&/#3&'r#3*&'4 FISHING LICENSE FEE INCREASE FROZEN The Ontario Government recently put a stop to fishing license fee increases for all Ontario residents and removed the $2 service fee. “We’re making it easier for Ontarians to get out on the water and enjoy the great outdoors by keeping fishing licenses more affor- dable,” said John Yakabuski, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry. “Next year, whether renewing a license or purchasing for the first time, there will be no price hike and no service fee. “In addition to freezing fees, the government is adding two new license- free fishing events in 2019, on the weekends of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. “Recreational fishing is a $2.2 billion industry in Ontario,” said Minister Yakabuski.– Francis Racine
Some residents are eager to see the sides of Rockland’s Laurier Street clear of snow. The snowbanks have made it difficult for some to reach the sidewalk when leaving their parked car. “They take weeks to remove them every winter,” said Hélène Poulin
on Facebook. “It’s even dangerous to drive when one of the double lanes are too narrow on Laurier.” Another resident stressed that she has a hard time getting off the bus after being dropped off because of the height of the snow banks. When asked about the matter, Julie Chartrand, Communication Officer for the City of Clarence-Rockland, stressed that the removal of such snowbanks is done sporadically. &/#3&'r#3*&'4 NO PROGRESS IN HIGHWAY 17 WIDENING, SAYS MAYOR No new progress on the widening of highway 17 has been seen yet, in 2019. That’s according to Clarence- Rockland mayor Guy Desjardins. “I haven’t heard anything about it yet,” he recently explained. “I don’t know if the whole Amanda Simard situation will affect future progress.” The mayor did stress however that he hopes to meet provincial ministers in order to discuss the matter, during the yearly Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) and the Ontario Good Road Association (OGRA) conferences. “I hope to see some positive progress made,” said Desjardins. Local Member of Provincial Parliament Amanda Simard switched political allegiances in 2018, deciding to become an inde- pendent and leaving her Progressive- Conservative seat. Simard cited the recent cuts to provincial francophone services as her reason for leaving the caucus. – Francis Racine

The Clarence-Rockland fire services received good news in December 2018. The service received $7500 from Enbridge, in order to purchase three carbon monoxide pulse oximeters. These are used in order to measure carbon monoxide levels in the blood. The three oximeters will cost a total of $10,000, meaning that Clarence-Rockland will have to spend an extra $2500. Les visiteurs au parc Dalrymple à Rockland ont eu toute une surprise, le 3 janvier dernier. En effet, un jeune chevreuil a parcouru le petit parc, un évènement qui a su captiver l’attention d’un résident de la région. The new year has begun and all the food banks in the Prescott-Russell region are reopening their doors and organizing their volunteer schedules to welcome people in need after the Christmas holiday break. “The shelves are pretty full,” said André Perras, president of the Centre d’aide Clarence-Rockland Help Centre, regarding supplies at the food bank. “We could use more space.” The foyer and the back room area of the food bank on Chamberland Boulevard have boxes and cartons of overflow donations of food and non-food items collected during last month’s hamper drive. Perras noted that volunteers also have numerous boxes of out-of-stock toiletries, pet food, and other OPOGPPEJUFNTEPOBUFECZUIFMPDBM8BM.BSU to sort through and shelve. 7JDFQSFTJEFOU/JDPMF(BVMOPUFEUIBUMBTU month the Help Centre was able to provide food drive vouchers for 257 families and also provide 215 children with at least one gift for Christmas. She also noted a trend for the Help Centre’s client list with more families that have more than one child looking for assistance. There is also more demand for infant formula and baby food. #PUI1FSSBTBOE(BVMBHSFFUIBUUIF)FMQ Centre could also use more volunteers, both to work in the food bank and upstairs in the friperie/thrift store which helps provide extra revenue for Help Centre programs. The non-profit group which operates the Bourget Food Bank and La Friperie/Thrift Store is also open for continue donations and more volunteer help. Prescott County Representatives for the non-profit groups operating food banks which serve the townships of East Hawkesbury, Champlain, and the Town of Hawkesbury all report they are in good shape in case anyone needs help. The shelves at the Hawkesbury, L’Orignal, and Vankleek Hill food banks are still well stocked, even after the various Christmas hamper distributions. “We can use more volunteers,” said Fran- çois Petit, president of the Hawkesbury Food
Last month the Hawkesbury Food Bank distributed Christmas hampers to about 400 families, which, Petit noted, is an inc- rease from the previous year’s 300. The increase depleted the shelves a bit but the Hawkesbury Food Bank is still well enough stocked for the start of January, and can use some of its cash donations “thanks to the generosity of the community” to supplement its main supplies. Lacelle said the food bank shelves have adequate stocks for January but all donations are still appreciated. “We could use donations of ground meat,” said Fernand Paquette, president of the Alfred Food Bank. “But all donations are appreciated.” Paquette said the local non-profit group enjoyed “a grand guignolée” last month thanks to the support of local volunteers and community groups, with more than enough donations to fill Christmas hampers for distribution to more than 90 families. The Clarence Creek Castors enjoyed a cheerful start to 2019 with a pair of wins over the first weekend of January. The Castors caged the Vankleek Hill Cougars in their own den 7-3, Saturday night at the Vankleek Hill Arena, and then clipped the South Grenville Rangers 3-2 at home Sunday afternoon. Saturday night, Samuel Gaudet, Kyle Goodman, and Sam Paquette each scored a pair of goals for Clarence Creek, with Thomas Lowry popping in a single. If you happen to venture in the Jean- Marc Lalonde arena on Thursdays, between 6:30 and 8:30 pm, you might be surprised to see several individuals shooting arrows at targets and life like animal replicas. They are all members of the Rockland Field Archers. “We used to practice at a local school, but they installed cushion floor in their gymnasium, therefore we had to come here instead,” said President Martin Lacasse. “We like it here though. There’s a lot of space for our members to shoot.” The Rockland Field Archers use the arena in wintertime and an outdoor field in the summer months. The club, which has over 100 members, was founded in the early 1980’s. It’s mem- bers hail from all sides of Clarence-Rockland and consist of archers from several different walks of life, as well as whole families. “Our youngest member is under ten years old,” stressed Lacasse. “Our oldest is 84 and still shooting!” The President explained that the club is opened to anyone who is interested in the sport. “We will show them the basics in a very safe environment,” he said. “We do

Lors de la première période de prolongation, Jack Sullivan, aidé de Simon Labelle et Daniel Menges, a déjoué le gardien des Colts, Rico Dimatteo, donnant la victoire à leur club. Les Nationals se classent donc au deu- xième rang de la division Yzerman, derrière les Hawks de Hawkesbury. Ils possèdent 57 points et ont une fiche de 27-10-2-1.
Les Nationals de Rockland ont remporté leur dernier match, le 6 janvier dernier, contre les Colts de Cornwall. Les deux équipes s’affrontaient à l’aréna de la CIH, devant plus de 200 spectateurs. Aucune des deux équipes n’a réussi à marquer en première période. C’est en deuxième que les choses ont bardé.
