However, few get the needed attention to address the root cause of the problem, trying to mask the symptoms with Advil or Tylenol. The neck is very complicated in its structure requiring good movement, posture, and support. Most of the rotating of your head comes from the upper part of the neck. Therefore, this is a very important part of your body. It is where the thickest part of the spinal cord goes through the spinal canal to the brain. It is also an important area that determines how your body balances. Main Causes of Neck Pain Neck pain can start for a number of reasons such as poor posture with sitting, car accidents, stress, injuries, or even falls. Since the neck is where blood vessels travel through to supply your head, muscle tightness can cause spasms of the arteries around the nerves of the neck and head. This can cause headaches or even trigger migraines. People with neck problems often experience pain, tingling, or numbness, into the arms, hands, and even fingers. This happens, because the nerves exiting the spine in your

neck, supply sensations to your arms and hands. If you find these types of symptoms occurring, it is important that you see one of our expert physical therapists at Lonoke Physical Therapy. There is a lot that you can do to help your neck pain. The key is preventing the neck pain from starting in the first place. However, our daily lives don’t always dictate what is good for our neck and shoulders. In today’s society we sit a lot in slouched positions which is not good for the neck, upper back, and shoulders. Our jobs, driving in the car, picking up heavy objects, and repetitive straining can hurt the neck over a period of time. Have the spine experts at Lonoke Physical Therapy examine your neck alignment, posture, movement, strength, and function to zero in on the root cause of your neck pain or headaches. Then with precise treatment and expert education we teach you how to prevent it from returning. Call us today to learn more how we can relieve your “pain in the neck”!

UPPER NECK Pain or injury here is often responsible for headaches to the scalp and face. This area helps with overall body balance and the ability to rotate the neck. MID NECK Pain or injury here is responsible for weakness and pain to the shoulders, arms, hands, and fingers. LOWER NECK Pain or injury in this area often presents with limited motion and contributes to a forward head posture. As a result this increases strain on the neck causing muscle pain and tension.

“I can smile now and turn my neck. I am so happy!”

Meet Mrs. Sandra. When she came to us she suffered from severe pain and limited range of motion in her neck. Looking in any direction was painful and mild stretching elicited wincing pain. Mrs. Sandra no longer has pain in her neck and is now able to turn her head to look at traffic, etc. with ease. Check out her Improvement Report below. I was hurting so bad I couldn’t turn my neck. I was in so much pain I had gone to the ER at Stuttgart for this and they treated me with muscle relaxers and an injection for pain. It worked for about one day and came back. The spirit told me to go to therapy, so I chose Lonoke Physical Therapy because they are so nice. The therapy they gave me relieved my pain and I haven’t had to go back to the doctor!! I can smile now and turn my neck. I am so happy! Thank God for you all. God Bless you! - Sandra Outstanding RESULTS I am almost pain free in my neck! Are You Hurting Your Neck While You Sleep?

We spend one third of our lives sleeping. Therefore, how you sleep and the bed you sleep on can have a dramatic effect on the support of your body. When you sleep you need to be aware of how your neck and spine are supported. There are many different types of beds on the market today which can be very confusing for consumers. The best type of bed is the one that you try out and feel most comfortable using. Typically, a bed that is firm underneath, with a softer top helps to provide support as well as contour your body. If your mattress is old, then think about investing in a new one so that your neck and spine are supported well. The best positions to sleep in for your spine are on your back or sides. Avoid sleeping on your stomach since your spine ends up twisted, especially your neck. Over the hours of repetitive sleeping on your stomach, you can damage the joints of your spine and compress the nerves exiting your spine. Use a pillow to help support your body and take the weight of your legs off your spine. If you like to sleep on your back, place a pillow under the backs of your

thighs and knees. This should place your knees in a slight, supported bend which takes pressure off your lower back. If you sleep on your side, be sure to put a pillow between your knees. This helps keep the alignment of your spine, and takes the pressure of your upper leg off the spine. Have 1-2 pillows under your head to keep your neck in proper alignment. If you need 2 pillows stagger them so that one pillow overlaps the other by one half. The lower half goes under the shoulders, while the upper half supports the neck. As part of our SPINE Program, our physical therapists can show you exercises, stretches and techniques to relieve your pain and prevent it from returning. If you are suffering with neck or back pain, call us today to learn more about our SPINE Program and discover how we can relieve your pain, returning you to a more active, pain-free life!
