&/#3&'r#3*&'4 SOCIAL HOUSING FLEXIBILITY The United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) are trying to convince the new provincial government to relax the guidelines just a little bit on spending social housing funds. A UCPR delegation met with provincial officials on the issue during the recent Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference in Ottawa. UCPR Chief Administrator Stéphane Parisien said during an interview the counties want “more flexibility” on the grant spending deadlines so that counties council and staff can make “better planning decisions” for the money. At present provinical support grants for planning and infrastructure projects often come with a deadline when the money must be spent. Government officials promised to review the situation and contact the counties later. – Gregg Chamberlain FLOOD MAPPING MEETING The United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) will send a delegation to meet with federal Environment Minister Cath- erine McKenna to talk about financing aid for an in-depth floodplain mapping study along the Ottawa River. Clarence- Rockland Mayor Guy Desjardins also asked during the August 29 UCPR council meeting whether Hydro Québec also has some responsibility for main- taining up-to-date floodplain maps of the river. FARM TAX UPDATE The UCPR says that any changes to the farm tax rates are the provincial government’s responsibility. The Bylaw also creates a public process for filing complaints under the UCPR Code of Conduct approved earlier this year. Two men were recently arrested in Alfred-Plantagenet for stealing a boat and a trailer. Alexandre Doyon, 24, of Saint-Mathias-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, and William Gagné, 22, of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, were arrested on Sunday, August 26, in Alfred- Plantagenet. Members of the Hawkesbury Provincial Police detachment responded to an incident at a commercial property in Wendover, where the suspects had fled the scene pulling a pontoon boat on a trailer. Une journée de musique et de culture traditionnelle, y compris d’une panoplie de chanteurs, aura lieu le samedi 8 septembre à Hawkesbury. La Journée TRAD aura lieu de 13h à minuit au centre culturel le Chenail de Hawkesbury. Nicole Charbonneau et Robert Bourdon, en collaboration avec le Centre culturel Le Chenail, préparent depuis des mois cette journée traditionnelle (TRAD). Cette journée sera remplie de musique et de culture traditionnelle et présentera de nombreux chanteurs qui maintiennent la tra- dition de l’art oral et de chansons à répondre à capella et jams de musiciens traditionnels. Cela se sert comme un patrimoine vivant à ne pas oublier et que les organisateurs se tentent de faire revivre dans l’Est ontarien depuis trois ans. L’entrée pour la journée est gratuite et comprendra un spectacle du groupe Hom- mage aux Ainés, un des meilleurs groupes Trad du Québec, des sets carrés callés avec Louis Racine et les Pourquoi Pas, des jams de musique traditionnelle (violon, harmonica, accordéon) et des cercles de chansons à répondre. Plusieurs artisans seront également sur les lieux. Comme l’an dernier, les campeurs pourront installer leurs tentes sur les rives de la rivière des Outaouais sans frais. Pour

Art is going to be an election issue for the October ballot in Prescott-Russell if the regional arts council has its way. “We’re really focused on calling out to the community in this election,” said Shanna Steals, president of the Prescott- Russell Arts Council (CAPRAC), during a phone interview August 27. CAPRAC has launched a campaign to make art and culture part of the October 22 election ballot issues that voters and municipal council candidates consider.
