Council candidates list grows in Russell
papers. Councillors Éric Bazinet and Craig Cullen are not running for re-election. Bazinet is stepping down after his first term though he expects to remain active in local politics. Cullen resigned his seat last month to take on the position as the town- ship’s new public works and environmental services director. Also posted on the list at the municipal office of confirmed candidates for council- lor seats in Russell Township now are Doug Anthony, André D. Brisson, andWilliam Gor- don Brown.

EMBRUN | Incumbent councillor Jamie Laurin still has plans to run for re-election. He just needs to review some matters first before filing his papers. “My intention is to run,” Coun. Laurin said March 3. Both Mayor Jean-Paul St-Pierre and Coun. Pierre Leroux have filed their nomination
Council considers empty seat options
“I don’t support a by-election during an election year,” said Laurin. Council approved a resolution declaring the seat of former-councillor Craig Cullen as vacant. Cullen resigned his seat last month to take on the position as the township’s new director for public works and environ- mental services. Now council must decide how to fill the vacancy until the October municipal elec- tion. Holding a by-election is one of five op- tions possible and also the most expensive because of the cost to set up and staff poll- ing stations. The other four less-expensive options all involve some form of appointment. The sole cost might be as little as the time for municipal staff to compile a list of possible candidates for council to review before choosing. Council will review and choose from all the options available during its mid-March regular session.

EMBRUN | It is now official. There is at least one empty seat on Russell Township coun- cil and the question is how to fill it until the autumn election rolls around. Coun. Jamie Laurin voiced the general view of the rest of council during the March 3 regular session. All agree on the need to avoid wasting taxpayer money.
