THE STORY OF CHUIE
the lake. Suddenly, they came across a young puppy with stickers and dirt in her fur. She started following them, and before they knew it, she’d walked all the way back to the house with them. Russell and his family laughed at the funny pup. She was well-behaved but she had no collar or identification, so Russell took her to about 50 different houses in the neighborhood trying to locate her owner. No one claimed the 10-month-old puppy. Everyone we took her to said she’d shown up a few days earlier and had been living on the street. Russell wasn’t sure he could handle a dog at that point. He’d always loved them, including the dog his family had when he was growing up, but he was also in the middle of law school. At the same time, he knew he couldn’t just leave this puppy to fend for herself. He took her home, and after a week, he knew Chuie would be staying with him. Many wonder about her name. When Russell first brought Chuie home, she was very timid and scared. Russell gave her a sock to chew on, and she gnawed on it constantly. Russell also ate at the restaurant called Chuy on the same day he got her, and it seemed to be a fitting name for this timid young pup. Today, Russell and Chuie continue to enjoy long walks together, and Chuie still always follows him home.
