IDEAL HEATING LAUNCHES FIRST UK HEAT PUMP PRODUCTION LINE

Dedicated plumbing and heating merchant, Plumbmaster, has acknowledged its support for the groundbreaking organ donation campaign, Dáithí’s Law, unveiling a wrapped vehicle to commemorate this landmark achievement. Six-year-old Dáithí, who was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, has campaigned tirelessly for a change in the Organ Donation Laws in NI. The Organ and Tissue Donation (Deemed Consent) legislation, also called Dáithí’s Law, came into effect earlier this year, changing the way consent for organ donation is granted in Northern Ireland. Eamonn McCarthy, Director at Plumbmaster, commented, “At Plumbmaster, we firmly believe in supporting local causes and campaigns that make a tangible difference. Dáithí’s Ideal Heating has launched its first UK heat pump production line as part of a huge investment in low-carbon technologies. The company has been manufacturing many of the country’s best-selling boilers for over a century and now the business is undergoing a major transformation as it engineers the green heating solutions to support the UK’s drive to net zero. The new line is part of a £60m investment programme, which includes an expanded distribution hub, a research and development centre to pioneer the heating PLUMBMASTER UNVEILS DEDICATED VEHICLE IN SUPPORT OF DÁITHÍ’S LAW

technologies of the future and a heat pump manufacturing facility in Hull. Ideal Heating has also invested more than £2m in its flagship training centre, attended by 5,000 installers every year. Lord Callanan, Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, officially opened the new facility and met members of Ideal Heating’s Expert Academy training team and installers undergoing training. Jason Speedy, Chief Operations Officer at Ideal Heating, said, “Backed by our parent company Groupe Atlantic, we are excited

to be investing massively in our site in Hull, and to establish our new training centre, as we diversify our product portfolio and continue to innovate new technologies.” “The major investments we are making at our Hull site send out a very clear signal about our commitment to the net zero transition and to re-modelling our business to meet the needs of our customers today and into the future,” added Shaun Edwards, CEO of Groupe Atlantic UK, Republic of Ireland and North America. www.idealheating.com

journey and unwavering dedication have touched the hearts of many, and we are immensely proud to unveil this vehicle, symbolising our solidarity with Dáithí and commitment to raising awareness about the importance of organ donation.” The new vehicle, which features Dáithí’s now famous caricature, was unveiled by Dáithí at a launch event which took place at Plumbmaster’s Newry-based Renewable Energy Hub, a one-stop-shop for renewable energy and heating solutions including heat pumps, solar panels, and

underfloor heating systems. This event coincided with the launch of Plumbmaster’s new Renewable Energy Hub brochure. “It was brilliant to be able to welcome Dáithí, his parents and numerous local figures to our Renewable Energy Hub to unveil this vehicle and highlight Dáithí’s truly remarkable achievements,” Eamonn added. “We have no doubt that Dáithí will continue to inspire those around him and are immensely proud to support his campaign.” haldane-fisher.com/plumbing-heating

COVER STORY

“Grant’s innovative range of heating technologies continue to drive the heating industry forward towards achieving a zero-carbon future.”

G rant has been at the development for over 45 years, and with an enviable diverse product portfolio, the leading heating technology manufacturer has largely transformed into a renewable heating company. cutting edge of sustainable and innovative product The Grant Vortex was one of the first condensing oil boilers on the market and this unique product was the catalyst for a sustained increase in boiler efficiencies throughout the industry and reduced running costs for homeowners. The higher efficiencies from these appliances have, over the past two decades, contributed to a reduction in carbon emissions on the island of Ireland amounting to millions of tonnes. R&D BREAKTHROUGH In 2021 the company made a significant investment in a major R&D breakthrough when it innovated the award-winning Grant Vortex condensing boiler range to be HVO biofuel compatible, which will ultimately help to reduce carbon emissions in rural and hard-to-heat homes. The breakthrough will also help property owners from incurring the high cost and disruption associated with deep retrofitting when upgrading their home for their future heating needs. The use of 100% HVO can result in around 88% reduction in carbon emissions and using this fuel or a percentage blend of HVO with kerosene will enable rural and hard- to-heat properties to transition to a renewable green alternative from 100% kerosene at an affordable cost,

with minimum disruption to everyday home lives. While HVO is a relatively new fuel to Ireland, it is now great to see more HVO suppliers come to the island of Ireland, with a recent announcement of a new facility having just opened in County Cork by HVO biofuel ‘giant’, Green Biofuels. EASY ADAPTATION TO HVO For those upgrading a heating system, all Grant condensing boilers have been manufactured to use HVO by making a slight modification to the boiler, such as adapting the size of the fuel nozzle and fuel pump pressure. Older Grant condensing boilers can also be easily adapted to HVO, but this may require a new biofuel burner that is matched with the specific boiler. Since its launch, the HVO biofuel- compatible Grant Vortex range has been recognised by multiple award bodies for its ‘ahead of its time’ innovation. The company was awarded ‘Innovative Product of the Year’ at the NI Plumbing & Heating Awards 2022, ‘Best Renewable Energy Product’ at the SEAI Energy Show 2022 and was among the finalists in the sustainability category at the Irish Times Innovation Awards 2021. The Grant Vortex and Euroflame boiler ranges are available to those in the plumbing and heating trade in twenty-two models with outputs from 15 – 70kW. The Vortex range comes in a range of models, including boiler house, outdoor, combi and utility variants. Grant’s innovative range of heating technologies continue to drive the heating industry forward towards achieving a zero-carbon future.

HVAC INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS GATHERED AT THE GUINNESS STOREHOUSE IN DUBLIN FOR THE LAUNCH OF PANASONIC’S LATEST HEATING AND COOLING INNOVATIONS… Panasonic launches Aquarea K&L range of sustainable heat pumps LOW-CARBON SOLUTIONS

W ith the presence of 300 of Ireland’s HVAC industry professionals, the Panasonic team presented its vision technologies for a low-carbon society and unveiled the Aquarea K and L range of air-to- water heat pumps. The launch was held at the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin. Vincent Mahony, Ireland’s National Manager for Panasonic, commented, “We are thrilled with the buzz that was present during the event, and the positive feedback we have since received from a wide range of Ireland’s industry professionals who were present. We are all excited to see how future projects evolve, as we start to roll out these incredible new sustainable and energy-efficient products across Ireland.” Attendees to the event were welcomed and introduced to the Managing Director of Panasonic HVAC Business Division Europe, Hiroshi Komatsubara, who explained

Panasonic’s proud heritage in providing innovative heating and cooling solutions. Jose Manuel Alves, Regional Director for the UK, Ireland and Netherlands, followed next, talking through the company’s strategy to deliver outstanding performance, aligned with Panasonic’s vision of a carbon-free society and its GREEN IMPACT plan. Walter Stephens, Key Account Manager and specialist in air-to-water systems at Panasonic Ireland joined the presentation team with a full overview of the highly anticipated Aquarea K&L series, which focuses on improving energy performance and offers a more natural and sustainable future. After the presentation, the attendees were invited to the Gravity Bar on the 7th floor of the iconic Guinness Storehouse to enjoy 360° views of Dublin. They also gained valuable insight in viewing the products and speaking with the Panasonic team to discuss the products in further detail.

The K generation of heat pumps utilises R32 refrigeration, making it an excellent solution for new homes. Meanwhile, the L generation uses the natural refrigerant R290, which has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of only 3. The redesigned construction of the outdoor units of both generations provides a high level of safety, as the units are hermetically sealed for easy and flexible installation. Furthermore, the K generation retains a refrigerant link between the outdoor unit and the indoor unit, while the L generation features a hydraulic link. Both the K and L generations come in an all-in-one as well as a bi-bloc solution and benefit from a reduced noise level of up to -8dB(A) less than previous models, offering more placement possibilities. OFTEC IRELAND NEWS

Update:

PLUMBING & HEATING MAGAZINE PROVIDES AN INSIGHT INTO OFTEC IRELAND AND THE PROMOTION OF THE LIQUID FUEL INDUSTRY IN IRELAND…

THE LIQUID FUEL SECTOR IS LOBBYING HARD TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE BIOFUELS AS AN OPTION FOR DECARBONISATION ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BORDER… Groundswell of support for HVO to be included in future energy policies

OFTEC Ireland Manager, David Blevings pictured (front left) at the recent Biofuels stakeholder group meeting with DfE.

A s governments on both sides of the border wrestle with the best way forward for each jurisdiction’s future energy strategy, the size of the liquid fuel sector in Ireland makes it almost impossible to find a one-size-fits-all solution. In Northern Ireland, liquid fuel is used by around 60% of consumers, while in the Republic the figure is approximately 40%. That is around 1.2 million homes relying on liquid fuel to heat their properties. Add to that the low levels of energy efficiency in many households, lower levels of income (NI) and the high cost of retrofits and you can see the dilemma governments face in both jurisdictions. The liquid fuel sector is lobbying hard, and recent developments are encouraging. There is also a groundswell of support from politicians and consumers for biofuels to be included in future strategies. In NI, due to no Stormont Executive, the Department for Economy (DfE) advises that the heat consultation that was

scheduled for summer 2023 is likely to slip back to the autumn, if not early 2024. However, work continues and the DfE has established a biofuels stakeholder group; the inaugural meeting took place during August. Both OFTEC and NIOF have taken up positions in this group and it is encouraging to see the department taking biofuels so seriously. Biofuels are considered to be low-carbon alternatives to fossil fuels with DfE developing a call for evidence on the roles that HVO and renewable biofuels can play as work continues towards developing NI’s approach to decarbonising heating under the Energy Strategy – The Path to Net Zero Energy. In the Republic, we have met with representatives from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) to discuss incorporating HVO and biofuels into the Dwelling Energy Assessment Procedure (DEAP software – similar to SAP in GB). This would allow energy assessors to choose HVO in a biofuel-

heated home, as currently, that option does not exist. The meeting was constructive and SEAI is willing to look at incorporating HVO into the software for a 100% fuelled HVO boiler, if we can demonstrate compliance with RED II sustainability criteria for HVO used for heating. There are several homes and commercial properties locally running on HVO and the demand is for more to be converted as a ‘practical and straightforward’ route to decarbonisation without huge capital spend on retrofit works. Let’s hope the government on both sides of the border listens to the increasing volume of politicians, consumers and businesses asking for inclusion of HVO in energy policies as an option for decarbonisation. “It is encouraging to see DfE taking biofuels so seriously.”

The brochure can be found online too, covering topics such as the benefits of renewable energy solutions and details on the range of products Plumbmaster stock, as well as contact info for the committed renewables team Plumbmaster employs. August saw Plumbmaster, as part of the wider Haldane Group, host the Building Together Event. An initiative catalysed by the A-Z services the Haldane Group encompasses, it proved a huge success amongst homeowners/renovators, self-builders, and tradespeople alike. Plumbmaster as well as their Haldane Fisher and Bathline counterparts put on a display to exemplify how everything someone needs to complete their self- build journey can be found under one roof, creating the perfect opportunity for Plumbmaster to showcase their “Supply & Fit Scheme” regarding renewable technology. Esteemed suppliers of the Newry-based firm played their part too; the likes of Worcester Bosch, EPH, and Grant attended the event to showcase some of the top-class products they have available via Plumbmaster, as well as to offer demos and answer questions. During the summer months, Plumbmaster took the opportunity to revise and update its core stock range. More cutting-edge renewables technology was added to the range and solar panels were also made available via the “Supply & Fit Scheme”. Additionally, BT-1 was introduced into Plumbmaster branches, based on revolutionary TRIBRED technology and

the plumbers-tailored equivalent to CT-1. In less trade-related news, Plumbmaster waved goodbye to Gordon James, a long-standing employee of 41 years retired from the company. To acknowledge this outstanding achievement, Gordon’s colleagues organised a sponsored raffle to raise funds for the ex-employee and help send him on his way to a happy retirement. This is a testament to Plumbmasters’ willingness to recognise all the hard work their employees do.

As Plumbmaster looks ahead to the heating season, it promises to be another busy term for the company, featuring promotions on the best boilers on the market, the return of some unbeatable value boiler packs, and continued commitment to outstanding service.
