WMGA Senior Men’s ‘A’ Team The 2017 Washington Metropolitan Golf Association Senior ‘A’ Team competition matches will begin in April and continue into the first part of May as needed. Division winners will proceed on to play single elimination quarter, semi-final, and final matches. We need the best senior golfers, age 55 and over, to represent Army Navy Country Club. Selection criteria for the team matches will be based on the 1 April 2017 handicaps (which are expected to be current and accurate). All matches are played at scratch. If you have a handicap of 6 or below and are inter- ested in being considered for the team, please contact the team co-captains, Bill Engel at (703) 899-0091 ( bengel1002@aol.com ) or Peter Jacobi at (571) 276-6256 ( petergeezergolf@comcast.net ).

2017 Adopt-A-Hole Following a very successful program in 2016, we’re looking for some fellow golfers to join us this year in helping to keep our ANCC courses in great condition, despite the 80,000+ rounds per year that we play on them. This is a huge amount of play, and when you play golf, you create divots and ball marks – it’s part of the game. It’s our responsibility as golfers to fix our divots and ball marks – and that is part of the etiquette of the game. Please help us. The Golf & Green Committee sponsors the program, which asks volunteers to pay particular attention to repairing ball marks on the greens and divots on the fairways. The Adopt-a-Hole members would usually simply pay extra attention to their hole during the play of their normal rounds, encouraging other playing partners to help. It does not take long to sweep a green for ball marks or fill a handful of extra divots as you play. We don’t expect perfection each time, but want to work towards making the course better. If a member felt his/her hole needs extra attention, he/she would be free to arrange to work on it when his/her activities would not disrupt the pace of play. Your course needs you. Please help us protect our investment and keep our playing enjoyable. Send us an email at anccadoptahole@gmail.com, and we’ll send you the full details.

Shoulder pain is a very common issue with adults over the age of 40. There are a number of different diagnoses relating to pain in a shoulder. These range from tendonitis of the rotator cuff and bicep tendon to subacromial impingements and bursitis. In all of these diagnoses, the commonality is: the abnormal and asymmetric force applied to the shoulder due to weakness in the rotator cuff. Most gym goers focus on the large muscle groups of the upper body: the pectorals, deltoids, biceps, latissimus dorsi, and triceps. With overtraining of these muscles, they begin to overpower and shutdown the smaller rotator cuff muscles (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis and teres minor). This imbalance leads to poor biomechanics of the ball and socket joint at the shoulder, thus creating a hinging movement, compared to the desired rotational movement. With hinging, evolves pinching and inflammation. The inflammation cascade follows leading to any number of shoulder diagnoses. To help prevent shoulder pain, rotator cuff strengthening should be part of any gym routine. These exercises involve resistance in all rotational planes of motion at multiple joint positions. See below: TIPS TO PREVENT SHOULDER PAIN

Internal/external rotation movement for tennis players or swimmers

Seeking the advice and treatment of a physical therapists is a great way to evaluate current shoulder pain, or help prevent any in the future. Appointments with a Doctor of Physical Therapy are available at the club fitness center by clicking here .

Fort Richardson’s Armament Did You Know?

By the fall of 1861, following the first battle of Bull Run, construction of Fort Richardson was complete and the fort became an operational unit of what would ultimately be a complex of 68 enclosed earthen forts protecting Washington against the Confederate forces arrayed against the Capital. The fort was garrisoned by a detachment of the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery Regiment, with a compliment of 13 field artillery pieces. Fort Richardson was also one of only five forts to include in its armament a 100-Pound Parrott Rifle which had the capability to fire a 100 pound shell up to 3,100 yards and an 80 pound projectile 7,810 yards. For more information on Fort Richardson and its armament and the ANCC Foundation’s efforts to publicize and memorialize Fort Richardson and other elements of the Club’s history, please click here .
