absent themselves from the assembling together of God’s saints. Soon after this first meeting the dis ciples met Thomas and said, “ We have seen the Lord.” Thomas expressed grave doubt, saying, “ Except I shall see . . . I will not believe” (v. 25). He went a whole week without relief from his doubts, but next Sunday evening when the disciples met for fellowship he was present and the Lord was there again and in a special way revealed Himself to His doubting servant (v. 27). He in vited him to “ Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side; and be not faithless, but believing” (v. 27). There is no indication that Thomas at tempted to reach out his hand. The vision of the risen Saviour was enough, and he exclaimed in magnificent testi mony, “My Lord, and my God.” Helps for the Children Thomas and the Risen Lord John 11:14-16; 20:24-29 Memory Verse: “The Lord is risen indeed” fLuke 24:34). The Lord Jesus had been asked to go to Bethany to raise Lazarus from the dead. His enemies were seeking to kill Him. The disciples did not want their Lord to go to Bethany for fear that He might be harmed. One of the disciples, Thomas, said, “Let us also go that we may die with him.” He wanted to never forsake his Lord, but he felt certain that death awaited them all if they went to Bethany. Later, after the Son of God had Him self arisen from the dead upon Easter morning, He appeared to some of His disciples. At evening time He came to the disciples who were hiding from the Jews. After the Saviour had showed them His hands and His feet, the dis ciples believed that it was truly He. Thomas was not among the disciples that evening. When the other disciples said to Thomas, “ We have seen the Lord,” Thomas replied, “ Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.” Eight days later the disciples were together again. The doors were shut, but the Son of God came through them and said, “ Peace be unto you.” Then the Lord Jesus turned to Thomas and said, “ Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side; and be not faithless, but believing.” Joyfully Thomas knew that it was truly his Lord who was talking with him. The Saviour reminded Thomas that he had not believed until he had really seen his Lord; then He said, “ Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” Have you truly believed the Easter story, the story that God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, died for your sins upon Calvary’s cross and arose again that you too might live forever? Can you say from your heart with real love for Him, “ The Lord is risen indeed” ? M A R C H , 1 9 5 2
