Koenig & Bauer Inspires Students This spring, Koenig & Bauer is hoping to inspire students to create a more sustainable future as part of the national initiative, TICCIT (short for Trees Into Cartons, Car- tons Into Trees) by visiting the Ger- man International School of Dallas, a local private elementary school. The TICCIT program, created by the Paperboard Packaging Coun- cil (PPC), a trade association for companies that make paperboard packaging, aims to teach first- through-fifth grade students about the importance of trees, recycling, and the environment. Celebrating The Environment To celebrate Earth Day, Koenig & Bauer executives Kilian Renschler, accompanied by Gerrit Zwergel, Senior Vice President of Finance and Chief Finance Officer; and Eric Frank, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Product Manage- ment, planned an educational, and interactive day planned. It began with a presentation to students on the abundance of pa- per-based products in their daily lives and the importance of recy- cling and sustainability. The inter- active session allowed students to ask questions and learn more about the paper making process, the world of print, and how it im- pacts their daily lives.

Packaging Drives E-Commerce Growth by Greg Kishbaugh T he retail environment continues to change in profound ways, especially in regards to e-commerce, a segment that has grown exponentially over the past few years. Recently, Maria Haggerty, CEO of Dotcom Distribution, analyzed the ways in which packaging mistakes can hinder brands’ efforts.

She asserts that the primary mistake brands and packaging companies make in regard to e-commerce is in the area of wrong-sizing. “Getting packaging right is a lot like the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears — if it’s not the right size, it just doesn’t hit the spot,” Haggery stated. “If you sell a variety of differ- ent-sized goods, just having a few standard mailer sizes isn’t enough. If an order is packed in a box or bag that’s too large, or has too much or too little void fill, customers will notice — and not in a good way.

unnecessary printing costs or extra packing steps, take care of it on the back end, giving customers access to a portal on your or your carrier partner’s website where they can request and print their own return labels.” Unsurprisingly, sustainability remains high on consumers’ requirements for packaging. It is one of the most active areas of research and innovation for brands, as well as a factor top of mind for environ- mentally conscious consumers, which accounts for a lot more people than it used to. According to Dotcom Distribution’s annual re- search, in 2021, 42 percent of online shoppers re- ported brands’ use of sustainable packaging wins their return business, beating out additives like free samples and gift-like packaging. Likewise, sustain- able packaging was the feature consumers found most appealing (45 percent), compared to other en- vironmental factors including ethical sourcing, fu- el-efficient transportation, and product ingredients. Sustaining Business “Part of creating an eco-friendly packaging design requires understanding and catering to a holistic customer experience,” Haggerty said. “For example, look into reversible and other types of reusable mailers. Being able to reuse packaging for their

“By not catering to various item sizes and types,” she continued, “not only are you increasing the like- lihood of product damage and customer dissatisfac- tion, but you’re likely overspending or misspending on materials. Online shoppers’ tolerance for errors is pretty low, so if something arrives damaged be- cause the packaging was oversized, they’re going to be quick to write off the company that sent it as being incompetent, lazy, or inattentive.” Returning Customers One area that all companies need to address as part of their e-commerce strategy is how to handle returns. The way a company handles its e-com- merce returns impacts how potential and existing customers view a company and, every year, it’s having a bigger impact on consumers’ purchasing decisions. Every year, Dotcom Distribution engages an e-commerce consumer survey. In 2021, when asked if participants would make a purchase from a com- pany that doesn’t have a free return policy, 55 per- cent said no. When the same audience was polled this year, that numbers increased to 59 percent. “Companies can address this desire for free re- turns with a packaging strategy that includes pre- paid returns” Haggerty recommends. “To minimize

The Koenig & Bauer management team then went outside and joined the students in transferring live saplings into empty breakfast cereal boxes to be brought home with instructions on how to plant them. Created in 2010 by the PPC, the TICCIT program is held at schools across the country around Earth Day. After classroom learning sessions, students pot tree saplings into paperboard cartons filled with soil to take home and plant with their families. The paper cartons will naturally biodegrade once plant- ed, completing the “trees into cartons, cartons into trees” lifecycle. The flexographic division is actively watching and responding to big global trends such as sustainabil- ity and recyclability of materials, according to the company, and its research and development team is actively testing materials, like new recyclable res- ins, to help the industry move forward. “During the past year, our flexo customers have reported an increased demand for plastic food packaging,” said Daniel Vilchez, Koenig & Bau- er’s Flexo Sales Director-Americas. “Data has also shown that the growing e-commerce trade is calling for weight-saving, flexible packaging.” To answer customer needs, Koenig & Bauer has invested in additional new service technicians to work hand-in-hand with customers. Additionally, Koenig & Bauer is planning to launch Webshop, an initiative that originated from its newspaper division. Creation Reprographics Signs Fujifilm Deal Creation Reprographics, a dedicated prepress partner to packaging and label printers, has signed a four-year deal to supply Flenex FW, a sustainably focused water-washable flexo plate developed by multinational electronics and technology pioneer, Fujifilm. The business supports its print customers across the FMCG, food and beverage sectors with prepress, origination and workflow solutions that enhance environmentally optimized packaging and label production. In addition to integrating renewable technologies into its prepress facilities and holding ISO14001 accreditation for environmental systems manage- ment, Creation offers a collection of sustainability focused products and services for its print custom- ers. Alongside solvent-free flexo plate technologies, Creation champions color management services and fixed color palette (FCP) printing, which mini- mizes the need for spot color inks. own purposes not only provides a convenience to customers, but the potential pass-along impres- sions that that packaging can garner, whether it’s reused to donate items to an organization, or to package goods or a gift for someone they know, is tremendous. Finally, it’s important for brands and their pack- aging partners to understand that it’s e-com- merce packaging is a company’s first impression on a company, so it’s critical that the packaging be both aesthetically appealing, as well as highly functional. “The problem is when something looks great, but doesn’t function easily or properly — for example, a beautifully designed box with zero protective fea- tures for the fragile item it’s carrying, or tons of plastic zip ties that do nothing but cause frustra- tion for the person opening the package, Haggerty said. “Developing attractive packaging that excites customers at the beginning of their unboxing expe- rience shouldn’t pave the way for a letdown later on. Try to find the right balance of presentation, protection, and practicality, and always keep your audience in mind during the design phase.”

Mondi Awarded For Packaging Innovation Mondi, a global provider of packaging and paper, and French Les Crudettes - LSDH Group’s Vegetable Division, were recognized as a Gold winner at this year’s Packaging Innovation Awards by DOW for using recyclable Functional Barrier Paper manufac- tured by Mondi to protect ready-to-eat salads. This prize follows five other wins scooped last year for the paper-based solution. Mondi’s Functional Barrier Paper replaces plastic films and laminates traditionally used for FMCG and consumer products with a recyclable and renewable solution. It reportedly consists of 95 percent paper with a functional barrier layer and keeps Les Cru- dettes salad just as fresh as the previous alternative. Mechanical properties include puncture resistance, flexibility, printability and barrier protection. The applied coating technology creates individual barri- ers against grease and water vapor while ensuring freshness for up to 10 days – the same amount of time as with the former plastic packaging. Mondi used its EcoSolutions approach to work closely with Les Crudettes to help the company meet its sustainability goals of reducing the amount of plastic in its packaging for its salads. The packaging is verified as recyclable in the wastepaper stream in France and saves 137 tons of plastic per year. Addi- tionally, the solution supports Mondi’s MAP2030 sus- tainability goal to make 100 percent of its products reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025. Geostick Invests In Bobst Digital Master 340 Geostick Group has signed an agreement with Bobst for the purchase of a Bobst Digital Master 340 label press, a fully digitalized and automated production line, from printing to embellishment and die-cutting. The new digital master 340 offers printing, embellishment and cutting in a single pass, with native integration between the UV inkjet digital engine, the flexo and converting modules. Running at up to328 feet per minute in four or six colors plus optional digital white, the Digital Master 340 is said to bridge the gap between traditional digital and flexo machines. The modular architecture is said to allow cus- tomers to configure the exact machine they need – from a digital-only version to highly customized configuration – integrating all modules available in inline flexo. It also provides the possibility to be upgraded on-site at a later stage.

DuPont Joins Apple’s Clean Energy Program

Industry Events

DuPont has joined Apple’s Supplier Clean Energy Program. By participating in the program, DuPont has committed to use 100 percent renewable elec- tricity, including renewable energy credits (RECs) in its manufacture of all products for Apple – a key milestone in achieving renewable electricity and cli- mate stewardship goals outlined in DuPont’s 2030 Sustainability Goals. The announcement follows a series of actions Du- Pont has taken to support its Climate Action goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 30 percent by 2030, sourcing 60 percent of electricity from renewable energy and delivering carbon neu- tral operations by 2050: • In 2021, DuPont achieved 15 percent renew- able electricity, including renewable energy credits, which will be highlighted in the company’s sus- tainability report publishing on May 2, 2022. This includes DuPont’s Interconnect Solutions business (ICS) — part of the Electronics & Industrial seg- ment and manufacturer of products sold to Apple — which now powers 95 percent of its global oper- ations using renewable electricity. • DuPont is a member of RE100, a global envi- ronmental initiative led by the Climate Group in partnership with CDP, which brings together com- panies committed to shifting the electricity used globally in its operations to 100 percent renewable energy. • In 2021, the company signed a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, LLC. The VPPA wind power project is scheduled to commence operations in 2023 and is expected to deliver approximately 528,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of wind-generated renewable electricity annually to the local grid. This is equivalent to approximately 25 percent of the company’s total electricity needs today.
