Reading=Success...

Come to a Storytime Today! it’s that Simple! One of the most important ways to ensure children are ready for school is to read and share stories with them from the moment they are born… yes, that early! And we at the Chattahoochee Valley Libraries are here to help you and your child do just that with our SIMPLE STEPS STORYTIMES and 1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN programs! Studies have proven that children who enter kindergarten already able to recognize letters, connect them to sounds, and identify simple sight words have a greater chance of

success throughout their school years. But even before they can read independently, children can (and should) build those essential pre-reading skills that lay the foundation for classroom success such as connecting words to familiar objects, expanding vocabulary, and developing awareness of print. Even simple activities like recognizing rhyming words or clapping out syllables can make a big difference in a child’s literacy development.

That’s why our early childhood-focused SIMPLE STEPS STORYTIMES can play a vital role in your child’s growth. Based on the simple and proven formula SING-TALK-READ-WRITE- PLAY, these Storytimes provide opportunities for your child to engage with the written word in fun ways while providing examples for parents and caregivers of how they can read to and with their children. All you need is 15 minutes a day to make an impact. And that’s where the 1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN program comes in. It may sound like a big number, but it adds up quickly—if you read just one book each night, you’ll reach 1,095 books in just three years. Using our dedicated Beanstack app tracker, you’ll be surprised how quickly you reach that goal. So join us— the Storytime Experts —this fall! We have over 150 free Simple Steps Storytime sessions available in our branches. Just stop by, no reservations needed. And while you’re here, sign up for 1,000 Books and be sure your Library Card is up-to-date. Whether your child is a baby, toddler, or getting ready for their first day of school, it’s never too early—or too late—to start. Every story shared helps build language, imagination, and a lifelong love of reading… and helps set the foundation for success at school and beyond.

ALL EVENTS WILL BE AT COLUMBUS PUBLIC LIBRARY

Bob Crawford Author, Historian & Avett Brothers Bassist October 8 • 11:30am When he’s not on tour or in the studio as the bassist for the American folk rockers The Avett Brothers, Bob Crawford can be found pursuing his passion for American History on podcasts like American History Hotline and The Road to Now . This multi-talented musician and writer has now written his first book : America’s Founding Son: John Quincy Adams, from President to Political Maverick . Bring your lunch to this event where Crawford will discuss his passion for history and why he thinks Quincy Adams might be American’s greatest ex-president. All the Love You Can Use The Letters of Carson McCullers by Carlos Dews October 12 • 6:00pm Carson McCullers became a profligate letter writer after shooting to fame with her first novel The Heart is a Lonely Hunter . Now Carlos Dews, the pre-eminent McCullers scholar and founder of the Carson A Legacy in Peanuts Author Haisten Willis discusses his history of Tom’s Foods McCullers Center at Columbus State University, has collected and edited this correspondence into his latest book All the Love You Can Use: The Letters of Carson McCullers . Intimate, earnest, and as heartbreaking as it is uplifting, this collection is a product of remarkable scholarship and dedication. The result is the most comprehensive portrait of McCullers ever published. Co-sponsored with the McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians at Columbus State University. November 19 • 6:00pm It’s the amazing story of how one man—Tom Huston (with an important assist from George Washington Carver)—created a business that aided the South’s industrialization and established the humble peanut as a cash crop. Journalist (and Columbus native) Haisten Willis traces the full legacy of Tom’s Foods, from its innovations, its stability as an industry leader mid-century, to the slow demise over the course of the last three decades as the company’s assets were sold (and re-sold). Co-sponsored by the University of Georgia Press.

FREE ADMISSION & NO RESERVATIONS NEEDED Books will be for sale and autographs will be available at all events.
