Name: Ahmed Ibrahim Alsalami Title: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Al Jazeera’s and the BBC’s Online Coverage of the Arab Spring in Arabic and English between March 15 to April 16, 2011 Institution: University of Western Sydney Country: Australia Date: 2013 Language: English Abstract: This study investigates the online news coverage by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and by Al Jazeera Media Networks (AMN) during the second month of the demonstrations of the so-called ‘Arab Spring’ that took place in a number of countries in the Arab world. This comparative study aims to discover how the online services of two global news broadcasters (the BBC and Aljazeera) reported the news of these popular uprisings and presented them to international English- speaking audiences as well as Arabic-speaking audiences. The study seeks specifically to establish and identify the key linguistic structures that journalists from both news outlets employed in constructing their narratives. It also tries to find out how the the BBC and Al Jazeera online services evaluate the different political Actors taking parts in these events and how they assess their roles and actions. Among the main actors that this study is interested to look at are the governments and the protesters in the Arab Spring countries during the first half of the year 2011. Critical Discourse Analysis was used to analyze and compare the coverage of both services.
