Independent II First To Install Domino Digital Press BY JACKIE SCHULTZ When high-speed single pass digital printing was first introduced to the corrugated market a few years ago, Finn MacDonald and his team at Independent II watched closely. MacDonald knew he wanted to offer customers digital printing, but he was not convinced that the existing technology was well-suited to his company’s mix of business.

Pratt Industries Opens New Corrugated Facility In PA Conyers, Georgia based Pratt Industries Inc. announced the opening of its new 409,000- square-foot facility off of Austell Powder Springs Road in Austell, Georgia. Pratt Industries is America’s fifth-larg- est corrugated packaging company and the world’s largest, privately-held 100 percent recycled paper and packaging company. The new facility, called the Intermodal Logis- tics Center, is part of a 502,428-square-foot, $32.9M investment being constructed by Tay- lor & Mathis. “We are excited to see Pratt Industries bring quality environmentally friendly new jobs and investment to the City of Austell,” said Ollie Clemons, Mayor of Austell. “Pratt Industries’ mission to protect and nurture our natural resources aligns with the pro-busi- ness, pro-environment attitudes in our city.” This is Pratt Industries’ first investment in Cobb County. The facility is located about 20 minutes west of Atlanta with easy access to Interstates 20 and 285. “Locating in Austell gives Pratt Industries convenient access to I-20 and I-285, a stra- tegic advantage for reaching their customers

Founded in 2006 in Louisville, Kentucky, Independent II is a full ser- vice sheet plant that MacDonald, who is President, likes to refer to as a brown box and light brand manufacturer. Services include design, manufacturing, warehousing and delivery to customers in the food and beverage, e-commerce, home goods, innovation/technology and man- ufacturing sectors. “We understand where our strengths are and where our market is. Our DNA isn’t built around a lot of high-end display or POP work,” Mac- Donald says. “As those first generation high-end digital printers came out, we would stay connected with that technology and who it was best suited for, but we never felt like it was speaking to us.” Nonetheless, the company did offer digital printing to its customers through a coalition of partners. It was a way to learn more about digital without having to make a sizeable investment in the equipment. MacDonald found an alternative solution last year when Domino in- CONTINUED ON PAGE 24 The Independent II and Domino team. AICC: RISI’s Containerboard Price Increase Reporting Is ‘Confusing’ AICC, The Independent Packaging Association notes RI- SI’s recent recognition of a $20/ton increase in the price of kraft linerboard (compared to RISI’s previously announced $60-$70/ton increase) and finds this partial recognition of the announced increases confusing. AICC believes these changes in announcements are a result of the chaotic nature of the marketplace, which is supported by Pulp & Paper Week ’s March 19th report providing a number of ex- amples of the turmoil in the marketplace. RISI indicated that “strong demand” was behind the announced and successful $50/ton increase in November of 2020. RISI’s latest reporting downplays demand and speaks “primarily of supply side disruptions,” “cyber-at- tacks” and a “lack of invoicing.” Is demand strong because of the increase in long term need or is demand strong be- cause paper is “tight?” RISI’s reporting describes the mar- ket as tumultuous and offers a series of quotes from pro- ducers, converters, and buyers in support of RISI’s claim. AICC’s position is that, instead of providing insight, RISI’s partial increase recognition creates even more un- certainty, chaos, and tumult. RISI has created a complex- ity because of the respondents quoted (which includes quotes from suppliers, converters, and buyers), some CONTINUED ON PAGE 36

AICC’s Emerging Leaders Announce Training Dates

The AICC Emerging Leaders (EL) recently confirmed new networking and training dates for Spring 2021. Some train- ings will be held virtually and in-person to accommodate all ELs. Access to executives in and outside of the corru- gated industry has been high on the priority list for current EL members and is often reported in EL surveys as one of the most valuable parts of the program. To address this desire of ELs, the programs coordina- tors Scott Ellis and Virginia Humphrey, along with the EL delegates, have planned a series of virtual C-Suite we- binars to be held quarterly. Each of the C-suite webinars will cover a different topic including: Finance, Operations, Sales and Human Resources, and include a time for ques- tions from the ELs. This series is hosted free of charge for all ELs. Next quarter’s C-suite webinar will focus on sales and market- ing and is scheduled for May 20 at 3:00pm EST. With a sales focus in this webinar, the discussion will be centered around recreating a sales strategy when a client base has been significantly disrupted. In addition to the webinar and networking event, the delegates are excited to host the first in-person EL event this year and look forward to the training that will be of- CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

40 ft of paper travel from preheater to hot plates 3 seconds of heat, glue and bonding 1 chance to get it right! the ZONE

Design & Production

Chicago Electric offers 10 technology solutions to control ‘the Zone’ CORRUGATOR Sectoral preheating plate

Our sectoral preheating plates provide direct heat by means of a double steam circuit, allowing for efficient heating in hard-to-access locations, as well as to act as a steam shower to open the paper’s fibre, making it receptive to absorbing the heat and the glue.

This translates into increased speed and improved quality of the cardboard sheet finish.

The system’s main advantages are as follows:

• The plate may only be used to heat, only to humidify, or both options at the same time. • The plate is sectored, which allows for applying humidity to the sections. • It provides temperature in previously inaccessible locations and near the location needed. • It compensates the loss of temperature dissipated due to distance, speed or limitations of the exiting preheaters. • Quick transferring of heat to the paper. • The combination of the hot plate and steam shower allows for providing heat even to the hardest papers to heat. • Does not dry out the paper. • Possibility of operating as a humidifier and pre-conditioner. • Maintains and improves the fibre’s elasticity. • Acts according to the operator’s needs. • Facilitates the paper’s hygroscopy to absorb the glue and improve rubberising.

calibrations and settings. Bar systems avoid this, but compensate this with the risk of exces- sive glue application. The system contains many wearing parts. Solution The contact roll combines the ad antage of both systems and ensures minimum contact between board and applicator roll. The system uses small pneumatic cylinders in order to achieve a “soft touch.”

6. Gap Control 7. Curved Plate 8. Roller Shoe Press When it comes to a short-term increas of web tension, spring loaded systems with shoes or airpressure activated system have problems in compensating these. The system is lifted for a short time. This may result in de-lamination and in the ‘double kiss’ effect. Solution For a defined and exact bonding point of the web fiv weight rollers will be installed usually over the first flat hotplate of the heating section. The rolls are mounted into a frame, which is actuated by means of two pneumatic cylinders. P oductivity Issu —Double Kiss Bonding

The outer shoes can be lifted in accordance to the paper width. The shoe bars will be delivered pre-assembled for a short installation time. —Liftable for easy paper infeed and for cleaning of the machine —Position adjustable in paper direction to avoid grooves in hotplate Press Productivity Issue—Poor Heat Transfer Rollers are usually limiting the heat transfer, since they often have contact mainly on the edges of the plates due to wear or bent plates. They also cause often loss of caliper and bearing need to be replaced frequently. Airpressure actuated systems can only supply a limited pressure and have com- pared to shoe systems a closed surface. Ryan Chappell, Formerly Of Louisiana Corrugated, BCN Writer, Dies At 62

Ryan Eugene Chappell passed away peacefully in his home on March 11th in Monroe, Louisiana, at age of 62. He was born in Monroe on Au- gust 30th, 1958, to mother Elouise and father William Chappell and was

raised in a wonderful home surround- ed by devoted family who provided a solid foundation that would create the great man he would become. Elouise would pass untimely; however, Bill would remarry Sandra Beach Chap- pell, who would become Ryan’s lov- ing mother and an integral part in all of his life. He graduated from Caldwell Par- ish High School in 1976 and attended Northeast Louisiana University (now University of Louisiana in Monroe) , where he graduated with a degree in accounting along with an MBA. undergrad, he met his lifetime love, Susan Elizabeth McGraw Chappell, and they wed on January 2nd, 1982. For the next 40 years, their love for each other and those in their life would be apparent to any who knew them. They were blessed with three children, Neil Ryan, Sarah Margret, and Rachel Lauren, all of whom adored and appreciated Ryan’s love for them and the lessons he bestowed. He was also blessed and thrilled to know three grandchildren, including Ashley and Neil’s daughters, Wilder and Scarlet, and Sarah and Lael’s son, Luca. Early on, it was easily apparent that Ryan was meant to help people. He would wake up each day searching out someone in need. He collect- ed friends as naturally as breathing, and would be able to bridge these connections literally across the world, enriching countless lives along the way. Incredibly, he never thought about his gains or profits, his only joy was in seeing others be successful. He was truly humility personified. Not only was Ryan a faithful servant, but he was a tenacious and brave fighter. In October 2006, he was diagnosed with leukemia. For 15 years he fought with strength and grace, ultimately being cured with a stem cell transplant in 2016. Throughout his journey, he was constant- ly laughing, reading, moving and engaging his care team, bringing his

He was an example of how faith and hope can bring about miracles and he treated his faith and cancer as opportu- nities to reach out to others who needed someone who was there. Ryan’s hobbies included woodworking, cooking, travelling, music, family, flying and writing articles on the industry and life lessons for Board Converting News . Graphic Packaging To Extend Product Range For PaperSeal

The new PaperSeal Slice and Wedge solutions com- bine the safety, flexibility, efficiency and enhanced brand- ing opportunities that partners have come to expect of the PaperSeal Tray range, while opening up the solution’s ca- pabilities to new product categories. De Genova concluded, “Demand for sustainable fi- ber-based alternatives to plastic packaging is very high, and we are working on a variety of new PaperSeal tray in- novations to assist our customers in meeting their environ- mental targets. PaperSeal Slice and Wedge are just two examples of how we can diversify our flexible PaperSeal range to meet the sustainability priorities of the individual brands and retailers we work with.”

Atlanta, Georgia based Graphic Packaging International (GPI) will launch two innovations to extend its award-win- ning PaperSeal tray range for new applications. Following the success of the PaperSeal tray, both the new PaperSeal Slice and PaperSeal Wedge offer brands and retailers a recyclable, barrier-lined, paperboard pack- aging alternative to plastic thermoformed trays for sliced meats and cheeses. Both PaperSeal Slice and Wedge offer enhanced branding capabilities with high-quality graphics that deliver on-shelf differentiation. “Compared to traditional plastic trays, PaperSeal Slice typically reduces plastic by 75 percent and PaperSeal Wedge by 80 percent,” said Ricardo De Genova, Graph- ic Packaging’s SVP, Global Innovation and New Business. “The innovative new designs also use lighter weight pa- perboard to deliver reduced pack weights that can sup- port our customers’ packaging sustainability goals. Both are available as formed or flat trays.” Both solutions have been designed to withstand the rigors of today’s supply chain with excellent seal integrity and shelf life equivalent to traditional plastic trays. As with the existing PaperSeal trays, the top film and liner can be separated from the paperboard for ease of post-use recy- cling.

Ranpak Launches PadPak Auto-Coiler For Cushioning

Concord Township, Ohio based Ranpak Holdings Corp. has announced the North American launch of PadPak Au- to-Coiler, the company’s newest solution for heavy cush- ioning. PadPak Auto-Coiler is an on-demand system that creates a sustainable, paper-based cushioning solution to displace environmentally harmful alternatives, such as foam and plastic. Auto-Coiler automatically forms Ranpak’s proven pads into a protective spiral disc that supports a variety of prod- ucts, including heavier items that exceed hundreds of pounds. The innovative technology is designed for very heavy, dense or high-value products that are typically diffi- cult to ship. Industries that have a need for this increased level of protection include industrial manufacturing, home furnishings, medical equipment and automotive. “At Ranpak, we believe that what’s good for the envi- ronment is also good for the bottom line, and that sustain- able solutions don’t need to compromise product quali- ty, effectiveness or ease of use,” said Omar Asali, CEO of Ranpak. “The addition of PadPak Auto-Coiler to our broad range of paper-based solutions gives even more manufac- turers a new and better option to meet their supply chain, shipping and sustainability goals.” Visit www.ranpak.com for more information.

troduced the X630i digital corrugated press. The single pass, flexo caliber machine was installed at the Louisville facility in August and is the first installation in North Amer- ica. Printing at speeds up to 246 fpm (75m per min), the X630i offers throughput on a small footprint, measuring 10 ft H x 38 ft W x 21 ft D and allows for a wide range of print options. MacDonald says the press is “fundamentally dif- ferent” from other digital presses for corrugated because it can operate in an industrial production environment, has a relatively small footprint, uses aqueous inks and includes components from well-known corrugated industry suppli- ers. The X630i is based on Domino’s proven Generation 6 ink jet platform, which has nearly 1000 global industri- al installations. The press is ideal for shipping containers, shelf-ready packaging, and displays and features Domi- no’s i-Tech intelligent Technology for high quality printing. The Domino AQ95 aqueous ink set is Swiss Ordinance and Nestle compliant for food packaging and enables printing on a wide range of uncoated and coated stocks, with no pre-coating primer or bonding agent required. The print resolution is 600 dpi.

JB MACHINERY

Domino has partnered with well-known suppliers, such as Esko for the digital front end, and SUN Automation for the lead edge feeding system. “That was reassuring to us,” MacDonald says. “SUN is in a lot of plants and if you’re getting that sheet through the machine uniformly and con- sistently without any issues – good in is good out – then that’s a great start and something that we thought made this a strong partnership. The SUN experience in the ma- chine meant that important element of transfer was well- known and had a good DNA behind it.” The servo driven continuous bottom feeding system provides automated setup for sheet sizes, caliper and vac- uum assist. It can store jobs and sheet sizes for quick set- up and can feed E- to B/C-flute. Another feature on the X630i that MacDonald likes is the range in blank sizes that the press can handle, which he says is more accommodating for Independent II’s The press has a SUN Automation lead edge feeding system.

downstream converting machines. “If you’re running sin- gle outs on a flexo folder-gluer, you can start single out at the digital press. The ability of the press to be able to handle that size blank allows us to put the print perfor- mance in digitally and then single pass it through the flexo folder-gluer to add the diecut performance and join the box. We don’t have to go to a diecutter and break it down and then take it to a specialty gluer to put it back togeth- er,” he explains. “That’s really an area of opportunity that is under-addressed in the market. Having a wider range of dimensional blank sizes go through the Domino press means less work downstream.” The print area on a 63- x 118-inch blank is 53- x 118-inch. “That’s a great size blank for a 66-inch diecutter or a 37- inch to 66-inch flexo,” he says. Domino is currently working on a stacker that will be installed on the press later this year. Responsive Packaging This investment provides a competitive advantage and strengthens Independent II’s strategy to offer ‘responsive packaging,’ a term that MacDonald uses to describe the packaging needed for these tumultuous and disruptive times. With everything changing daily, the press offers cus- tomers a cost-effective way to quickly change their brand- ing and messaging as needed. “This last year has shown us that if it can be turned upside down or changed drastically, it can happen. If dis- ruption happens we’re going to be in a unique position to help our customers through it,” MacDonald says. “Respon- sive packaging is a very poetic term that you can sell to and that resonates with consumers. Our Domino press can

help us have that responsive conversation with our custom- ers and with their consumers. I really think that’s such a great opportunity.” The press is expected to open up new business and new markets for inside/out- side printing, customization, variability and a wider color

pallet. And then there is the opportunity to run everyday orders, the type of business that funnels through Indepen- dent II on a daily basis. “There is this neat area to capitalize on in the everyday world. So much of our life is made up of everyday things and I really think we are in a position to be more dynamic in the everyday space,” MacDonald says. “The space above us is well-known. That’s high-end pre- mium, but when you get down to where so many of us are impacted with our packaging, that’s this everyday level.” While the press is suitable for short and medium runs, MacDonald says order sizes at Independent II vary, de- pending on the job. “We’ve run 10,000, 15,000 or 30,000 piece orders. If someone has a 50 or 100 piece order Finn MacDonald
