FARMERS FACE HIGH PROPERTY TAX THREAT

Farmers in Prescott-Russell and other parts of Ontario fear that skyrocketing estimates on the value of their land could mean skyrocketing property tax bills next year. The United Counties of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR) met, during its June 13 committee of the whole session, with a delegation of local farmers representing the regional branch of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA). Their spokesman, Ben Le Fort, an OFA senior policy researcher, said farmers in Prescott-Russell face “a quite substantial” financial penalty because the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) has determined that farmland in the region has increased in overall value by 84 per cent. “Farmers are starting to feel the effects now,” Le Fort said, adding that by compari- son, MPAC estimated residential property values in Prescott-Russell increased overall by just nine per cent. The OFA wants the municipal and counties councils to consider special adjustments to their farm property tax ratio when calculating next year’s budgets, to avoid a major shift of the property tax levy onto Prescott-Russell’s agriculture sector. This would be part of an overall strategy that the OFA is pursuing with other municipali- ties. The OFA is also lobbying the provincial government through regional government
