LOOKING FOR A FITNESS VACATION? 6 BENEFITS OF WHITE WATER RAFTING

1. Provides an adrenaline rush Whitewater rafting guarantees a release of adrenaline. Adrenaline rushes allow rafters to focus only on the excitement they feel rather than the physical exercise of rafting. 2. Reduces stress Rafting provides you an escape from reality. The quietness of nature lets you relax and leave all your worries behind you, especially when the river is slow-moving. In this moment, you can bask in this moment of peace. And yet, when the river gets going again, you can be sure to exude your stress through the exercise required in heavy paddling! 3. Strengthens muscles White water rafting is a fun, challenging physical activity. Using your upper body, you paddle quickly and vigorously through the river. The movement of paddling tones your arms, back, and shoulders, and as the current of the river grows more swift and water resistance increases, so too does your muscle strength improve as you continue to fight the challenge of the river.

modern distractions such as work or technology, families can finally have the time to engage in conversation while overcoming a challenge. 6. Boosts self-esteem White water rafting leaves you with a feeling of accomplishment and an increased sense of confidence. PATIENT OF THE MONTH

MEET MELISSA BROWN!

Introducing our first patient of the month, Melissa Brown! Melissa first came to Orthopedic and Balance Therapy Specialists for physical therapy 10 years ago for back pain! She has been a committed patient with us from the start and throughout her multiple back surgeries. “My experience has always been pleasant and I feel that everyone does what they can to help me.” After finishing physical therapy post op from her first back surgery, Melissa felt her range of motion increase greatly. Her doctors to this day are still impressed with the range of motion she regained after surgery. Melissa was in a lot of pain dealing with her back issues. Melissa received laser therapy combined with physical therapy to treat the nerve pain she was experiencing. She saw remarkable results! She used a cane and was

not able to walk more than a block without the pain in her legs. At times, the pain limited Melissa from playing with her grandkids. Her therapy is working very well for her and now she only uses the cane for stability. She is looking forward to pain free days with her family! Melissa explained that she enjoys her exercises and the one on one time she receives in the balance machine. “The gym PTA’s and Tech’s do an excellent job in the gym helping.” Melissa has chosen Lupus Foundation of America as her charity. She has firsthand experiences with Lupus affecting her joints, which has pushed her to continuing with physical therapy. We are excited to donate $100 to Lupus Foundation of America in her name!

WHY DO WE CALL’EM “THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER”?

Sirius is so bright that the ancient Romans thought it radiated extra heat toward Earth. During the summer, when Sirius rises and sets with the Sun, they thought Sirius added heat to the Sun’s heat to cause hotter summer temperatures. For the ancient Romans, the dog days of summer occurred from about July 24 to around August 24. Over time, though, the constellations have drifted somewhat. Today, The Old Farmer’s Almanac lists the traditional timing of the dog days of summer as being July 3 until August 11. Although the dog days of summer are usually the hottest, they don’t have anything to do with either dogs or the star Sirius. Instead, the tilt of the Earth explains why these days tend to be the summer’s hottest.

Many people believe the phrase “dog days of summer” stems from the fact that dogs tend to be a bit on the lazy side during the hottest days of summer. Of course, who can blame them? With that much fur, dogs that exercise during the hot days of summer can overheat easily. However, the phrase doesn’t stem from lazy dogs lying around on hot and humid days. Instead, to find the answer, we only need to look to the summer sky. The ancient Romans called the hottest, most humid days of summer “diēs caniculārēs” or “dog days.”The name came about because they associated the hottest days of summer with the star Sirius. Sirius was known as the “Dog Star” because it was the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (Large Dog). Sirius also happens to be the brightest star in the night sky.

During summer in the Northern Hemisphere, the tilt of the Earth causes Sun’s light to hit the Northern Hemisphere at a more direct angle, and for a longer period of time throughout the day. This means longer, hotter days during the summer. This explains why the dog days of summer are from late January to early March in the Southern Hemisphere. The actual dates of the dog days of summer will vary by location, depending upon latitude and climate.

Now, this is real magic!

Dear Friend, You may have been led to believe that you can find real health in a medicine bottle or simply by giving the nice pharmacist your prescription… But unfortunately this just isn’t true! Real health comes from the inside! It’s about what you do for yourself in the way of eating well, getting enough rest, taking a little exercise, drinking a bit more water… all simple steps which are easy to do. Just like regular physical therapy treatments… Having your spine, your joints, muscles and nervous system working at their best is essential for good health, longevity and vitality – after all there is no point reaching a ripe old age if you’re not fit enough to enjoy it! “If I’d known I was gonna live this long, I’d have taken better care of myself!” Instead of reaching retirement when they should be enjoying themselves and doing the things they want to such as gardening, playing golf or playing with the grandchildren – we find a lot of our previous patients return to us in pain. They are aching with every movement having desperately tried to mask their symptoms with more and more tablets! Don’t let that be you… there is no magic bullet… Don’t think the anti-inflammatories, the pain-killers, the muscle relaxants will actually fix your problem… that’s just an illusion… it’s medical trickery!

Study after study shows that regular care can detect and correct little problems before they become serious – helping you stay active and able to enjoy life to the fullest. If you haven’t had any treatment, real treatment, for a while you may be missing out! Call us today to make an appointment and let us examine you and correct what we find. That’s all you need to do to start the transformation back to real health… and that’s where the real magic begins!

Sincerely,

Arlan Alburo Orthopedic and Balance Therapy Specialists PS- Did you know that as of July 1, 2013, you may now see your physical therapist and get started with treatment without having to get an order from your physician?
