An Electric Watch Numerous watchmakers through out the world have been involved for some 10 years in research in an attempt to develop an electric watch that will be practical. The Ham ilton Watch Company has finally reached the goal. The presi- dent of Hamilton has been wearing an experimental model for four years and it has met all the re quirements of practicality. Mr. Sinkler, president of Hamilton, said that it incorporates the first basic change in watch construction in almost 500 years. The electric watch Completely eliminates the main spring, an integral part of portable timekeeping devices since it was invented in 1480 by Peter Henlein. The movement in this new watch is so exquisitely engineered that a tiny energizer the size of a small shirt button will run it for an ex pected 18 months and the company guarantees it for 12. When the 1 y2 volt battery has run out, it can he replaced by a jeweler for about $1.75. The electric watch operates on chemical energy stored in the tiny energizer. This energy is converted into electrical power as it releases a stream of electrons through a coil of fine wire fixed to the balance wheel. This energy causes the bal ance wheel to oscillate, this in turn runs the watch. Mr. Sinkler says, “Actually what is going on here is a precise minia ture power plant built into the bal ance wheel, which in turn powers the gears and turns the hands of the watch. The process holds the movement to an amazing accuracy of more than 99.995 percent.” This accuracy is interesting and in the future it may be improved, hut it can never reach perfection.
