PRINCIPAL REPORT

BILL PANAS ACTING COLLEGE PRINCIPAL

Hello Lakes families,

I would like to begin by acknowledging Remembrance Day. Our college will honour the occasion with a minute silence at 11 am. Our school captains will complete a reflection honouring our soldiers and paying tribute to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. This will be followed by the Last Post. Members of our college community will present at dawn services across RSL clubs within our municipality. As the weather improves, please remember our hat policy and sunscreen campaigns. Make sure your child comes to school with a water bottle and dressed in the summer uniform. Our uniform supplier tells me that they have plenty of stock in store. Please contact us at the college if you need support with uniform. In addition, if your child rides a bike or scooter to school, please remind them that they must follow road laws and wear helmets.

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter PRINCIPAL REPORT

We have experienced some canteen maintenance issues on the secondary campus. As a result, the canteen has been out of action for secondary students. I would like to apologise to students and families for the service interruption. We are working with our plumbers to resolve the issue as quick as possible. Ordering on primary has continued as normal and limited services have resumed on Secondary. 2023 Booklists, college levies, subject selections and supporting information have being emailed out to families this week. Families need to arrange to purchase the items specific to their child ’ s year level. College levies are non - compulsory but greatly assist in supporting the delivery of curriculum programs. Please note that Secondary subjects classified as electives for example: “ Climbing Everest ” have an additional “ user pay ” levy due to certain activity requirements or cost of consumables. There are also numerous fee - free elective alternatives available to families. Please contact the general office with any concerns or questions. The college is available to support families and their respective needs at all times. Last week we completed our School Review. Students, Parents/Carers, Teachers and Administration staff were asked for feedback on the school operations and our performance. Examples of areas that were reviewed include

Classroom observations

Academic rigour

Assessment & Reporting to parents/carers

Focus group findings from students, staff and parents/carers

School highlights and challenges

School performance

Community perception and connections

Transition points.

Thank you for your honest feedback through this process. It has been appreciated by the entire panel. The college will spend some time reviewing the information and providing feedback to the Executive Teams from both campuses. I will have the final recommendations and a draft outline of our next Strategic Plan, including goals and Key Improvement Strategies for your review before the end of 2022. The data and evidence collected and discussed by the panel will lead to the development of our next School Strategic Plan 2023 - 2026. This is an exciting prospect for our college and our community as we strive to be the school of choice in our municipality. Finally, I wanted to make a huge shout out to ALL the Year 12 teachers who have been extraordinary this year! They have worked extra hard to develop and deliver their respective subjects with precision and in such a calm and low - key manner. You have been an inspiration to our students but also to us! Thank you and I am sure that the results will justify your endeavours and commitment demonstrated in spades! I look forward to celebrating their school journey at our Year 12 Graduation @ Emerald Receptions on November 17 together with their families, current and previous staff,

Have a lovely weekend!

Bill . Acting College Principal.

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORT

Hello to our Parents and Carers,

Firstly, a huge congratulations to our first ever Year 12’ s on finishing their classes, such a massive milestone for them personally and for our school as our first graduating class. Best of luck to those sitting exams over the last few weeks!

Our School Review is progressing well. The panel have spent the last couple of weeks reviewing data from the preliminary work done earlier in the year, including the Parent Opinion Survey; reviewing the school ’ s performance against targets in the outgoing Strategic Plan; observing classes in action on both campuses; observing teacher planning; running focus groups with students/parents/classroom teachers/specialist teachers/education support staff; and learning about how student performance data is collected and used.

The final day will produce key directions to the school, articulate high - level key improvement strategies and determine targets for the new 4 - year Strategic Plan.

Thank you to everyone who has provided feedback in to the running of our school. Some very clear themes have emerged from the conversations which will be very useful to the school going forward. It was also very clear, and heartening, to see the progress the school has made over the past 4 years, in both academic results and in new processes, despite 2 years of pandemic disruption.

At our most recent School Council meeting, we:

• Brainstormed a list of potential mid - scale capital expenditure projects on both campuses. Some of the ideas brought to the table included landscaping, bike shelters and alterations to the flexible working spaces.

Endorsed the 2023 Parent Curriculum Contributions. These will be communicated to families shortly.

Our next School Council meeting is on 15 November. As always, if anyone has any concerns or would like to discuss anything about our school, you are more than welcome to email me at amanda.farrelly@education.vic.gov.au

IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP WELLBEING TEAM

It is no secret that we all struggle with maintaining good sleep hygiene at different stages of our lives, but the importance of sleep holds a great deal of significance in affecting how we feel. Sleep impacts lots of different areas of a person ’ s life, like their physical health and wellbeing, mental health, emotional wellbeing, concentration and memory retention. The recommended amount of sleep for young people aged 5 - 13 years get 9 - 11 hours of sleep and 14 - 17 years is 8 - 10 hours a night. A recent review found that teenagers in Australia were sleeping an average of 6.5 - 7.5 hours on a school night.

So what can we do to improve our sleep and make sure we are getting the amount of sleep we need to fully participate in life?

There are some very simple things that we can do to ensure that we are getting enough quality sleep. Things like:

Try to stick to a sleep schedule – going to sleep and waking up at a similar time each day, even on weekends. Try to limit your use of screens an hour before bed. Try doing a mindfulness activity before bed – eg. Body scan, deep breathing, reading, colouring. Try to create a night time routine – so that our bodies know when they are winding down. Try to keep your bedroom associated with sleep – avoid watching TV or studying in your bedroom.

Some of the benefits of maintaining good sleep hygiene are that it:

Improves physical health

Strengthens the immune system

Improves concentration

Improves memory retention

Helps to regulate emotions

Reduces stress

CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS

WHAT IS MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES THEORY?

Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences proposes there are eight different types of intelligences consisting of: Linguistic, Logical/Mathematical, Spatial, Bodily Kinaesthetic, Musical/ Rhythmic, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, and Naturalist. At The Lakes South Morang College, we celebrate all intelligences. Take a look at what each intelligence might look like.

Verbal Linguistic: The ability to use words effectively, whether orally or in writing.

Musical Rhythmic: The ability to perceive, discriminate, transform and express musical forms. Interpersonal: The ability to notice and make distinctions in the intention, motivations, moods, feelings and thoughts of others. Intrapersonal: The ability to access personal feelings, reflect and act upon them.

Visual Spatial: The ability to perceive the world visually.

Logical Mathematical: The ability to use number effectively and show strong logical reasoning skills. Bodily Kinaesthetic: The ability to use body and mind to display the performance of physical tasks and functions.

Naturalist: The ability to recognise, identify and classify species of the natural world.
