No open burning allowed A burn ban is in place now for the City of Cla- rence-Rockland and the Greater Ottawa areas. The reason is the high weekend temperatures, including the humidex reading, which are now continuing into mid-August. Even if a couple of days prove cooler, the burn ban will remain in place until fire departments in both municipali- ties are certain that there is no wildfire hazard risk. The ban forbids any open burning of trash, grass fires for yard or field maintenance, and no backyard cookouts involving a wood fire. Propane barbecue units are allowed to operate though. The burn ban applies to both residential and commercial property owners. For more details on the ban, contact the local fire department. Resi- dents in other municipalities in the Five Counties region may want to contact their own municipal fire departments on any new open fire restric- tions. – Gregg Chamberlain La Société d’horticulture d’Alfred et des environs n’est plus La Société d’horticulture d’Alfred et des environs met un terme à ses activités, après 30 ans d’existence. La raison évoquée est le manque de participation aux rencontres et aux activités. C’est lors d’une rencontre au mois de mars dernier que la Société a décidé que l’année 2015 sera la dernière du regroupement. L’exécutif compte terminer les projets qui sont présentement en cours, avant de dire un au revoir définitif à leur association. Créée en 1985, la Société d’hor- ticulture d’Alfred et des environs avait comme objectif de sensibiliser le public à l’importance de l’horticulture comme forme de loisir. Elle encou- rageait aussi les gens à partager, à embellir et à promouvoir la protection de l’environnement. Le regroupement permettait de rassembler les gens intéressés à l’horticulture, tout en leur donnant la chance d’échanger des plantes, des semences et des boutures. La Société a tenu à remercier tous les membres ainsi que ceux qui ont œuvré au sein de l’exécutif depuis le début. Winter freeze cost Last winter saw a rash of calls to the City works office about homes and businesses without water because of frozen service lines. The areas suffe- ring most often from the sub-zero freeze below ground were around City Hall in Rockland and other sections of Laurier Street, and in the Wal- lace and Gareau Street neighbourhoods. More than three dozen water line freezes occurred. The 2015 budget approved earlier this year did not include extra funds to cover emergency efforts to thaw out frozen water lines, so council approved a recommendation during its Aug. 4 committee of the whole session, to allow the department to allocate $90,478.50 from the water reserve fund for frozen water service work.. – Gregg Chamberlain Municipal drain works Clarence-Rockland council approved a dozen municipal drain works levies. Total cost for the annual maintenance work is more than $40,000 and will be covered through assessments on lands and roads within each municipal drain sys- tem service area. – Gregg Chamberlain
