The owner-operator of the Ecolos ferry at Clarence Point is wondering if spring flooding of the Ottawa River is going to be an annual event. “I am wondering why we are getting these floods all of a sudden,” said Gilles Lafram- boise during a recent phone interview. Laframboise noted that it is difficult to estimate the financial cost for his operation because daily traffic can vary. Traversiers Bourbonnais has resumed ferry service between Cumberland on the Ontario side of the Ottawa River and Masson-Angers on the Qu é bec side. Ferry service resumed on last Sunday, after operations were sus- pended for almost four weeks because of the spring flooding.
Company officials have arranged to have the main access routes to the ferry inspected. A temporary access road is set up to allow vehicles to board the ferry until the main routes are certified safe. For now the ferry service is limited to handling vehicles weighing under five tons.

of concern about the prospect of basement flooding, the weeper drain and sump system installed in the basement held firm. Yes, the pump ran almost 24/7, just as it was designed to do but it kept the basement dry. Later that spring we installed a battery op- erated back up sump pump and a high-water level alarm in the sump hole designed to kick in if the power is off. We also purchased a second back up pump as well as a small generator to use in the event the main pump and/or the power failed. This past month, during the 2018 record high river levels, due to the ensuing high groundwater levels in the area, once again the main pump ran almost 24/7 but again kept the basement dry - just as it was de- signed to do. Like the neighbors my wife and I have spoken with, we are as one relieved that the
flooding season has passed without dam- age to our home and grateful to Woodfield Homes for the manner in which the house —particularly the drainage system— was constructed as well as for the planning of the Sunset Cove area. It has been indeed a very difficult period
for everyone impacted by the River levels around here - but when something works well as it was designed and planned to do, appreciation is due.
As a resident of a Woodfield home in Sun- set Cove, I write to tell you of my experience in living through the high Ottawa River levels during the spring of 2017 and this current 2019 extreme high-water level period. As long-time residents of Clarence- Rockland, in 2016 my wife and I decided to sell our hobby farm on Nolan Road near Hammond and move to enjoy full retirement someplace in the area. After considerable searching for a suitable area as well as for well constructed home - with the advice of a former owner of an award winning home building company in Ottawa - we purchased a Woodfield home at 2657 Chamberland in Sunset Cove as the home of our retirement dreams. An integrated Planning Act and Environmental Assessment Act process has been initiated for the Clarence- Rockland Expansion Lands Secondary Plan. The study area is located in the south end of Rockland, south of David Street on the east and west sides of Caron Street. The purpose of the Expansion Lands Secondary Planning process is to detail the land use, transportation, and servicing infrastructure related to the expansion of the Rockland urban area. The Secondary Plan will be implemented through an Official Plan Amendment to guide future development within the study area.

Le Club Powers de Rockland vibrait au son des guitares électriques, de la batterie et des voix. Le spectacle a débuté tôt en après-midi. Les spectateurs ont pu s’en donner à cœur joie jusque tard en soirée avec la vingtaine d’artistes, provenant de la région et d’ailleurs au Canada, qui ont défilé sur la scène pour le plus grand plaisir des mélomanes. Les instigateurs de cette collecte de fonds, Julie Filion et Éric Michael Hawks, en partenariat avec Centraide, se disent heureux et satisfaits de la réponse des citoyens de Rockland. « C’était important pour nous de faire quelque chose pour aider les victimes. En seulement deux semaines, nous avons réussi notre défi de réunir tous ces artistes », a raconté Mme Filion. Les fonds recueillis s’élèvent à plus de 7000 $, et ils étaient 225 à prendre part à cet évè- nement spécial. En tout, ce sont une quinzaine de commanditaires, les mêmes qui se sont impliqués au début des inondations, qui ont soutenu une fois de plus cette collecte de fonds. « La communauté est tellement généreuse, j’en suis dépassée », s’est réjoui Julie Filion. En 2017, le duo avait organisé le même évènement et avait récolté 10 000 $. « Nous espérons dépasser cet objectif, a-t-elle précisé. Country, rock and even ballads were heard within the four walls of Rockland’s Club Powers, on May 18, during the second edition of the Clarence-Rockland Flood of Hope Concert. The event aimed at collecting funds for the many victims of the recent flooding of the Ottawa River. The concert, which started early afternoon, finished in the late hours of the evening. More than 20 local and international artists were on hand to make participants dance their heart out for a good cause. Julie Filion and Eric Michael Hawks, who organized the concert in partnership with the United Way, were quite satisfied with the turnout of the event. 5 signs it’s time to replace your siding
How to maintain your wood deck
Siding is one of the most important parts of your home’s exterior. Not only does it pro- tect the structure from the elements, it also showcases your house’s style. While you may wish your siding would last forever, it will eventually need to be replaced. Here are a few signs you need new siding. 1. Visible damage. Numerous things can damage siding including dirt, the weather and moisture. If only a few pa- nels are affected, you might be able to replace them. But if the damage is widespread, you’ll need to replace the whole thing. 2. Peeling paint indoors. If you have water damage on your interior walls, it might mean that your siding is no longer effec- tively keeping moisture out of your home. 3. Your bills have increased. Siding plays a big part in insulating your home. If you notice a drastic change in your bills, your
siding may have an air leak. In this sce- nario, your heating and cooling system works extra hard to regulate your home’s temperature, which ultimately results in costlier utility bills. 4. Mould or mildew. Fungus or mould in or near the seams of your siding may indi- cate water infiltration. 5. It looks faded and old. Replacing your siding can drastically increase your home’s curb appeal. Among home reno- vations, new siding has one of the highest returns on investment. When it’s time to replace your siding, be sure to take action sooner rather than later. The longer you wait, the more likely it be- comes that other parts of your home will get damaged as a result of having deterio- rated siding.
Wood decks are timeless backyard addi- tions, but they aren’t maintenance free. When not properly taken care of, they’re prone to rotting. Here’s how to take care of your wood deck. • Inspect it. Every spring, take time to look your deck over. Examine all the compo- nents to make sure there’s no damage. If you come across any, fix it before it gets worse. • Clean it. Regularly sweep debris off your deck. Scrub it with soap and water once a year. If you’d rather use a pressure washer, be careful: highly pressurized water can
gouge holes in wood. Using a sweeping motion, always keep the washer moving.
• Sand and seal it. Every two or three years, sand your patio and apply a sealant. This will prevent the wood fromabsorbingmois- ture. You can hire a professional to do this, or you can set aside a weekend and do the job yourself. Hopefully, you’ll get to enjoy your wood deck this summer, and for many summers to come. Regular maintenance will ensure that you do.

Il semblerait que le secret de vieillir en santé est de marcher et de profiter des desserts. Irène Charbonneau, native de Clarence Creek, a fêté son 100 e anniversaire, le 16 mai dernier, entourée de ses proches, au centre Roger- Séguin à Clarence Creek. La mère de quatre enfants, grand-mère de six petits-enfants et arrière-grand-mère de neuf arrière-petits-enfants est toujours en forme, profitant grandement du magasinage et de plusieurs sorties. Mme Charbonneau avait fière allure lors de son anniversaire, portant une jolie couronne et affichant des ongles peints d’une très belle couleur. Une messe a été célébrée en son honneur. Ensuite, la centenaire ainsi que les membres de sa famille ont profité d’un bon diner au restaurant Friendly’s de Rockland. Ci-dessus, on l’aperçoit avec le maire Guy Desjardins, qui lui a remis un certificat provenant de la Cité de Clarence-Rockland. —photo Francis Racine
This year’s 2km Walk-A-Thon fundraiser, organized by Rockland’s St Patrick Catholic School, raised a record setting $8977.85. Since its creation 21 years ago, the event has raised over $100,000 for various charities and the school’s educational needs. “All of this could not have been possible without the help of many people, on and behind the scenes,” said teacher and event organizer Marianne Paoletti. Several local organizations donated funds or supported the event. Pictured are the students that collected the most funds: Brooklyn Germain ($236.30), Mason Shaw ($502.00), Helena Imran ($223.60), Jackson Rathbone ($229.00) and Kenzie Strachan ($379.00). Also in the picture is Melissa Leduc (Magic Cuts) and teacher Garry Curtis. Some of the funds amassed will be donated to the families of two of the school’s students, both battling cancer. Ce rassemblement a pour but de mettre à contribution les compétences des élèves dans les domaines des mathématiques, des sciences et de la technologie, permettant aux élèves de la 7e à la 12e année d’étudier un problème particulier en vue de le résoudre. La première journée s’est tenue le 26 avril à l’École secondaire catholique de Casselman et la deuxième, le 16 mai, à l’École secondaire catholique L’Escale de Rockland. Ivaco Rolling Mills, a major steel manufacturer in the Hawkesbury, Ontario region, is seeking for Electrical Maintenance Supervisor with a minimum of 2 to 5 years of experience, to fill a vacancy in the Maintenance Department. Applicants should have an electrical engineering degree with a P.Eng designation. A technical diploma with relevant experience will also be considered. Other requirements include a good working knowledge of electronics, familiarity with power distribution, high voltage and have excellent supervisory skills. Additionally, experience with the following equipment would be considered an asset. • AC/DC motors, AC/DC drives (GE AC/CD 2000, Allen Bradley and ABB); • PLC’s and distributed I/O’s; transformers and capacitor banks; We offer a competitive salary and benefits package.
