Welcome to the Redwood Coast Music Festival! The Redwood Coast Music Festival Board is proud to present yet another fun-filled four- day event featuring great music from many diverse genres, including Traditional Jazz, New Orleans Jazz, Swing, Blues, Soul, Zydeco, Rockabilly, Boogie, American Roots, Country, and Western Swing. I think we have something for everyone! To listen and dance to all this great music, we have seven different venues, with dance floors in every venue. Make sure you visit each one of our beautiful and scenic festival venues as each one is a part of Eureka history. While you’re here, plan to explore the many great stores and restaurants in Eureka’s Historic Old Town District. You can walk along the coastline to enjoy the scenic views of the Pacific Ocean, or you can view our amazing Redwoods by visiting one of Eureka’s newest features, the Redwood Skywalk at the Sequoia Park Zoo. You’ll be able to view the forest 100 feet above the forest floor. This festival would not be possible without the hundreds of wonderful motivated volunteers who work tirelessly to make this event enjoyable and memorable for you. To the City of Eureka and Its Staff: Redwood Coast Music Festival is 33 years old this year and we are producing our 31 st Annual Festival for all to enjoy — not just our local community, but also attendees from all over the country. We have seen many changes over the years, including our name, the length of the festival, and the different genres of music we continue to provide for your listening and dancing pleasure. We have also overcome many obstacles, like flooded venues, landslides, road closures and flight delays that left musicians stuck trying to get here. There have been behind the scenes technical issues and two years of COVID. Through all this, one thing has remained constant: The unwavering support we get from the City of Eureka and its amazing Staff! From elected officials, to clerical staff, to the employees working the venues; everyone is ready and willing to help us put on a great festival. Therefore the Redwood Coast Music Festival Board of Directors dedicate the 31 st Annual Redwood Coast Music Festival to the City of Eureka

Once a set is over, you may be asked to give up your seat to a Sponsor or Guild Member. DANCE FLOOR ETIQUETTE ~ • Young Children on the dance floor MUST be accompanied by an adult. For everyone’s safety, please limit children on the dance floor to sets before 7pm. • Faster and traveling dancers on the outside lane; slower dancers on the inside lane; swing & line dancers in the center. Ameripolitan Western Swing Award Winner Dave Stuckey joins up with Western Swing Hall of Fame musicians Elana James & Whit Smith (Hot Club of Cowtown) to lead a red hot 11 piece Western Swing All Star band. The Kings features the reunion of two of the finest Western Swing fiddle players in the world: Elana James and two-time Bob Wills National Fiddle Champion, James Mason. Joining the twin fiddles will be twin guitars featuring Whit Smith and Chris Wilkinson (Zazou Cowboys, Tropicali Flames, Sweet & Low Melody Co, Jive Aces). Based in New Orleans, Louisiana, Cleary has led his own group, the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, for over two decades but still collaborates frequently with his old friends. At the 2018 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, for instance, Cleary performed alongside Raitt in a heartfelt tribute to Fats Domino. As Cleary says, "Zanzibar to Havana, Shanghai to Tangier, I’ve hammered the keys in some funky places. I've slammed a full tilt Boogie for lifers at San Quentin prison, conjured old Storyville melodies for crowned heads of Europe in Royal suites and serenaded Mayan Indians on the shores of Lake Atitlan. Played the blues with BB King and once I even did the ’Tighten Up’ with Archie Bell and the Drells. NEW ORLEANS FUNK, BLUES, R&B Grammy Award winner JON CLEARY’S love and affinity for New Orleans music goes back to the rural British village of Cranbrook, Kent, where he was raised in a musical family. Cleary’s maternal grandparents performed in London in the 1940s, under the respective stage names Sweet Dolly Daydream and Frank Neville, The Little Fellow With The Educated Feet – she as a singer, and he as a crooner and tap dancer. As a teen Cleary grew increasingly interested in funk-infused music and discovered that three such songs that he particularly admired – LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade,” Robert Palmer’s version of “Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley,” and Frankie Miller’s rendition of “Brickyard Blues” – were attributed to Allen Toussaint as either the songwriter, the producer, or both. Cleary’s knowledge of Toussaint’s work expanded significantly when his uncle returned home to the U.K., after a two- year sojourn in New Orleans, with a copy of a Toussaint LP and two suitcases full of New Orleans R&B 45s. In 1981 Cleary flew to New Orleans for an initial pilgrimage and took a cab straight from the airport to the Maple Leaf Bar, a storied venue which then featured such great blues-rooted eclectic pianists as Roosevelt Sykes and James Booker. Cleary first worked at the Maple Leaf as a painter, but soon graduated to playing piano there – even though his first instrument was the guitar, which he still plays and has recently reintroduced into his live performances. As word of Cleary’s burgeoning talent began to spread around town, he was hired by such New Orleans R&B legends as Snooks Eaglin, Earl “Trick Bag” King, Johnny Adams, and Jessie “Ooh Poo Pah Doo” Hill, while also gaining the respect of the great Crescent City pianists Dr. John and the late Allen Toussaint. Years later, in 2012, Cleary recorded a critically acclaimed album of

all-Toussaint songs entitled Occapella . Today, Cleary’s work pays obvious homage to the classic Crescent City keyboard repertoire created by such icons as Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Dr. John, and James Booker – while also using it as a launching pad for a style that incorporates such other diverse influences as ’70s soul and R&B, gospel music, funk, Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Cuban rhythms, and much more. Deciding to stay in New Orleans, Cleary recorded his first album of nine, to date, in 1989. His ever-elevating profile led to global touring work in the bands of Taj Mahal, John Scofield, Dr. John, and Bonnie Raitt. Cleary has led his own group, the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, for over two decades now, and he still collaborates frequently with these old friends. At the 2018 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, for instance, Cleary performed alongside Raitt in a heartfelt tribute to Fats Domino. "Zanzibar to Havana, Shanghai to Tangier, I’ve hammered the keys in some funky places. I've slammed a full tilt boogie for lifers at San Quentin prison, conjured old Storyville melodies for crowned heads of Europe in royal suites and serenaded Mayan Indians on the shores of Lake Atitlan. Played the blues with BB King and once I even did the ’Tighten Up’ with Archie Bell and the Drells. Whether it's a song, a style, an idiom or an image, DUKE ROBILLARD will render it with mastery, power, nuance and an unerring grasp of its essence. Duke's resume is decorated with Grammy nominations, Handy Awards and Blues Music Awards, and other honors for his artistry, recordings and productions within the United States and internationally. Robillard is a true legend in the American blues and jump swing world. He formed the jump swing band Roomful of Blues in 1967 when he was 19. He led the band for over a decade, recording several albums and touring the country. By the time Duke left Roomful after a dozen years, he was firmly established in the upper echelon of contemporary blues guitarists. Duke went from Roomful to a stint with rockabilly revivalist Robert Gordon and then to the first iteration of the Legendary Blues Band, composed primarily of then-recent Muddy Waters sidemen. On his own since 1977, Duke continues to lead bands and record albums, all of which have been based on jump blues, swing, and blues music. The Duke Robillard Band debuted in 1981, re-emerging as The Pleasure Kings with their eponymous 1984 album on Rounder. It and its sequel, Too Hot To Handle , burnished Duke's songwriting portfolio; the 1987 jazz outing Swing (with saxophonist Scott Hamilton) underscored his versatility and remains a highlight. Continuing his solo career, Duke replaced

Jimmie Vaughan with The Fabulous Thunderbirds in 1990. He cut his own much-awaited straight blues album Duke's Blues in 1993 for Canadian imprint Stony Plain, leading to a continuing and prolific alliance, along with releases during the ensuing years on Point Blank/ Virgin and Shanachie, as well as instructional videos. His unsurpassed mastery of the guitar style of T-Bone Walker (later crystallized memorably in his 2004 release Blue Mood ) was deservedly heralded, but his breadth was also head-turning: from swing, standards and ballads to rockers, gutbucket Chicago blues and rockabilly. Duke has also launched his own labels with Jesse Finkelstein, Blue Duchess/Shining Stone. Duke has produced albums by Billy Boy Arnold, Joe Louis Walker, Jimmy Witherspoon and Jay McShann, Billy Price and Otis Clay, and Sunny Crownover, as well as recording two collaborations with Herb Ellis, and a pairing with his successor in Roomful - Ronnie Earl. Some of Robillard's studio credits include Bob Dylan's highly acclaimed 1997 Time Out Of Mind , Ruth Brown, Pinetop Perkins, Snooky Pryor, Al Copley, Todd Sharpville and Tony Z. MICHAEL DOUC É T, fiddler, composer, and bandleader, is perhaps the single most important figure in the revitalization of Cajun music in the United States. A Louisiana native, Doucét is widely regarded as the world’s best Cajun fiddler and leads the globetrotting band BeauSoleil, featured in documentary films and movies such as Belizaire the Cajun and The Big Easy . He's a two-time Grammy Award Winner and eleven-time Grammy Award nominee. Since the mid-'70s, Doucét has been one of the dominant figures of the Cajun music revival, respected for his scholarship and admired for his showmanship. On the one hand, Doucét dredges up ancient Cajun tunes with medieval French roots, and on the other, plays flamboyant fiddle with Beausoleil. Aside from Beausoleil, singer and fiddler Doucét has performed and recorded with the more purely traditional Savoy- Doucét Cajun Band. He is as passionate about Cajun

he was influenced by rock music, although Cajun music was ever-present. Doucét played in folk-rock bands with his cousin, Zachary Richard, at the age of twelve, then joined a Cajun rock group. In 1974, he and Richard visited France and after his return to the U.S., he learned violin, which quickly became his principal instrument. Additionally, he plays guitar as well as mandolin and accordion, and also sings. Deeply influenced by older musicians such as Amédé Ardoin and especially Dennis McGee (who became a friend), Doucét and a group of like-minded friends formed a band in 1975, naming it Coteau. He also formed Beausoleil with Kenneth and Sterling Richard in 1977. With Beausoleil, Doucét blended elements of traditional Cajun music with zydeco, adding hints of jazz, blues, and country. In 2005, Doucét and Beausoleil received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts, and in 2007 they were awarded a United States Artists Grant. The band has been nominated many times for Grammy awards, and won for Best Traditional Folk Album with 1997's L'Amour Ou La Folie . Among many pieces Doucét has composed for his band are Chanson D’Acadie, Bunk's Blues, Conja,Newz Reel, Quelle Belle Vie, L'Ouragon, and Freeman’s Zydeco, the latter in collaboration with Fremont Fontenot. Doucét has performed frequently in concert and on record in a trio, the Savoy-Doucét Cajun Band, with Marc and Ann Savoy. He has also worked with Bruce Molsky, Darol Anger, and Rushad Eggleston as Fiddlers 4, and has recorded several solo albums. Since 1997, Doucét has been involved in education and has been adjunct professor at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette.

His international performing music career spans 40 years and includes multiple Grammy Awards, platinum and gold records. He has recorded and performed with a star-studded array of musicians including B.B. King, Etta James, John Lee Hooker, Robert Cray, Boz Skaggs, Syl Johnson and Van Morrison. He created Little Village Foundation in 2014 to share the diverse music that has always inspired him and to help other artists, especially musicians no one would learn about without Little Village Foundation’s support. Little Village represents the way Jim has lived since he was a teenager. It combines everything he loves – music, diversity and helping people. Jim says that his real talent isn’t in musical virtuosity, but in being able to feel and reflect the emotional commonality between different kinds of music. When he was in his early 20s, he played on the TV show American Bandstand and flew home that day to play at an organ bar in Oakland. Pugh says, "I made no distinction between the two. Along the way, he has crafted his own trademark harmonica sound - a subtle combination of tone, phrasing and attack combined with a strong sense of swing. Mark has been with Electro Fi Records since 2000, releasing five CDs. Thanks to Mark's earlier albums, constant touring and appearances at the major blues festivals, he's firmly established his solid reputation around the US and Europe. Born in New Haven, CT but raised in Los Angeles until he graduated high school, Mark moved to Berkeley at age 18 to pursue a career in blues music, where he felt the music was taken more seriously. Mark started the Blues Survivors in 1977 with Mississippi Johnny Waters. By 1984 Hummel began a life of non- stop touring of the US, Canada and overseas, which he still continues at least 130-150 days out of each year. Hummel has toured or recorded with blues legends Charles Brown, Charlie Musselwhite, Lowell Fulson, Billy Boy Arnold, Carey Bell, Lazy Lester, Brownie McGhee, Eddie Taylor, Luther Tucker and Jimmy Rogers. Mark Hummel’s Blues Harmonica Blowout™ started on a Sunday night in 1991 at Ashkenaz in Berkeley with four harmonica players - Rick Estrin, Mark, Dave Earl and Doug Jay. Each player performed a twenty to thirty minute set and everyone jammed together with Hummel’s Blues Survivors as backup. Over the next five years it grew to become a multi-venue event around
