Local cadet training in Kingston Communauté • Commun i ty

A local cadet is taking part in a three-week Military Band program for Sea Cadets, held in Kingston. Kaitlyn Ade, a cadet fromRoyal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Stormont in Cornwall, is part of the Basic Musician Course which welcomes Sea Cadets from communities across the province. Many of the young men and women on the basic level course come to Kingston with no experience in music at all. Yet, within days of arrival, they are taking part in the centre’s morning parades, achieving music levels and putting on public performances. The course is held twice over the course

of the summer. The first crew performed live at the Elgin Days parade, while Ade’s group will be putting on a concert in Gananoque in early August. All of themusicians also take part in spe- cial classes to broaden their musical expo- sure. The cadets will study Electronic Dance Music with a professional DJ, and attending a Big Band Concert. This helps them have a greater appreciation of the different kinds of music available to them and stimulates their creativity. Once their course is complete, these young musicians will go back to their own units.
