Independent II First To Install Domino Digital Press BY JACKIE SCHULTZ When high-speed single pass digital printing was first introduced to the corrugated market a few years ago, Finn MacDonald and his team at Independent II watched closely. MacDonald knew he wanted to offer customers digital printing, but he was not convinced that the existing technology was well-suited to his company’s mix of business.
Pratt Industries Opens New Corrugated Facility In PA Conyers, Georgia based Pratt Industries Inc. announced the opening of its new 409,000- square-foot facility off of Austell Powder Springs Road in Austell, Georgia. Pratt Industries is America’s fifth-larg- est corrugated packaging company and the world’s largest, privately-held 100 percent recycled paper and packaging company. The new facility, called the Intermodal Logis- tics Center, is part of a 502,428-square-foot, $32.9M investment being constructed by Tay- lor & Mathis. “We are excited to see Pratt Industries bring quality environmentally friendly new jobs and investment to the City of Austell,” said Ollie Clemons, Mayor of Austell. “Pratt Industries’ mission to protect and nurture our natural resources aligns with the pro-busi- ness, pro-environment attitudes in our city.” This is Pratt Industries’ first investment in Cobb County. The facility is located about 20 minutes west of Atlanta with easy access to Interstates 20 and 285. “Locating in Austell gives Pratt Industries convenient access to I-20 and I-285, a stra- tegic advantage for reaching their customers
Founded in 2006 in Louisville, Kentucky, Independent II is a full ser- vice sheet plant that MacDonald, who is President, likes to refer to as a brown box and light brand manufacturer. Services include design, manufacturing, warehousing and delivery to customers in the food and beverage, e-commerce, home goods, innovation/technology and man- ufacturing sectors. “We understand where our strengths are and where our market is. Our DNA isn’t built around a lot of high-end display or POP work,” Mac- Donald says. “As those first generation high-end digital printers came out, we would stay connected with that technology and who it was best suited for, but we never felt like it was speaking to us.” Nonetheless, the company did offer digital printing to its customers through a coalition of partners. It was a way to learn more about digital without having to make a sizeable investment in the equipment. AICC: RISI’s Containerboard Price Increase Reporting Is ‘Confusing’ AICC, The Independent Packaging Association notes RI- SI’s recent recognition of a $20/ton increase in the price of kraft linerboard (compared to RISI’s previously announced $60-$70/ton increase) and finds this partial recognition of the announced increases confusing. AICC believes these changes in announcements are a result of the chaotic nature of the marketplace, which is supported by Pulp & Paper Week ’s March 19th report providing a number of ex- amples of the turmoil in the marketplace. RISI indicated that “strong demand” was behind the announced and successful $50/ton increase in November of 2020. RISI’s latest reporting downplays demand and speaks “primarily of supply side disruptions,” “cyber-at- tacks” and a “lack of invoicing.” Is demand strong because of the increase in long term need or is demand strong be- cause paper is “tight?” RISI’s reporting describes the mar- ket as tumultuous and offers a series of quotes from pro- ducers, converters, and buyers in support of RISI’s claim. AICC’s position is that, instead of providing insight, RISI’s partial increase recognition creates even more un- certainty, chaos, and tumult. AICC’s Emerging Leaders Announce Training Dates
The AICC Emerging Leaders (EL) recently confirmed new networking and training dates for Spring 2021. Some train- ings will be held virtually and in-person to accommodate all ELs. Access to executives in and outside of the corru- gated industry has been high on the priority list for current EL members and is often reported in EL surveys as one of the most valuable parts of the program. To address this desire of ELs, the programs coordina- tors Scott Ellis and Virginia Humphrey, along with the EL delegates, have planned a series of virtual C-Suite we- binars to be held quarterly. Each of the C-suite webinars will cover a different topic including: Finance, Operations, Sales and Human Resources, and include a time for ques- tions from the ELs. This series is hosted free of charge for all ELs. Next quarter’s C-suite webinar will focus on sales and market- ing and is scheduled for May 20 at 3:00pm EST. With a sales focus in this webinar, the discussion will be centered around recreating a sales strategy when a client base has been significantly disrupted. Delaware, Ohio based Greif, Inc. announced last week that it is implementing price increases on certain paperboard products, which are in addition to previously announced price increases. A $50 per ton price increase for all grades of uncoated recycled paperboard (URB) and a $50 per ton increase for all grades of coated recycled paperboard (CRB) are effective with new orders placed. These price increases are in response to continued robust demand across the Greif paperboard network and ongoing cost pressures in production and transportation.

AICC Spring Meeting To Address Challenges, Economic Outlook During the AICC Spring Meeting, April 26-28, at the Omni Amelia Island Resort, Amelia Island, Florida, speakers will address the challenges of the past year, what’s next, and the economic outlook. Ryan Chappell, Formerly Of Louisiana Corrugated, BCN Writer, Dies At 62
Ryan Eugene Chappell passed away peacefully in his home on March 11th in Monroe, Louisiana, at age of 62. He was born in Monroe on Au- gust 30th, 1958, to mother Elouise and father William Chappell and was
raised in a wonderful home surround- ed by devoted family who provided a solid foundation that would create the great man he would become. Elouise would pass untimely; however, Bill would remarry Sandra Beach Chap- pell, who would become Ryan’s lov- ing mother and an integral part in all of his life. He graduated from Caldwell Par- ish High School in 1976 and attended Northeast Louisiana University (now University of Louisiana in Monroe) , where he graduated with a degree in accounting along with an MBA. undergrad, he met his lifetime love, Susan Elizabeth McGraw Chappell, and they wed on January 2nd, 1982. For the next 40 years, their love for each other and those in their life would be apparent to any who knew them. They were blessed with three children, Neil Ryan, Sarah Margret, and Rachel Lauren, all of whom adored and appreciated Ryan’s love for them and the lessons he bestowed. He was also blessed and thrilled to know three grandchildren, including Ashley and Neil’s daughters, Wilder and Scarlet, and Sarah and Lael’s son, Luca. Early on, it was easily apparent that Ryan was meant to help people. He would wake up each day searching out someone in need. He collect- ed friends as naturally as breathing, and would be able to bridge these connections literally across the world, enriching countless lives along the way. Jackson Paper To Expand Operations With HP Digital Press For Corrugated Sylva, North Carolina based Jackson Paper Manufactur- ing Co. is expanding operations with the launch of digi- tal printing services on the industrial-grade HP PageWide C500 digital press, as it expands its sustainable corrugat- ed range of products. The new HP PageWide C500 press will operate at Sus- tainable Printing, a new Jackson Paper digital printing arm located in Georgia, where the unit will be installed this summer. Printing at speeds up to 246 fpm (75m per min), the X630i offers throughput on a small footprint, measuring 10 ft H x 38 ft W x 21 ft D and allows for a wide range of print options. MacDonald says the press is “fundamentally dif- ferent” from other digital presses for corrugated because it can operate in an industrial production environment, has a relatively small footprint, uses aqueous inks and includes components from well-known corrugated industry suppli- ers. The X630i is based on Domino’s proven Generation 6 ink jet platform, which has nearly 1000 global industri- al installations. The press is ideal for shipping containers, shelf-ready packaging, and displays and features Domi- no’s i-Tech intelligent Technology for high quality printing. The Domino AQ95 aqueous ink set is Swiss Ordinance and Nestle compliant for food packaging and enables printing on a wide range of uncoated and coated stocks, with no pre-coating primer or bonding agent required. Domino has partnered with well-known suppliers, such as Esko for the digital front end, and SUN Automation for the lead edge feeding system. “That was reassuring to us,” MacDonald says. “SUN is in a lot of plants and if you’re getting that sheet through the machine uniformly and con- sistently without any issues – good in is good out – then that’s a great start and something that we thought made this a strong partnership. The SUN experience in the ma- chine meant that important element of transfer was well- known and had a good DNA behind it.” The servo driven continuous bottom feeding system provides automated setup for sheet sizes, caliper and vac- uum assist. It can store jobs and sheet sizes for quick set- up and can feed E- to B/C-flute. downstream converting machines. “If you’re running sin- gle outs on a flexo folder-gluer, you can start single out at the digital press. The ability of the press to be able to handle that size blank allows us to put the print perfor- mance in digitally and then single pass it through the flexo folder-gluer to add the diecut performance and join the box. We don’t have to go to a diecutter and break it down and then take it to a specialty gluer to put it back togeth- er,” he explains. “That’s really an area of opportunity that is under-addressed in the market. Having a wider range of dimensional blank sizes go through the Domino press means less work downstream.” The print area on a 63- x 118-inch blank is 53- x 118-inch. “That’s a great size blank for a 66-inch diecutter or a 37- inch to 66-inch flexo,” he says. Domino is currently working on a stacker that will be installed on the press later this year. Responsive Packaging This investment provides a competitive advantage and strengthens Independent II’s strategy to offer ‘responsive packaging,’ a term that MacDonald uses to describe the packaging needed for these tumultuous and disruptive times.
