USA WOMEN’S AMERICUP TEAM 2023 RESULTS
LEON, MEXICO • JULY 1-9, 2023
With a roster of collegiate stars and an average age of 20, the USA Women’s AmeriCup team came home with a silver medal for the second time in history. The U.S. had a 5-2 record and played for a chance to win its third straight gold. In the tournament opener, the U.S. saw 11 of 12 players score to beat Venezuela 80-54, with Rickea Jackson and Angel Reese getting 11 points and Janiah Barker 10. The U.S. also dominated the boards, a trend that was echoed throught the tournament, with a 62-33 advantage. Rayah Johnson grabbed 14 rebounds and Reese nine. The U.S. had a much tougher battle in improving to 2-0 in Group A play, scoring the last nine points for a 65-56 victory over Argentina. Jackson led the way with 17 points and five rebounds, while Lauren Betts came off the bench for 10 points and 11 rebounds, including 10 boards in the second half. Jewel Spear hit three clutch 3-pointers, including a game-sealing trey with 59 seconds left. Reese had 15 rebounds, the second-most in U.S. AmeriCup history, behind Aliyah Boston’s 19 vs. Puerto Rico on June 19, 2021. Following a day off, the U.S. faced an imposing test in Brazil and lost 67-54, snapping the Americans’ 19-game AmeriCup winning streak. Betts, starting her only game of the tournament, had 11 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots, while Jackson added 10 points. Betts’ three blocks tied Boston’s AmeriCup record, set June 13, 2021. Betts also matched Reese with the second-best rebounding performance in U.S. history in this event. Facing Cuba to finish group play, the U.S. bounced back in a big way, using a 37-2 run in the first half to roll to a 106-44 victory and clinch second place in Group A. Seven players scored in double figures. Betts continued her impressive play with 17 points, 14 rebounds and another record-tying three blocks. Jackson had 16 points and six rebounds, while Reese contributed 12 points and 14 rebounds. Johnson added 12 rebounds as the U.S. 75-35 advantage on the boards. In the quarterfinals, the inside combo of Betts and Reese fueled the U.S. to a 68-49 victory over Colombia. Betts had her fourth consecutive double-double with 16 points, 14 rebounds and a record four blocked shots, while Reese had 13 points and 18 boards. Betts broke the single-game blocks record she held with Boston. Reese surpassed her’s and Betts’ 15 boards from earlier in the tournament for the second-most in U.S. AmeriCup history. The U.S. had eight blocks in the tournament. Jackson added 15 points. The U.S. clinched a spot in the gold-medal game by scoring the last five points to beat Canada 67-63. Betts had 12 points, four rebounds and another three blocks. Reese posted her third double-double in a row with 10 points and 13 rebounds as well as three blocks. Reese put the U.S. on top to stay 64-63 on a putback with 2:35 remaining. Betts broke the U.S. AmeriCup record for blocks in the tournament with 14, surpassing Boston’s 11 in 2021. Brazil stood in the way of the U.S. winning a third straight gold medal, but the Brazllians proved to be the better team, using a 25-10 run in the third quarter to pull away for a 69-58 victory for their record sixth AmeriCup gold. Jackson, who led the U.S. during the tournament at 14.6 points per game and was named to the All-Star Five, finished with her best scoring output of the AmeriCup, recording 22 points, including 10 in the first quarter. Betts added her fifth double- double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and one block, giving her a U.S.-record 15 in the tournament. Reese had 78 rebounds in the tournament and Betts 76, both surpassing the U.S. record of 60 set by Venus Lacey in the 1989 AmeriCup. They finished second and third among AmeriCup rebounders, averaging 11.1 and 10.9 per game.

USA WOMEN’S AMERICUP TEAM 2019 RESULTS
SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO • SEPTEMBER 22-29, 2019
It had been 12 years since the USA sent a team to what was previously the FIBA Americas Championship. Despite the gap, the result was the same: the U.S. women again returned home with a perfect record and the gold medal. Coached by Dawn Staley, the USA’s first test of the 2020 FIBA AmeriCup proved no test at all. The taller and much more experienced Amer- icans dominated their way to a 110-31 victory over Paraguay. Eleven of the USA 12 players scored in the romp, with Diamond DeShields leading the way with game-highs of 20 points and eight assists. Recording 31 assists as a team and getting 22 points from Sylvia Fowles, the USA defeated Colombia 88-46. Getting points from all 12 team members, the USA topped Argentina 100-50 behind 16 points from Katie Lou Samuelson and nine assists from Jordin Canada. Behind 19 points from DeShields, the USA closed out preliminary play and clinched the No. 1 seed for Group B after defeating previously unbeaten Brazil 89-73. The USA offense was also aided by Tina Charles, who finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double. Led by a defense that limited host Puerto Rico to just 27.0% shooting from the field (20-74 FGs), and owning a 63-34 rebounding advantage, the USA advanced to the gold medal game after a 78-54 semifinal win. Fowles led all scorers with 17 points and 13 rebounds and Charles also posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Struggling with its shooting, the USA turned to its defense and claimed the 2019 FIBA AmeriCup gold medal with a 67-46 victory over pre- viously undefeated Canada. The USA, playing in its first AmeriCup since 2007 when it also won gold, ended Canada’s streak of back-to-back AmeriCup titles with its perfect run. Olympic veterans Charles and Fowles paced the USA with 12 points apiece. The USA, which outscored its six opponents by 38.7 points a game during the tournament, featured three players on the AmeriCup All-Star Five Team - Jordin Canada, DeShields and Fowles, who also was named MVP of the tournament.

USA WOMEN’S AMERICUP TEAM 2007 RESULTS
VALDIVIA, CHILE • SEPTEMBER 26-30, 2007
Guided by Seattle Storm head coach Anne Donovan, the U.S. had one goal in mind: capturing the gold medal to secure a berth in the 2008 Olympics. The goal was achieved with a 5-0 performance that saw the U.S. outscore its opponents by 40.6 points a game. The offense, which was paced by 13.8 points a game apiece from Candace Parker and Tina Thompson, poured in 98.0 points, while the USA’s defense kept its foes to 57.4. Opening against Cuba, the red, white and blue needed all four quarters to put away the islanders 85-79. In what would be the USA’s clos- est contest of the tournament, Parker scored a team-high 21 points, Diana Taurasi contributed 16, while Katie Smith and Thompson each notched 13 points. Sue Bird dished out nine assists. The USA ran out to an 11-0 run against Jamaica and never looked back en route to an eventual 115-47. The performance saw each team member score at least four points. Seimone Augustus’ game-high 19 points (8-8 FGs, 3-3 FTs) led the charge, Thompson followed with 18, Taurasi had 12 and Bird and Kara Lawson chipped in 11 apiece. Putting away Canada early, the U.S. went on to capture an 85-37 victory in its third and final preliminary round game. Thompson’s 14 points led, while DeLisha Milton-Jones and Parker each chipped in 12 points. Meeting Argentina in the medal semifinals, the North Americans romped to a lopsided 104-53 victory. Rebekkah Brunson came off the bench to score a team-high 20 points as the USA catapulted into the gold medal game. Also aiding in the scoring barrage were Parker with 17 points, Augustus had 15 and Katie Smith notched 11 points. A double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds from Taurasi highlighted five U.S. scorers in double digits as the team completed its mission of qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympics by crushing Cuba 101-71 in the gold medal game. Also scoring in double digits in helping the U.S. capture gold were Thompson with a game-high 18 points, Smith scored 15, Lawson checked in to add 14 and Parker tallied 12 points. With the one and only FIBA Americas Olympic berth going to the gold medalist, Argentina, Brazil and Cuba qualified to compete in the 2008 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

USA WOMEN’S AMERICUP TEAM 1997 RESULTS
SAO PAULO, BRAZIL • AUGUST 5-10, 1997
Headed by 1997-2000 USA coach Nell Fortner, had two goals: qualify the U.S. for the 1998 FIBA World Championship and win a gold medal. While the squad fell six points shy of the gold, the Americans captured silver and advanced to Worlds. Comprised of 10 athletes from the American Basketball League (ABL), one European professional and a collegiate standout, the USA was forced to wait until the second day of competition to show the Americas its hand after the Dominican Republic failed to arrive at the compe- tition on time. In its opener against Argentina, the USA was paced by its youngest member as Chamique Holdsclaw poured in 21 points and added a game- high seven rebounds in an 88-53 victory. Taj McWilliams checked in for 15 points. Sheri Sam scored a team-high 15 points, while Teresa Edwards and Edna Campbell had 11 and 10 points, respectively, as the USA pounded Canada 85-66. The victory placed the United States at the top of Group B and advanced the squad not only to the medal semifinal round but assured the country a spot in the ‘98 World Championship. In the first of two semifinal round games the USA was edged 87-83 by Brazil. Facing Cuba, Holdsclaw celebrated her 20th birthday with a game-high 32 points as the Americans earned a hard-fought 94-90 victory. Edwards scored 26 points and collected seven rebounds, and with 25 seconds remaining and the U.S. holding a 92-90 lead, converted a pair of free throws to seal the victory. The hometown crowd, a pregame jersey retirement of celebrated three-time Olympian Hortencia Marcari Oliviara, and a game-high 38 points from soon-to-be retiring Brazilian Olympic hero “Magic” Paula Silva proved too much for the USA as the Americans lost for the second time in three days to Brazil, this time 101-95 in the gold medal game. Edwards and Holdsclaw finished the game with 21 points each to lead the United States. Holdsclaw capped the tournament as the USA’s leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 19.0 points and 6.2 rebounds. Edwards followed with 14.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and a team-high 5.6 assists.

USA WOMEN’S AMERICUP TEAM 1993 RESULTS
SAO PAULO, BRAZIL • JUNE 26-JULY 4, 1993
Led by Tara VanDerveer, the 1993 USA World Qualifying Team returned with the gold medal and a 6-1 slate. The top seven scorers on the squad eventually were named to the 1994 USA World Championship Team. Opening against Canada, the USA received 23 points from Lisa Leslie and 18 from Ruthie Bolton in an 82-74 win. The U.S. dismantled Chile 121-41 as Jennifer Azzi’s 30 points off the bench led the USA’s offensive clinic that saw all 12 players score, includ- ing six in double digits. Meeting up with Mexico to close preliminary play, the USA overpowered its opponent in a 97-54 victory. This time it was Bolton’s 19 points off the bench that paced the attack, while Leslie added 16 as everyone scored, five in double digits. In the semifinal round the USA upended Cuba 89-78 behind 21 points from Leslie and 19 from Azzi. Trailing Canada by five points at halftime, 38-33, the USA rallied in the second half to record a 76-69 win in a balanced effort led by Katy Sted- ing’s 17 points. Carla McGhee and Leslie also notched 15 and 11 points, respectively. In its final semifinal round contest, the U.S. suffered its only loss, 99-92 in overtime to Brazil, despite 19 points from Leslie, 16 from Bolton, 15 from Steding and 10 from Dawn Staley. However, with Brazil standing at 6-0 and the USA holding a 5-1 record, the gold medal game two nights later would give the United States a chance to avenge the loss. Not wanting to celebrate the Fourth of July with anything less than gold, behind 20 first half points from Leslie, the United States established control early and held on to capture the gold medal with a decisive 106-92 win.
