Name: Mokhtar Elareshi Title: The Role of Satellite TV Channels as News Sources in Libya: A Study of University Students (Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya) Institution: University of Leicester Country: United Kingdom Date: 2011 Language: English Abstract: This study looks at the gratification Libyan students obtained from news services, and their perceptions of the credibility of two local news providers, Al Jamahiriya and Al Libiya, and two Pan-Arab news channels, Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya. The researcher surveyed a sample of 400 undergraduate students at Al-Fateh University using a stratified random sampling approach. The study found that the new television news services played an important role in attracting young Libyans with information they wanted. The spread of such media sources (television, radio and print) in Libya created a new type of consumer who transcends national boundaries. Statistical analyses indicated that there are distinct news consumption demographic differences defined in part by news platform (TV versus radio versus print) and in part by the type of news provider (local versus non-local TV news services). With regard to news credibility, generally, Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya received higher credibility scores than the local services. Higher credibility ratings, however, significantly correlated with an increased likelihood of reported watching of both local news services, but only one of the Pan-Arab TV channels, Al Jazeera.
