the attainment of bread and butter and a coffin ? But, as be fore, the true answer to the inquiry is not innate in man; we shall not solve the problem apart from the Sacred Book. There the solution is provided for us by two utterances of our Blessed Lord. “Lo, I come . . . to do thy will, O God” (Heb. 10:5-7), and “For this cause came I into the world, that I might bear witness to the truth” (Jno. 18:37). These statements find their amplification and their commentary in His prayer: “Father, glorify thy name” (cf. Jno. 12:27-28). To do the Father’s will; to bear witness to the truth; and so to glorify His name; these are the “wherefore” of our being sent into the world. Upon the accomplishment of these things, therefore, our hearts should constantly be set. To them we should subjugate every other purpose and every other ambition. We should count that gain as loss, that success as failure, which does not contrib ute to these ends. Only so can life be worthily lived; only so can our destiny be accomplished; only so can the true prize of existence be won. I . N ovember 21. “Whither goest thou?” —Zech. 2:2. ONE query remains to our life on earth (see Nov. 19 and 20). We are but “strangers and pilgrims here below” ; we are sojourners, not citizens;. what then is our ultimate destination? For we cannot believe that, with such a lofty origin, and sent for such noble purposes, we are to become extinct when our term of tarrying upon earth is o’er. This third question is perhaps the one that has most engaged the attention of man kind. “What after death for me remains ?” has been asked by myriads who were careless both as to the source and the pur pose of their life. But, once again, nature and men are dumb in answer to the inquiry; only the Lively Oracles lift the veil and give us glimpses of the life to come. Humanity has al ways had some dim expectation of a future existence, but it was reserved for Christ to bring “life and immortality to light.” It is, therefore, to the New Testament that we must turn if we would know the nature and conditions of the world that awaits us on the other side the grave. The one point that stands out most clearly is that our ultimate destiny depends upon our selves. There is an eternity of bliss and peace before us, but only upon the contingency that we fit ourselves, in this life for its inheritance.. He who would enter heaven must tread the one and only road that leads to it. That road is faith in Jesus Christ, not only as the Savior of the world, but as our own per sonal Redeemer from the consequences and the power of sin. Each one of us may well ask himself the question: “Whither goest thou ?” Are we walking with our .backs' to the Celestial City, or have we been converted (i. e., turned round) so that our faces are already Zionward? N ovember 22. "There were giants in the earth in those days.” —Gen. 6 :4. AND there are giants in the earth today. True, they are moral and spiritual rather than physical, but they are not less noxious and dangerous to us than were their prototypes to Israel of old. Intemperance, impurity, infidelity, idleness, passion, apathy, selfishness, are working their ravages on every hand, either destroying men’s lives, or imprisoning them in castle dungeons stronger and more gloomy than those of Giant De spair. The natural man views them in the spirit of cowardice and declares them to be unconquerable, as the spies reported the Anakim to be, in the wilderness of Paran. Or he arms himself with the weapons of a carnal warfare, as Saul would have armed David for his fight with Goliath of Gath. The Christian, however, takes a very different line in regard to
