ANDREW RAMSDEN (1934-2013)

The Andrew Ramsden run over 2800m at Flemington originates from a race that had its inaugural running back in 1964. Originally known as the Duke of Norfolk Stakes, and run over two miles (3218m), the race was long considered the premier long-distance

race of the Autumn program. Back then it was named following a visit to Flemington by the 16th Duke of Norfolk, Bernard Fitzalan-Howard, a keen racing enthusiast. In 2005, the race took on a new name, this time the VRC did so to honour former VRC Chairman and Racing industry stalwart, Andrew Ramsden. Ramsden was a Victoria Racing Club committee and board member for twenty years and Chairman from 1998 to 2003. He made an enormous contribution at Flemington, as well as the broader racing industry and as an administrator was pivotal to the structural change in Victoria, which led to the formation of Racing Victoria Limited (RVL). Following retirement from the VRC board in 2004, he took up the reins as Chairman of the Australian Racing Board. Andrew Ramsden was known as a man with an absolute passion for thoroughbred racing, particularly staying races. As an owner he had great success with shares in numerous stars of the turf including Melbourne Cup winners Gurner’s Lane (1982) and Brew (2000). Melbourne Cups aside, perhaps the ultimate thrill is winning a time- honoured distance race renamed in your honour? Andrew Ramsden is remembered as a man of great integrity who had an unwavering commitment to the betterment of racing. Did you know? AN EXPRESS PASS TO THE CUP

‘ The race that stops a nation’™, the $8 million Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m), may be almost six months away but the Road To The Cup begins in May at Flemington with the awarding of the first Golden Ticket for 2022, given to the winner of the Lexus Andrew Ramsden (2800m). With a $300,000 cheque and an express pass into the Lexus Melbourne Cup to be awarded to the winner, it is one of racing’s most prestigious prizes, the ultimate dream for every racehorse owner. A Golden Ticket means that, as long as the horse is entered for the Lexus Melbourne Cup throughout the spring, they will be automatically guaranteed one of the 24 places on offer for Australia’s greatest race. While the connections of other horses are left trying to figure out a way to get into the Lexus Melbourne Cup later in the year, those with Golden Tickets can instead focus on presenting their horse in the best possible condition for what will be the race of their life. Golden Tickets are awarded to the winners of three Flemington features – the Lexus Andrew Ramsden in May, the Lexus Bart Cummings (2500m) in October and the Lexus Hotham Stakes (2500m) on Penfolds Victoria Derby Day – as well as to the winners of theCaulfieldCup (2400m) and theCoxPlate (2040m) in the weeks leading into the first Tuesday in November. House and Caulfield Cup hero Incentivise – lined up in the Lexus Melbourne Cup, while 2020 saw eventual Lexus Melbourne Cup heroine Verry Elleegant secure a berth with her win in the Caulfield Cup. From 1964 to 2018, the race – which was known as the Duke Of Norfolk Stakes until 2004 when it was renamed for former Victoria Racing Club chairman and Melbourne Cup-winning owner Andrew Ramsden – was contested over 3200m. It was the only race besides the Lexus Melbourne Cup to be run over the Flemington two miles each year. While the Duke Of Norfolk Stakes and the Lexus Melbourne Cup were run over the same distance, only one horse completed the double – the Lloyd Williams-owned What A Nuisance, who won the Duke Of Norfolk in 1984 before returning in 1985 to claim the nation’s biggest prize. He would be the first of six Lexus Melbourne Cup winners to carry the famous Williams navy and blue, joined eventually by Efficient, Green Moon, Almandin, Rekindling and Twilight Payment, while Williams also owned Just A Dash. THE GOLDEN TICKET

Another notable winner came in 2011 when Niwot – part-owned by Andrew Ramsden – scored a memorable victory. He would go on to finish second in The Bart Cummings and win the Hotham Stakes before finishing a respectable eighth to Dunaden in the Melbourne Cup. In 2019, though, the Lexus Andrew Ramsden changed slightly, being reduced in distance to 2800m and also switching to a set weights event open to horses aged three, four and five. Lexus Melbourne Cup ballot exemption was also on the line for the first time, offering the winner a ticket into Australia’s premier contest. An enthralling stretch-long battle between Irish import Steel Prince and Adelaide Cup winner Surprise Baby saw the former secure his spot in the Lexus Melbourne Cup by a nose. Surprise Baby would later grab his own Golden Ticket by winning The Bart Cummings at Flemington, with Steel Prince finishing ninth and Surprise Baby fifth come the first Tuesday in November. A year later, an Adelaide Cup winner – King Of Leogrance – would again finish second as the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Oceanex relished her first attempt at the extended trip. She would go on to finish 11th in the Lexus Melbourne Cup, earning her connections a share of prizemoney. The 2021 winner Realm Of Flowers produced arguably the most impressive Andrew Ramsden win of them all, scorching clear for a five-length victory and stamping herself as a true Lexus Melbourne Cup contender in the process. Unfortunately, minor injury ruled her out of ‘the race that stops a nation’™, with those who finished in the placings behind her – subsequent The Bart Cummings winner Grand Promenade and 2019 Kennedy Oaks heroine Miami Bound – finishing sixth and 12th respectively in the Lexus Melbourne Cup. The Lexus Andrew Ramsden has proven, in such a short timeframe, to be the ideal stepping stone to the Lexus Melbourne Cup. Make sure to remember the name of the 2022 winner – they are certain to be a force come November 1.

HARRY WHITE

In the 1960s, 70s and 80s, jockey Harry White would become revered for his handling of sprinters. He had a reputation as a brilliant rider of wayward horses. His hands, especially in the closing stages, were one of his great weapons – the whip sparingly used and as a last resort. A JOCKEY WITH TRUE HEART AND GENTLE HANDS BY PATRICK BARTLEY

White won the Duke of Norfolk Stakes an incredible five times. The race is now known as the Andrew Ramsden.

He is a four-time Melbourne Cup-winning jockey. Three of those were trained by Bart Cummings, who also trained the quintet of Duke of Norfolk Stakes winners. White, loved by all in racing, had to overcome adversity and indiscretion in his youth before being afforded the opportunity to showcase his sublime skillset on horseback. Son of a Caulfield Cup-winning jockey but raised by his grandparents, White was in his early teens when he began riding track work. His apprenticeship was over almost as quickly as it began, an act of vandalism leading to his indentures being revoked. Almost a year had passed when a plea for a second chance was granted. A relationship with a ‘nice’ girl put White back on the rails – Harry and Lauris married and remained devoted to each other until her passing. White was loved by all in racing across Australia and overseas. He started his career at 13 and steadily made his way through the apprentice ranks and then was noticed by arguably Australia’s greatest horse trainer, Bart Cummings who had moved from South Australia to Victoria at the same time that White became prominent.

Cummings’ son Anthony was stable foreman for his illustrious father during the White-Cummings period and believes they made a formidable combination. Cummings saw in White everything that he wanted his jockeys to do, and within months White was riding track work at Flemington for the master trainer. “You know, when I look back, Dad and Harry never, ever had a cross word and that’s saying something, because Dad was a cranky old bugger who always wanted it done his way and the jockeys either fitted in or went elsewhere,” said Anthony Cummings. “Dad always insisted on his horses going 15 seconds to the furlong during track work, and in just one morning Harry had got his head round what Dad wanted. It seemed Harry had been with Dad all his life,” Cummings said. White was also brilliantly equipped to handle not only bad horses but speed horses. It was said that White could conquer any bad-mouthed horse and his coaxing ability in the closing stages was an artform. Punters who regularly backed White said that they would look in horror if White had to use the whip, as it was then a last resort. “It seemed Harry didn’t have any problems with whatever horse Dad legged himon. He didn’t have to teach Harry patience, Harry came with that asset the moment he arrived at headquarters. “But it was his lovely nature that we all were amazed at. We had to wake him up before the Melbourne Cup that he won on Hyperno as he’d fallen asleep half an hour before the race. “But that’s what Dad liked – a jockey that didn’t get all upset because he knew that that would translate to the horse. Harry never got upset. He was a great loser and a very humble winner. “When you talk about Hyperno you talk about a special skillset. He [the horse] could do lots and lots of things wrong. We tried everything with him and finally got him back enjoying racing. The placing of Harry on his back was the cherry on the cake,” he said.

In the late nineties after retiring from the saddleWhite confessed that he’d carried a secret that he only revealed on retirement.

“I can tell you this, I had a fall at Caulfield one day, it could have been on Cup Day actually and I lost the sight in my left eye.

“So I went to the surgeon and said this must remain our secret and I managed to get through my career with the use of just one eye,” White revealed in 1996. Sadly in 2003, the same year he was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame, White was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. But without any fanfare, the jockey’s trademark relaxed approach applied to his illness. He quietly worked away and is still not letting the terrible illness overwhelm him.

And nearly all racing lovers around the world who knew and enjoyed his company and his skill are certainly in his corner.

SANTA HONOURED IN SPRINT SERIES RENAME BY PATRICK BARTLEY

For decades now the Ramsden family have been a successful entity in horse racing in some of the state’s most important races. Five-time Group 1 winner Santa Ana Lane gave them many reasons to celebrate in an illustrious career. The late Andrew Ramsden, a former chairman of the VRC, gathered together a group of friends from the well-known city venue The Australian Club in the late 1970s to form what turned out to be a highly successful investment. All named after streets that surrounded the club, the horses that they purchased included Melbourne Cup winner Gurner’s Lane, and outstanding stayer Paris Lane. It seemed that the Ramsden family were content to race Melbourne Cup winners and Caulfield Cup winners. However, one horse emerged that debunked the staying theory. Ramsden’s sonMichael and current VRCvice-chairman, speaking from New York where he is on a business tour, explained that Santa Ana Lane proved to be a very different racehorse than all of the stayers that had carried the Ramsden colours in the past. “Normally we look for stayers, but have broadened it to good types. “He (Santa Ana Lane) was supposed to be a stayer and his breeding suggested around 2000 metres would be his ideal distance. “We tried him over a mile but I guess he didn’t read his breeding page,” Ramsden said. However, Santa Ana Lane did something right, and his career managed to collect $8,236,336 in prize winnings. Now Ramsden is very glad that he bought the Lope De Vega colt who is out of a good race mare First Fleet.

“Lope De Vega was a Spanish poet who was in the Spanish Armada and Santa Ana was the name of one of their boats. “We always have Lane in the name, that’s been part and parcel of our syndicates. For this horse we’ve got to thank Justin Bahen who paid $80,000 for Santa Ana Lane at the Victorian sales,” he said. In honour of Santa Ana Lane and his five-time Group 1 winning record that included the VRC Sprint Classic, the Club has unanimously voted to rename the all Victorian sprint series to the Santa Ana Lane Sprint Series as part of the winter racing championship, of which other heats will be run on the day. Co-trainer Sam Freedman said that Santa Ana Lane was a joy for he and his father to train and believes his record underlines the versatility that Santa Ana Lane possessed. The sprinter won Group 1 races in Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland. Freedman believes that Santa Ana Lane’s success, who raced into prominence by winning the Wagga Town Plate in 2018, was because of the horse’s slow start to racing. “I don‘t think a lot of people rated him highly at first because he was a horse that didn’t race in his two- and three-year-old days

very much because of nagging, niggling problems that he just struggled to overcome. “But when he did, he got stronger and better. His first real glimpse of true ability probably surfaced at Wagga in the Town Plate which is one of the toughest sprint races in country New South Wales. “But once he hit his straps, he was able to win Group 1 races across the nation,” Freedman said. After four years of brilliant racing, Santa Ana Lane is now retired and relaxing and residing at Living Legends where he brings much joy to visitors. And for Michael Ramsden and his friends, it seems that success on the sprinting side of racing is just as good as owning a stayer, considering eight Group 1 wins is hard to get out of any horse. Head down to the Horse Stalls to visit Santa Ana Lane and 2016 Melbourne Cup winner Almandin. They will also be parading in the Mounting Yard after races 2 and 4.

was bought by Cummings in 1972 at the Adelaide Yearling Sales for$18,000 (top price) and then sold to prominent owner Victor Peters, neither could envisage the heights to which Taj Rossi would rise in his short but spectacular career. Beginning his racing as a two-year-old in Adelaide, his first two wins came in moderate company in the winter of 1973 at Flemington. In the spring he ran second at Moonee Valley. Then followed a dazzling sequence in which he won six of his next seven starts including the Ascot Vale Stakes, Moonee Valley Stakes, W.S. Cox Plate, Victoria Derby, George Adams Hcp and Sandown Guineas. Said Bart Cummings: “All along I have said that he is one of the best, if not the best, three-year-old that Australia has known in the last 50 years”. This magnificent group of victories secured for Taj Rossi the award of Racehorse of the Year for the 1973-74 season. Cummings had great respect for Taj Rossi, who was retired to stud as a four-year-old, siring among others, Taj Eclipse, the winner of the 1983 VRC Oaks and yes, owned by Mr and Mrs Victor Peters. BANJO PATERSON SERIES This series is for open stayers and is named in honour of revered author and poet Andrew Barton ‘Banjo’ Paterson, who had a lifelong love affair with horses. Polo matches, picnic races and riding his own pony were all part of his early life in country NSW. After moving to Sydney and qualifying as a solicitor, he began submitting poetry to The Bulletin under the pseudonym “The Banjo”, the name of a racehorse his father had owned. His various careers included jockey, horse trainer in the Middle East during WWI and racing journal editor, but it’s his wonderful bush ballads and poems – such as The Man From Snowy River – that truly reflect his equine passion. In 1886 he published A Dream of the Melbourne Cup; the first of many racing ballads, including Old Pardon, the Son of Reprieve, The Open Steeplechase, Rio Grande’s Last Race and The Wargilah Handicap.

LEILANI SERIES This series for mares is named for Leilani, another Bart Cummings-trained champion who left an indelible print on Australian racing. Leilani won the 1974 AJC Oaks as a three-year-old before transforming into a dominant four-year-old race mare, winning the Turnbull Stakes, Toorak Handicap, Caulfield Cup and Mackinnon Stakes in the spring of 1974, before running a gallant second to stablemate Think Big in the Melbourne Cup. In the ensuing autumn, Leilani won the Orr Stakes, St George Stakes and Australian Cup, among other races. Winning 14 of her 28 starts, Leilani was a horse that Cummings was very fond of; so much so that he named his Sydney stables Leilani Lodge in her honour. Although Cummings was not one to talk much about his horses - especially those in the past as he preferred to look forward - it is well-known that he had huge respect for Leilani, known as a great horse with great fight. Leilani was raced by prominent Melburnians, The Hon Andrew and Mrs Susan Peacock as well as Mr Ian and Mrs Liz Rice. SILVER BOWL SERIES This series is for three-year-old milers with heats over distances of 1300m-1600m held across Melbourne at Flemington, Caulfield and Sandown. The final is a $150,000 quality handicap over 1600m on Flemington Finals Day. RIVETTE SERIES This series is aimed at three-year-old fillies over the 1200m-1400m distance and takes in heats across metropolitan and country venues. It is named in honour of Rivette, who as a six-year-old mare owned and trained by Harry Bamber at Mentone, emerged from obscurity in the spring of 1939 to become the first of her gender to capture the coveted Caulfield- Melbourne Cup double. By the time the great race started, Rivette was into 5-1 favouritism in a field of 26 horses. She won by a half-length in a time of

3:27.0 and earned £7,200 for connections. It is said that Rivette changed the fortunes, and life, of Harry Bamber, for whom times were tough before the winning mare came along. Bamber owned, trained and bred Rivette, a rare feat in Melbourne Cup history. THE MAHOGANY CHALLENGE Introduced in 2019, The Mahogany Challenge was created to showcase developing stayers in Victoria. The series is for three-year-olds only and takes in heats at Flemington, Caulfield and Sandown, before culminating in the final on Flemington Finals Day. The series is named after Mahogany, who was raced jointly by Hall of Fame owner Lloyd Williams and businessman Kerry Packer, and trained by the all-conquering Lee Freedman. He won eight Group 1 races, including both the Victoria Derby and Australian Derby as a three-year-old, and was named the Australian Racehorse of the Year for the 1993-94 season. Known as one of the most versatile gallopers in Australian racing history, Mahogany won half of his eight Group 1s at Flemington, including the Lightning Stakes in 1995 and 1997. NEXT GENERATION SPRINTER SERIES This series for two-year-olds was introduced to showcase young up-and-coming sprinters and provide an opportunity to gain valuable experience up the unique Flemington straight. The intention is to contribute to the development of the next generation of Australia’s world-class sprinting talents. The series takes in heats at Flemington, Caulfield, Sandown and Mornington, and the $150,000 final is held over the famous Flemington Straight Six course.

WINTER SERIES HEATS UP AT FLEMINGTON

The Lexus Andrew Ramsden is not the only race today to offer a golden ticket into a future feature with six of the nine races serving as heats for Flemington Finals Day on July 2, the culmination of the Flemington Winter Series that is renowned for producing subsequent stars. The winter is often seen as Australian racing’s off-season, a time when the best horses are spelling or in the early stages of their preparations for the spring. However, it is the winter which perhaps serves as important a function as any season in the country’s year-round racing program, offering an opportunity for horses to work through the grades in a fashion that allows them to thrive once they meet the biggest and the best come the spring. While the Melbourne Cup Carnival in the spring may be the star attraction of the racing programme at Headquarters with the Flemington Racing Spectacular its impressive autumn counterpart, it has been the winter which has proven a reliable stepping stone to success in some of Australia’s biggest contests. With nine series on offer, catering to every type of horse - from sprinters to stayers, from two-year-olds to veterans – the Flemington Winter Series is filled with competitive racing, emerging talents and impressive depth. Over the next twomonths, designated races – both at Flemington and at metropolitan and country meetings right across Victoria – will offer a pathway towards Flemington Finals Day in July. Each of the nine series has a number of heats, with the winner and runner-up in each heat automatically receiving a berth in the respective final.

Today at Flemington will feature the first heat of the VRC-CRV Winter Championship Series for milers, the Leilani Series for mares, the Silver Bowl Series for three-year-old milers and the Next Generation Sprinters Series for two-year-olds. The meeting will also feature the second heats of the Mahogany Challenge Series for staying three-year-olds, named for versatile Flemington favourite Mahogany, and the Santa Ana Lane Sprint Series, which is being dedicated for the first time to superstar Flemington-trained sprinter Santa Ana Lane. The first heats were held at Caulfield last Saturday with the classy Elzamee and progressive The Amazonian earning ballot- exempt spots in the Mahogany Challenge Final (2500m), while improving four-year-olds Ranting and Ocean Beyond received their express pass into the Listed Santa Ana Lane Sprint Series Final (1200m). Last weekend also saw the first heat of the Banjo Paterson Series for older stayers with stakes winners Milford and Flash Aah earning a place in the 2600-metre final. Recent years have seen Group 1 winners like Nature Strip, Santa Ana Lane, Eduardo, Gytrash, Zoutori, I’m Thunderstruck, Streets Of Avalon, Despatch, Miami Bound, Begood Toya Mother and Johnny Get Angry emerge from the Flemington Winter Series, with Nature Strip going on to be named Australian Horse of the Year. Meanwhile, the last three winners of the Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2500m) – Surprise Baby, Persan and Grand Promenade – have either run in The Lexus Andrew Ramsden or the Flemington Winter Series before going on to take their place in the Lexus Melbourne Cup.
