AWA Reports On Global Labeling

Save TIME and MONEY with the Industry’s #1 proofing system. Consistant and repeatable printing results.

According to the latest study by AWA Alexander Wat- son Associates, Asia will continue to claim the largest labeling market share, which is estimated to reach 45 percent by the end of 2022. The 14th edition of AWA’s Global Annual Review Labeling and Product Decoration explores all the dif- ferent facets of the subject, across the main labeling formats – pressure-sensitive, glue-applied, sleeving, in- mold labels – and their supply chain characteristics. Label Demand In 2019, AWA estimate that global label demand approximated to 66,216 million square meters — showing growth of some 3.2 percent over the prior year. While these figures span all the label and prod- uct decoration technologies, 40 percent of these vol- umes were in pressure-sensitive labels, 35 percent in glue-applied labels and, today, 19 percent in the sleeve labeling technologies. Regionally, the countries ofAsia continue to claim the largest market share with 45 percent of the total, fol- lowed by Europe with 25 percent share, North Ameri- ca with 18 percent, South America with eight percent and Africa and the Middle East with four percent.

C-P Flexible Packaging (Cont’d from Page 1) GreenStream sustainable packaging solutions, recent- ly introduced by C-P, is a line of flexible packaging op- tions designed for sustainability utilizing post-consum- er recycled content, recyclable materials, compostable materials, downgauged materials, and/or materials de- rived from renewable resources. The C-P GreenStream line of flexible packaging re- portedly includes options that reduce the amount of material entering the waste stream, as well as options that allow post-consumer recycled content to re-enter the stream of source materials. The C-P GreenStream portfolio includes flexible packaging materials with more than 40 percent post-consumer recycled (PCR) resin. C-P GreenStream PET flexible packaging is available with up to 100 percent PCR content—without sacri- ficing barrier performance, according to the company. It also reportedly maintains the same look and feel as flexible packaging sourced from virgin PET resin. And to address the inability to recycle multilayer film structures composed of dissimilar resins, C-P Green- Stream store drop-off recyclable flexible packaging features single-source construction, with all layers made from the same material. C-P GreenStream recyclable flexible packaging can be recycled at more than 18,000 store drop-off loca- tions across the United States. “To achieve our vision of providing packaging with less environmental impact, we developed this C-P GreenStream line of flexible packaging which address- es recyclability, compostability, renewable resources, source reduction and post-consumer recycled con- tent,” said Mike Hoffman, CEO of C-P Flexible. “As a member of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition and the How2Recycle program, we are continually invest- ing in technologies that will minimize our impact on the environment.” C-P has also addressed the recent COVID-19 outbreak by offering its customers the ability to conduct press checks and approve graphics remotely. The virtual press check system was developed to allow manufacturers of these essential products to quickly conduct press checks remotely while comply- ing with the guidelines of the CDC. Using light booths, 4K webcam equipment and se- cure videoconferencing software, C-P Flexible Packag- ing’s virtual press check system eliminates the need for on-site press checks. Entries Open For Label Industry Global Awards 2020 Entries are now open for Label Industry Global Awards 2020. These awards recognize organizations and individuals who have excelled in the label and package printing sector in 2019. The top honor, awarded to either an individual or team, is the R. Stanton Avery Global Achievement Award, sponsored by Avery Dennison. Introduced at the 2019 Label Industry Global Awards in Brussels, the Rising Star Award, sponsored by Avery Dennison and the Label Academy, once again recogniz- es the emerging talent of an individual starting their label and package printing career, with the potential of becoming one of tomorrow’s leaders. Nominees should have worked in the industry for at least five years and demonstrate a strong potential for appoint- ment at the highest levels of the profession. The award for Innovation is based on size; one for companies with over 300 employees and another for those with less than 300 employees. Entries must be for the development of a specific innovation by a sup- plier or converter company in 2019 and can either be for a new business process or technology related. The Environmental and Sustainability Award ac- knowledges a new sustainable product or process in- troduced by a converter or supplier company in the label industry during 2019. Entry is free and submissions must be received by June 26, 2020. Due to the significant increase in the demand for alcohols and solvents for use in sanitizers and pharmaceutical initiatives, the prices of these ma- terials have increased substantially, according to the company. In order to secure the needed components for the production of solvent-based inks and coatings, Sun Chemical has experienced raw material cost es- calation during the second quarter of 2020.These in- creases are expected to remain in place and possibly accelerate throughout the remainder of the year.

Study: Consumers Will Pay For Sustainable Packaging The overwhelming majority of global consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable packaging in order to decrease the impacts of non-recyclable packaging on the environment, according to new research done by Trivium Packaging. Land-origin plastic pollution has both severe eco- nomic and environmental impacts on the world, its people and businesses, according to Trivium. Plastic pollution could be resulting in an estimated economic loss of $19 billion for 87 coastal countries, according to a recent Deloitte study, while the toll plastics have on ocean ecosystems has been heavily documented. Public opinion, according to the survey, has turned so far against non-recyclable packaging use that a ma- jority of people would pay a premium to see their goods packaged in eco-friendly materials. Willingness to pay was consistent across all income categories, but how much more consumers are willing to pay correlates positively with income. The study surveyed participants for their preferences related to sustainable packaging along with their will- ingness to pay more for products with environmental- ly friendly packaging.Apparently, 65 percent of those polled said they associate plastic with ocean pollution, while 57 percent said they saw it as ‘harmful’. Esko Recognizes “Packaging Heroes”

Flexo Market News

While many industries have been hit hard by the un- precedented effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the worldwide packaging community has responded by supporting numerous welfare efforts. “These are the strangest of times,” said Jan De Roeck, Esko Marketing Director, Industry Relations and Strat- egy.“With the continuation of the global food, hygiene and pharmaceutical packaging supply chains being so crucial to society, it has been heartening to see the way packaging sectors have sought to not only meet increased consumer requirements but also go above and beyond in their response to the crisis. “Many businesses have reported huge spikes in de- mand for their services during this unprecedented time of challenge,” continued De Roeck. “Yet packag- ing converters around the world have also been in- volved in supporting the front-line efforts of health care workers – and the broader community.” De Roeck said that in the United Kingdom, colleagues at Barnstaple-based Atlas Packaging had garnered praise for keeping the critical supply chain flowing to the NHS, Military and Food Service sectors, while in Leicester, workers at Data Image Group Ltd. had been lauded for using their expertise to produce thousands of vital protection screens. “In the United States, the team at Arkansas-based Re- source Design carried out some amazing work,” said De Roeck, “designing and manufacturing Plexiglas boxes made specifically to shield Health Care Work- ers on the front lines while they save lives intubating COVID-19 patients.” Further north, colleagues at Certa Opportune in Can- ada worked around the clock to produce 1,000 sneeze guards and visors each day, while the team at AG Event Graphics Group in Ontario created effective floor graphics in support of the health care effort. “In Europe, Spanish company Flexogràfico has been hard at work creating face shields for its customers across the country,” said De Roeck, “while the team at Zeefdrukkerij Zeven in Belgium have been putting their digital finishing tables through their paces, cut- ting Plexiglas screens which can be fitted either onto counters or in meeting rooms. “Back in the United Kingdom, the sense of commu- nity responsibility extends beyond health care too,” continued De Roeck.“The Alexir Partnership came up with an amazing initiative to entertain young children with packaging through the Easter break, whilst Ket- tering-based Rigid Containers Limited donated 600 corrugated boxes to Kettering Borough Council for

from plastics, whether it’s straws, grocery bags or plas- tic water bottles, truly underscores our findings,” said Michael Mapes, CEO, Trivium Packaging. “Consumers’ focus is on sustainable living now more than ever, and they’re willing to pay to protect the planet. This pres- ents brands a real opportunity to impact purchasing decisions by offering environmentally friendly options for their consumers.” However, it would be wrong to assume that simply leaving the market to decide on this will do the trick, according to the report. The researchers also con- firmed that how much more consumers were willing to pay correlated with their income level. Only 9 percent said they would pay in excess of $2 extra for goods with sustainable packaging, while 27 percent said $0.50 was their upper limit. The US flexible packaging industry has been experi- encing rapid transformations due to the rising tariff on raw materials and rapidly changing customer buying behavior. In order to adapt to the changes and gain a leading edge, an American flexible packaging firm wanted to gather comprehensive insights into the market’s development, industry regulations, customer needs, and competitive landscape. They approached the experts at Infiniti Research to leverage their exper- tise in offering market research solution. Infiniti’s market research engagement reportedly helped the company in the U.S. flexible packaging in- dustry to understand customers’ buying behaviors and innovate packaging materials to suit online shoppers needs. Also, by closely analyzing competitors’ strategies and business models, they were able to identify the best technologies and processes to invest in to yield savings. In addition, they were able to make technology upgrades before their competitors. This helped them to efficiently meet customers’ needs and demands. In addition, by understanding supply chain challeng- es in advance, they were able to revamp their tradi- tional supply chain models and adopt innovative tech- niques. This helped the client to enhance operational efficiency and product quality.

Joining DuPont in the Mylar film division in Switzer- land in the early 1960’s, Reinhard progressed up the corporate ladder, moving to Düsseldorf in 1969 as the Manager for films in Germany. for Cyrel plates based in Frankfurt and hired young, enthusiastic printing engineers and sales staff to ag- gressively grow the business. Born in Silesia, then a part of Germany that today belongs to Poland, Reinhard turned his attention east after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. He focused on growing flexo printing in the former eastern bloc and Russia, in particular where many credit him with in- troducing flexo printing there, helping to build the economy there after the revolution. Even after his re- tirement from DuPont, Dr. Ulbrich traveled frequently to Moscow and helped introduce flexo printing cours- es at the Russian Academy of Printing in Moscow, for which he was awarded an honorary doctorate. Dr. Ulbrich leaves behind Katrin, his wife of many years and his two daughters, Barbara and Caroline as well as grandchildren Alicia and Gabriel.
