Le conseiller Gerry Miner se représente au conseil municipal de Champlain dans le quartier de Hawkesbury ouest. M Miner siège au conseil municipal depuis près de 20 ans. Il avait même siégé au conseil municipal de Hawkesbury ouest avant la fusion des deux municipalités en 1998. Le natif de la région met en valeur son expérience pour la campagne électorale. « Quand t’as siégé sur un conseil municipal pendant près de 23 ans, que ça soit la voierie, que ça soit l’administration, il faut que tu sois au courant, a affirmé M. Miner. Si tu ne l’es pas après 20 et quelques années, t’es peut-être mieux de ne pas te présenter. » D’après M Miner, le dossier Colacem prendra toute son importance pendant le prochain terme du conseil. « Tous les dos- siers sont importants, le budget, les services à la clientèle, a dit M Miner. Le dossier qui va accaparer pas mal de notre temps ça va être Colacem. Je suis sûr que ça va être le dossier qu’il va falloir surveiller de près. » « On sait que dernièrement, dans le journal de Montréal, il y a plusieurs choses qui se sont dit à propos du plan de ciment à Port Daniel en Gaspésie, à propos du fait que c’est un des plus gros pollueurs

Je ne suis pas pour m’obstiner là-dessus, je ne suis pas un chimiste, mais ils disent que vivre autour de ça, tes vitres ne sont jamais nettes et tu ne peux pas étendre ton linge dehors. On a vécu ça à Kilmar du côté du Québec, avec la cimenterie qui existait dans l’ancienne mine. Residents of Prescott-Russel may receive “Mystery House” scratch cards in the mail. The Mystery House Scratch cards will always be winners. They are part of a marke- ting scheme by an Ontario-based company. Anyone with a “winning” card who calls the telephone number provided is then asked if they are homeowners and what their occupation is. The operator will then tell the caller that “when any homeowner has a winning card, he would be guaranteed one of the six prizes” offered. The prizes listed are: a Samsung television, a Macbook Air laptop computer, B&TTP(JGU$BSE B7*11FSLT&OUFSUBJ - OFNFOUHJGUDBSE B/JOUFOEP4XJUDIDPOTPMF or a $250 Amazon gift card. En 2000, il s’est retiré pendant quelques années après avoir déménagé à L’Orignal, dans le canton de Champlain, pour y vivre quelque temps. Il est ensuite revenu dans Hawkesbury-Est et s’est présenté au poste de maire adjoint en 2003. Il a remporté le poste et est maire adjoint depuis ce temps. Réalisations «Nous avons fait beaucoup de choses, a-t-il dit, en jetant un regard sur ses 28 années au conseil. Nous faisons ce que nous pouvons. Nous avons obtenu beaucoup de subventions (du gouvernement supérieur) pour les routes et les ponts.»
L’un des faits saillants de son mandat au conseil a été de voir Hawkesbury-Est devenir le site du Concours international de labour de 2011. Il est également fier de son implication avec le maire Robert Kirby et le reste du conseil dans le lobbying pour le prolongement d’une ligne principale de gaz naturel vers le village de Chute-à-Blondeau. «Je tiens à remercier les gens de Hawkesbury-Est pour la confiance qu’ils m’ont accordée», a-t-il dit, ajoutant qu’il a toujours l’intention de rester impliqué dans les affaires municipales en tant que simple citoyen. «Vous pouvez prendre ça de moi, a-t-il dit en gloussant. Roger Chartrand and Louise Lalonde are competing for the seat on le Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est Ontario that includes Alfred-Plantagenet Township. Township residents eligible to vote should contact the municipal office to confirm that their names are on the voters list.
Voters in Alfred-Plantagenet Township now have their list of candidates for the October 24 municipal election. Over 160 golfers and volunteers came together for the 15th annual Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) Champions for Kids Foundation (C4K)’s golf tournament. Vankleek Hill Fair breaks previous at- tendance record. “I was astonished by the people here. Crazy amount!” said Al Nixon, president of the Fair committee. While no official number has yet to be compiled, Nixon is assured the amount of people in attendance at the Vankleek Hill fair has by far surpassed any previous number. “Even Friday night with the combine derby, it was great,” he said. “There was a pile of people here. It is by far our biggest income year too. Our gates and bar are probably up $120,000 from 2019.” Nixon believes this was partly due to the COVID-19 restrictions being loosened. “Everybody here seemed to be so happy to be able to get out and talk to people, to mingle with people,” said Nixon. “The whole weekend went perfect”. Both habitual fairgoers and newcomers were happy to have the fair back in town. “It’s just wonderful!” said Mary Higginson, A long-time resident of the area.
