtown co-president Noah Katz just might change your mind. In 2008, during a particularly cold winter, a beautiful gray cat had two kittens just behind the Foodtown main office in Mount Vernon, New York. The staff chipped in to put out food

and water every day for the new family, but one dark, chilly night, when Noah was locking up, he turned around to see the mother cat looking up at him, and he realized that the food was gone and the water left in the bowl was frozen.

“In that one instant, I knew that I would be taking care of her for the rest of her life,” Noah says.

He took the cat to the vet for a checkup, then went back for the two kittens. His family found the kittens new homes, but they kept the mother cat, who they named Mrs. Bigglesworth. “She is still with us, and my wife and two daughters love her as much as I do,” Noah says. “Needless to say, we buy all of her food and toys at Foodtown!” If you have any questions about our Pet Club program or any of the pet-related products we carry, don’t hesitate to give us a call.

When it comes to nutrition, salmon is king for its omega-3 fatty acids and high protein content, and nothing is tastier paired with shrimp! If you add the recipe below to your list this month, shop at Foodtown to get both seafood ingredients at a discount. SIMPLE BAKED SHRIMP AND SALMON

365 DAYS OF GRATITUDE

Ingredients

Directions

Can you imagine writing 365 thank-you letters? It sounds like a lot, but the process of writing them (all by hand, mind you) turned one man’s life around when he thought he had nothing left to be grateful for. John Kralik is the author of “A Simple Act of Gratitude,” the book that chronicles his journey from hopelessness to joy through saying "thank you." Kralik felt his life was at its lowest after a divorce and a failed year of business. During a hike on New Year's Day, he had a realization: “I needed to learn to be grateful for the things I had, rather than to focus on the things I wanted, or the many things I felt I had lost,” Kralik describes. He made the resolution to write 365 thank-you notes over the year, and the experience changed his perspective. “I became grateful as I noticed the good things in my life,” Kralik says. In the month of Thanksgiving, it’s a good reminder about the power of "thank you."

BUY LOCAL, HELP A NEIGHBOR How Foodtown Supports Mom and Pop Businesses

Supporting local farms and suppliers has never been more important. With megacorporations growing larger and larger, it’s all too easy to shop online and have merchandise delivered from across the country right to your doorstep. Not only does all of that fuel expenditure harm the environment, but ordering online also means bypassing the small businesses that keep your local economy thriving. That makes it harder for mom and pop companies to compete and hurts your neighbors’ job prospects. We know that’s the last thing you want, which is why Foodtown strives to offer local products that are just as tasty and convenient as the online alternatives! Small businesses account for almost half the jobs in the United States, and we carry their products because we know supporting them is just as important to you as it is to us.

In fact, we never say no to a local vendor if they want to be placed on our shelves. We give everyone a chance, then let our customers vote with their dollars on whether we keep them in stock. When the owner of Brooklyn-based Calvin’s Hot Sauce approached Foodtown co-president Noah Katz, for example, to ask for a shot in our stores, Noah told him, “Bring it in!” without worrying about paperwork or red tape. Fifteen years later, that hot sauce is still on our shelves. Our local products include honey, milk, coffee, maple syrup, and more. In Brooklyn, we carry Raaka chocolates made right there in Red Hook, and in Margaretville, we offer Machu Picchu bread baked daily by one of our customers. If you know a local vendor who wants to give selling at Foodtown a try, tell them to call Noah at 914-667-6400, ext. 1011 today!
