Power Tool Use Power tools are very helpful in Engineering. When safe work practices are used, we should not experience an injury; however, if we take shortcuts and not follow safe work practices, our chance of injury significantly increases. Before using a power tool, think about what you want to do and how to do it safely. A little time thinking up front can save a lot of pain on the back side. Make good decisions to protect yourself. When working with power tools, consider the following: • DO NOT operate any power tool unless authorized and trained to do so. Not knowing what you are doing is a leading cause of injury. • Inspect the power tool to ensure that all of the safety guards are in place and properly adjusted. • Power cables are to be in good condition and not cut or frayed. • If there are problems with the power tool, get it repaired before using it. • Ensure there is sufficient room to maneuver and work around the power tool, no cramped quarters. • Wear your Personal Protective Equipment, such as safety glasses, face shield, ear protection, gloves, etc... • Keep your eyes on the task. If distracted, stop until you can return to the work to do it safely. • Do not place your hands or other body parts in the line of fire of the power tool operation. • Work at a safe pace. Rushing may result in loss of control and an injury. AT-RISK POWER TOOL USE SAFE POWER TOOL USE
