Garden fresh

Mary Lynn Boulay and other local growers, artisans, crafters, and home cooks are taking advantage of the good summer weather to promote their produce and wares during the first year of Rockland’s new farmers’ market setup every Sunday at the gazebo between the Jean-Marc Lalonde Arena and the Coco Lemay Ball Field at Parc Simon. Local food challenge Growing, buying, preparing, eating and enjoying produce, meats, and beverages from the Five Counties region is the theme for first SDG&PR 10-Day Local Food Challenge. Sponsored and organized through a partnership between various non-profit groups, the aim of the challenge is to boost local awareness of local foods which are part of the economy of communities within the Five Counties and of the regional economy overall. Registration for the challenge is free with more information available at www.sdgprlocalfoodchallenge.com. Organizers encourage participants to share their experiences and knowledge of local foods during the challenge through Twitter at #eatsSDGPR. The challenge website will also offer tips and advice for local gardening and other related matters dealing with foodstuffs from Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry, Prescott and Russell counties. For more information, contact Sarah Mulvihill, SDG&PR Local Food Challenge, at sdgprlocalfoodchallenge@gmail.com, phone 613-294- 4219 or go to the website. – Gregg Chamberlain Clark Road drainage fix Homeowners along Clark Road can look forward to some relief from past flooding problems with their street. Clarence-Rockland council approved a recommendation from administration for an exemption to the municipal purchasing policy fee upset limit to hire Atrel Engineering to do the survey and design work needed for a drainage improvement project on the road. Cost of the contract is about $50,000. Atrel Engineering is on the city’s standing offer list of contract consultants. Clark Road, from the Landry Road intersection to where it dead ends, has had past problems with flooding of some sections of the right-of-way. Part of the problem is due to either a lack of proper drainage ditches along the road or poor drainage outlets. There are about 40 households along the 2.4-kilometre stretch of road. – Gregg Chamberlain
