Run the Wave challenge

L’ORIGNAL | This summer it’s the Amaz- ing Eight on water if Mayor René Berthi- aume gets any takers to his challenge for the Ottawa River Festival. Berthiaume is taking full advantage of his positions as warden this year for the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) and also mayor of Hawkesbury, the host community for the power boat races that are part of the annual regional festival. He is challenging his fellow Prescott-Russell mayors to field teams for the Run theWave recreational relay race that is part of the river festival and serves as a fundraiser for prostate cancer research. “Ride on skis, innertubes, anything,” Ber- thiaume said, grinning, during the March 6 committee of the whole session for the UCPR council. “We’ll see who raises the most money.” There was a very brief discussion about whether any or all of the mayors who ac- GREGG CHAMBERLAIN GREGG.CHAMBERLAIN@EAP.ON.CA

cepted the challenge should wear Speedo swimwear during their leg of the relay race. General consensus was that might hurt more than help with the fundraising. The Ottawa River Festival is a three-day regional event that will be held July 5, 6 and 7 for all communities in Prescott-Rus- sell which border the Ottawa River. The powerboat race, sponsored by Poker Run America, is a round-trip rally between Rock- land and Hawkesbury. The start and finish of the race alternates each year between the two towns. While the main festival events and enter- tainments are located in both Rockland and Hawkesbury, other communities located along the river are encouraged to organize their own special events for spectators to enjoy while they watch for participants in the powerboat race day event and the Run the Wave recreational relay.

Hawkesbury native Brianna Barnes with the “Favourite Model of the Year” award she received from Faces Magazine in Ottawa last week. Now working in Los Angeles, Barnes won the honour after receiving thousands of votes from fans. $600 for fair board Champlain Township will donate $600, the same amount as last year, to the Vankleek Hill Agricultural Society. The fair, which was first held 169 years ago, contin- ues to improve, notes secretary-treasurer Evelyn Bernique in a letter to the municipal- ity. “The entertainment line-up continues to grow, as does the attendance, therefore increasing revenue and recognition of the surrounding area and businesses,” she writes.
