SALLE DE RÉDACTION EAP nouvelles@eap.on.ca Le Détachement de Hawkesbury de la Police provinciale de l’Onta- rio (PPO) est à la recherche d’une personne d’intérêt impliquée dans un vol d’équipement de location dans une entreprise de Hawkesbury. Le 6 février dernier, le magasin de location a signalé le vol à la police, après que plusieurs articles n’aient pas été retournés. L’enquête a révélé qu’un homme a utilisé une fausse identité pour louer des articles d’une valeur UPUBMFEFQMVTEFøø*MTBHJT - sait entre autres d’une excavatrice, d’une direction à glissement, de scies à béton, d’une plaque vibrante et d’un appareil de chauffage. La personne recherchée est décrite DPNNFÊUBOUVOIPNNFEFOWJSPO m, âgé de 30 à 40 ans, portant une barbe. Il parle français et anglais et portait une veste noire de type construc- tion avec un chandail à capuchon gris en dessous. Son véhicule est une camionnette noire Dodge Ram, Heavy Duty avec cabine double et roues arrière doubles, tirant une remorque à plateau. -FGÊWSJFS MFORVËUFBBNFOÊMB Sûreté du Québec (SQ) à exécuter un mandat de perquisition à Saint-Roch-de- l’Achigan, Québec, avec l’aide de l’Unité des crimes de la PPO de Hawkesbury. Drugs and money During the raids police seized more than 3000 methamphetamine tablets, and more than half a kilogram of cocaine. They also found and seized 16 fentanyl patches, along with a variety of other drugs and equipment used in drug trafficking. A large amount of money, in both Canadian and U.S. currency, was seized, along with several cell phones, three firearms with ammunition at least one set of brass knuckles and other prohibited weapons and devices, and five vehicles. The joint police investigation continues and more charges are pending.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) joined forces on Project Amberjack, breaking up a drug-trafficking operation in Hawkesbury and Grenville and resulting in the arrest of 20 people on a variety of charges. “The individuals arrested are the ones putting illegal and dangerous drugs into the hands of our children, our neighbours and others in your community,“ stated OPP Superintendent Bryan MacKillop. The joint investigation on drug network trafficking cocaine and methamphetamine, codenamed Amberjack, began last summer and occupied police forces on both sides of the Ottawa River for eight months. The multiple raids involved several OPP members and SQ units. Police arrested 20 people and seized a mixture of various drugs, weapons, and other items. The Hawkesbury Detachment of the OPP is in search of a person of interest involved in the theft of rental equipment, of a value of more than 270 000 $, from a local business in Hawkesbury. The person of interest is described as a male, approximately 5’11”, between the age of 30 and 40 years old with a full beard. The requests concern Ste-Marie Road north of the Route 400 intersection in Russell Township, County Road 3 between Route 500 West and the Highway 417 overpass near Cassel- man, and the section of County Road 9 entering the Village of Plantagenet. Le conseil municipal de Hawkesbury a décidé de retarder une proposition concernant le retour à l’utilisation tra- ditionnelle des bulletins de vote lors des élections. Le conseiller Yves Paquette a proposé, lors d’une réunion en janvier, un retour au système de vote traditionnel, après avoir reçu plusieurs plaintes de résidents concer- nant des difficultés à voter lors des dernières élections municipales. « Le système de vote par téléphone n’a pas été à la hauteur des attentes, tant par sa qualité que sa fonc- tionnalité », a-t-il fait remarquer. Actuellement, les contribuables de Hawkesbury votent soit par téléphone ou en ligne. M. The Hawkesbury municipal council has decided to table a vote regarding a return to the use of traditional ballots for election voting. Councilor Yves Paquette proposed the elimination of online and telephone voting, due to a lack of safety in the voting system and technical errors that arose during the last municipal elections. The majority of council, however, agreed that online voting is practical for this day in age. More information on how to improve online voting will be gathered and the subject will be brought up again at a later date. —archives

Le Centre de services à l’emploi de Prescott-Russell (CSEPR) espère que les modifications apportées à la bourse Relève emploi la rendront encore plus attrayante pour les jeunes de la région. La deuxième édition du programme, orga- nisée par le Centre des Services à l’emploi de Prescott-Russell (CSEPR), a été dévoilée le 8 février dernier. Ce programme a comme mission de réduire le nombre de jeunes qui quittent Prescott-Russell définitivement pour des secteurs plus urbains à la suite de leurs études postsecondaires. Le programme sera mis à la disposition de plusieurs autres étudiants, dont ceux qui entendent poursuivre leurs études à l’école des adultes ou dans divers domaines, dont la vente, les soins personnels et les métiers d’apprentissage, dont la plomberie, l’électricité et la machinerie lourde, parmi tant d’autres. L’an dernier, la bourse n’était disponible qu’aux étudiantes et étudiants qui se diri- geaient vers le collège ou l’université. « Le parcours postsecondaire est plus flexible dans la version deux du programme », a fait valoir Caroline Arcand, directrice générale du Centre de services à l’emploi de Prescott- Russell (CSEPR), instigateur du programme. Alors on a augmenté l’âge maximum à 21 ans. » Des changements ont été entrepris afin d’attirer le plus d’étudiants possible, ques- tion de bâtir une relève diversifiée dans la région. Mme Arcand a également souligné l’expansion des frontières du programme. « Le territoire a été élargi, a-t-elle expliqué. Pour des raisons de système, l’an passé, on avait dû se restreindre, alors que cette année, on a vraiment décidé d’étendre le programme à travers l’ensemble des Comtés unis de Prescott et Russell. » Toutes les écoles et tous les étudiants de Prescott- Russell auront donc accès au programme. À l’inscription, on leur verse 500 $, puis à chaque fois qu’ils reviennent pour un emploi d’été ou qu’ils ont un emploi à temps partiel dans la région, on leur verse une autre tranche de 500 $. » La somme maximale que pourrait toucher un étudiant serait donc 5000 $ au total. D’ailleurs, la directrice générale a fait appel aux organismes, entrepreneurs et munici- palités de la région qui auraient envie de
contribuer à la bourse. Ceux-ci sont invités à y contribuer 5000 $ afin de subventionner plus d’étudiants. À l’heure de mettre sous presse, trois entreprises se sont engagées à remettre la somme, ce qui permettra de faire grimper le nombre de récipiendaires à 13. Le programme de bourses sera offert jusqu’en 2022. Celui-ci constitue un inves- tissement du CSEPR de 250 000 $.

Le 7 février dernier, les élèves et les membres du personnel du Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est ontarien (CSDCEO) se sont habillés un peu plus chaudement qu’à l’habitude. Pour la deuxième année, La journée de la p’tite laine a été soulignée dans les écoles et au siège social. À tous les premiers jeudis de février depuis 2010, les Canadiens sont invités à souligner La journée de la p’tite laine pour participer à la lutte contre les changements climatiques. Il s’agit simplement de baisser légèrement la température des thermostats dans les écoles et au bureau central pendant la journée et d’organiser des activités ludiques, mais significatives afin de conscientiser l’ensemble des communautés scolaires sur la place qu’occupe l’énergie dans nos vies et l’importance d’en réduire la consommation. « Dans notre plan stratégique, nous avons trois grands objectifs au niveau de l’écoresponsabilité, soit la réduction des gaz à effet de serre, la réduction des déchets et la réduction de la consommation de papier », a fait valoir François Turpin, directeur de l’éducation et secrétaire du CSDCEO. —photo fournie

In the old days, Danka Bergen told students at Pleasant Corners Public School in Vankleek Hill, a treaty between local native groups always began with a promise. “This is a model of self-governance,” said Bergen during a February 8 workshop, as she held up a length of leather string, adorned with beads and several small pieces of leather. The commitment string, or a “promise string” as it might also be called, was always the first step, she explained, in any formal treaty made between neighbouring groups PG'JSTU/BUJPOGPMLEVSJOH$BOBEBTQSF colonial history. It was also the first step GPSUIF'JSTU/BUJPOTJOUIFJSEFBMJOHTXJUI Europeans arriving with the intent to stay on Turtle Island, as the Algonquin and other Eastern Canadian native groups referred to the world. #FSHFOJTBNFNCFSPG,PLVN.BLXB Cultural Enterprises, and for the past 12 years has visited schools to share her knowledge of traditional native culture, folklore, legends, and history with students. There are no actual final farewells for anyone, just “until next time”, whenever that might be. Making a promise That kind of optimistic view is the spirit behind the “promise string” of the traditional treaty process. Bergen explained that before anyone says a single word of bargaining or negotiation, they all have to sit down first and craft their commitment strings to show their dedication to making the treaty process work. The strings then serve as representations for each person involved in the treaty talks. When a string is placed inside the council circle, it means the person is involved in the talks. When a string is placed outside of the circle, a person is not involved, or may not be interested, or may just be absent. Each part of a promise string has special meaning. The top bead represents the person. The top circle of leather represents the Four Directions or the Four Winds. The upper group of beads represents the pillars
