Flexo Wash (Cont’d from Page 1) The company’s new leadership has quickly been recognized by the industry, Patrick Potter having just been named Supplier of the Year at the TLMI’s annual meeting. The Supplier of theYearAward is presented each year, honoring and recognizing an individual for their ongo- ing volunteer service and dedication to TLMI and to the greater industry. Criteria for winning the award in- cludes service to TLMI on the association’s board and committees, in addition to continuous commitment to the industry as a whole by helping to promote and foster its growth.
Patrick is quick to point out that the award is the result of many people’s efforts, and while this is an individual award it reflects more upon FlexoWash as a company than upon him individually. “While this was an award for me; it was a recognition for everyone from Flexo Wash,” Patrick said.“It’s a tes- tament to the hard work my father, Ryan and our team put in before I got here.” In The Beginning Michael Potter purchased the exclusive North Amer- ican distribution rights from Flexo Wash in Denmark in 2002. Two years later, Ryan came on board. At the time, the company had only four employees, necessitating Ryan be involved in all aspects of the business: warehouse, shipping, service and sales. Being mechanically inclined, Ryan was well suited to work on the shop floor, and being naturally able to relate to people and show his concern for their prob- lems and obstacles meant he was also well adapted for sales. “In terms of sales,” Ryan said,“I was very fortunate to work alongside my Dad; I learned sales from him.” (Cont’d on Page 13) Flexo Wash management hosts weekly company- sponsored lunches for its employees in its break room.

Altana Plans To Be CO2 Neutral By 2025 Specialty chemicals group Altana plans to reduce its CO2 impact from production and energy procurement worldwide to zero by 2025, starting with converting the entire power supply to renewable energy by the end of this year. Altana will compensate for the unavoidable use of natural gas until 2025 by financing equivalent climate protection projects in the regions where CO2 emis- sions are generated. The same applies to offsetting CO2 emissions arising from necessary business trips, company cars, and the transport of goods. “We want to leave our footprint on innovations, not on emissions,” said Martin Babilas, CEO of Altana. The company had already achieved the goal it set itself in 2007 of reducing CO2 emissions by 30 per- cent in relation to gross value added by 2020. In order to further reduce the emissions, Altana is relying on greater energy efficiency as well as heat and electricity generation at its worldwide sites.

Both technology and sales acumen were put to the test in the company’s formative years, as Ryan and his father provided demos from the back of a trailer they drove from state to state, doing 250 such road shows every year. When Patrick joined the company, after 20 years in the financial industry, he wanted to focus on the same elements that had made the company grow under his father’s guidance.

Flexo Wash’s growth necessitated a move to a new, modern 12,000-square-foot facility.
“Being constantly open to what our customers tell us has been our driving force,” said Patrick.“Their input has been invaluable and has guided us every step of the way.” Patrick’s ultimate goal in joining the company was very straightforward: “I just wanted to continue this amazing legacy.” Patrick and Ryan’s adherence to customers first — as was the case with their father before them — has pushed the company to increasing heights, with year after year growth. The success meant it was time to move to a new, larger facility. Following a two-year search, Flexo Wash recently re- located to a larger, more modernized, 12,000-square- foot facility, which not only improves office, inventory and shipping and receiving space but also allowed the company to set up an in-house demo center. This com- plements the other demo centers around the world that feature the company’s products, such as Fox Valley Technical College and California State University Ful- lerton, as well as a number of OEM facilities including Mark Andy, Nilpeter, Uteco, Siegwerk,Omet, and MPS. Forward Progress In an industry — and world — increasingly focused in sustainability,FlexoWash feels it is nicely positioned to address the environmental questions and needs of its customers.

“We’ve always been heavily focused on the environ- ment, in part because we’ve internally always recog- nized its importance but also in regards to our custom- ers who turn to us for guidance on the matter,” said Patrick.“Environmental regulations change from state to state, and even county to county, so we have to be prepared to consult with our customers and help them incorporate the best technology possible from Flexo Wash to meet their particular needs. We work with our customers on a case-by-case basis.” As for the other challenges facing the flexo industry, such as reducing downtime and the move toward au- tomation, Patrick and Ryan have positioned the com- pany toward future growth. “We are the only company solely focused on cleaning, which sets us apart,” said Patrick. “And now with our expansion, we have a great environment for demos, greater capacity for inventory, and the ability to ship parts out for next-day delivery, all added to our full- time service team.” Going forward, the management team of FlexoWash knows it must look toward the future, while maintain- ing one foot in the past. “It’s important that we recognize the challenges fac- ing our customers, while also recognizing that those challenges change,”Patrick said. “We solve problems for our customers, but those problems can look differ- ent with each new visit. “And in addition to focusing on our forward progress,” he continued,“We must always honor the core beliefs that the company was founded on to begin with. Lis- tening to our customers, putting their needs first and following through on what we promise.” Wizard Labels Reports Record Gains Wizard Labels, the all-digital, online provider of cus- tom labels, reported a growth rate that was 10 times faster than the overall North American labels market, as estimated by TLMI.
