ASSOCIATION NEWS

THE ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION (ECA) SPEAKS TO IRELAND’S ELECTRICAL MAGAZINE ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF USING THIRD-PARTY ACCREDITED CONTROL CABLES, AND THE PROBLEMS WITH DUBIOUS CONTROL CABLE QUALITY…

A new certification scheme for control cables

C ontrol cables are versatile settings. They serve as flexible interconnections, facilitating the

YY, SY and CY derive from CENELEC naming conventions, where ‘Y’ represents unscreened, ‘S’ signifies steel wire braid, and ‘C’ indicates copper braid. The second character, ‘Y,’ often designates PVC sheathing, but low-smoke variants are also available. SY control cables are sometimes referred to as flexible, braided, flex or instrumentation control cables. Control cable types vary to suit different environments and mechanical stress levels. YY cables, unscreened and flexible, are ideal for light mechanical stress conditions. SY cables feature a galvanised steel wire braid, making them suitable for medium-to-high mechanical stress installations. CY cables, screened and flexible, resemble YY cables but incorporate a tinned copper braid for protection against external electromagnetic interference. Both PVC and low-smoke emission versions are available depending on application requirements, with low- smoke cables being crucial for safety- critical environments. However, under the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671), YY, SY and CY control cables are not recommended for fixed installations. Using these cables in such scenarios requires careful consideration and

assessment to ensure safety standards are upheld. While some manufacturers claim compliance with BS EN 50525 series for flexible cables, differences in design can exist. For instance, SY cables cannot conform to BS EN 50525-2-11, a standard for PVC flexible cables without provisions for braided cables. Insulation and sheath thicknesses in YY, SY and CY cables may also differ from BS EN flexible cables, rendering it an inappropriate standard for these control cables. BASEC standard and certification BASEC, as a trusted authority in the cable industry, has introduced a certification scheme to enhance the quality and safety of control cable products. This scheme encompasses six BASEC specifications for both PVC and LSHF designs. It applies to cable products up to 300/500 V with a maximum conductor operating temperature of 70°C and references standards EN 50525-1 and EN 50565- 2 where applicable. BASEC’s rigorous certification, factory auditing, and testing procedures aim to improve the overall quality and safety of cable products, particularly in the underregulated control cable range. www.eca.co.uk

components widely employed across industrial and everyday

measurement, control, and regulation of equipment such as assembly lines and production systems. Additionally, control cables support the functionality of associated computer units and work processes. These cables bridge the gap when a direct connection to the controlled object isn’t feasible, occupying an intermediate position between communication and power cables. Currently, the absence of specific standards for control cables can be confusing for manufacturers, installers and users. In response, independent accredited certification body BASEC has initiated a certification scheme to promote consistent quality levels for control cable product ranges, catering to industry demands. This scheme covers YY, SY and CY control cables. YY, SY and CY control cables are some of the most commonly used cables for applications such as industrial automation, railway infrastructure and more, transmitting vital information about the location, status and operating condition of controlled components.

‘Electrician Plus’ concept launched by TESP

The Electrotechnical Skills Partnership (TESP) has introduced a new brand concept called “Electrician Plus.” This concept emphasises the essential role of qualified electricians in installing low-carbon and renewable technologies. To safely install technologies like solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, battery storage systems, and electric vehicle charging points (EVCP), a strong grasp of electrical scientific theory and principles, along with demonstrated occupational competence, is crucial. Qualified electricians possess the fundamental competence needed to advance their skills and receive training in these specific technologies. Once you have qualified as an electrician, all that is needed are top-up CPD and qualifications in specific new technologies, to enable safe, compliant and competent installations. Awarding bodies such as City & Guilds, EAL and BPEC have been leading the way in this area with their updated EVCP and solar qualifications, designed so that only electricians who meet the industry Level 3 standard can enrol on these courses, helping safeguard against non-qualified and under-qualified personnel undertaking renewable installations and the potential safety and fire risk this poses. More details at: www.electricalcareers.co.uk/electrician-plus

Dublin firm secures €26m for solar expansion

Dublin’s UrbanVolt, the Solar- as-a-Service market leader, has announced a €26m investment from leading European specialist growth investor, Verdane. This significant investment means the company has raised over €200 million in debt and equity to date, and it will further power UrbanVolt’s rapid solar energy expansion in the Irish, UK and European markets. UrbanVolt helps business customers make a cost-effective transition to clean energy with their unique ‘Solar-as-a-Service’ business model. UrbanVolt’s model involves financing, installing, and maintaining

solar panels for customers, enabling the customer to buy solar-generated electricity at 40% lower cost than

an electricity provider’s rates. To ensure long-term stability,

UrbanVolt locks in its rate for up to 30 years, safeguarding customers against volatile energy costs and guaranteeing a stable supply of electricity for decades to come. Kevin Maughan, co-founder and CEO of UrbanVolt, said, “Securing this €26 million funding from Verdane marks a pivotal moment for UrbanVolt as we set our sights on an ambitious

European expansion.” www.urbanvolt.com

The Irish government has approved amendments to the existing Non-Domestic Microgeneration Scheme, operated by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), to extend supports to a wider range of businesses and non-domestic applicants. This will be done through tiered grant supports for solar PV – for installation sizes greater than 6kWp up to 1,000kWp (1 MW) capacity. New funding ranges from €2,700 to €162,600 to support an even wider range of businesses to switch to solar. This will typically support 20-30% of the investment cost, reducing payback to as little as five years. The new Solar PV Scheme enhancements will boost business investment in renewable energy generation. The updated grants are as follows: Up to 6kWp will remain unchanged up to €2,400, with an additional: •€300/kWp for each extra kWp installed between 7kWp-20kWp •€200/kWp for each extra kWp installed between 21kWp-200kWp •€150/kWp for each extra kWp installed between 201kWp-1000kWp This would mean that installations up to 1MW could be eligible for a grant of up to €162,600. This grant is available to businesses, agricultural sector, public sector bodies, schools, community centres and non-profit societies. www.seai.ie Grants of up to €162,000 available for non-domestic Solar PV systems

No need for a fused spur? Installers can opt for a sleeker model.

ACCORDING TO TIMEGUARD, STRAIGHTFORWARD AND AFFORDABLE CONTROL OF ENERGY-GUZZLING APPLIANCES WILL GIVE PEOPLE THE CONFIDENCE TO SWITCH ON AND STAY WARM THIS WINTER… Keep nice and warm this winter!

T he Severe Weather Europe website has reported a rapidly growing El Niño anomaly for the coming winter with the UK likely to be generally colder and drier compared to previous winters, increasing the risk of snowfall. A lot of people will be watching their smart meter display anxiously and be more aware of their consumption. Yet there is no need for them to face the cold while worrying about leaving things switched on accidentally. Instead, you can offer them devices that reassure them that appliances are never left on longer than needed. The controls in the Timeguard BoostMaster range are inexpensive, uncomplicated, easy to install, and will have an immediate effect on users’ power consumption. What’s more, the price point of these devices also means they are inexpensive to stock, so you can simply have them on

the shelf ready for installers to pick up. There cannot be many jobs where they won’t have the opportunity to add boost functionality to one or more appliances. With Timeguard BoostMaster and SupplyMaster controls, people can turn up the heat without fear of losing control of the bills. Their BoostMaster will never forget to switch off again. There are options to suit everyone, from simple push-button countdown to sophisticated Wi-Fi control. All are simply wired into single gang back boxes – it couldn’t be easier for a professional installer. running expensively and unnecessarily. These new digital controls enable users to choose the ideal duration for an appliance to stay on. They can set the on- time at the push of a single button and can see immediately how long is left. It is also possible to add some extra boost or switch it off, if required. Options include models with neon light displays, with a choice of on-times from 15 minutes to four hours at the press of a button and, if desired, built-in fused spur protection. There are also models with digital displays giving precise control over on-times of two or four hours depending on the model and a minute- by-minute countdown. Precision control: on and off Where on/off control at specific times of the day (or night) is required, or users want control when away from home, the Timeguard SupplyMASTER FST Fused Spur Timer with fully programmable electronic time control fits the bill perfectly, neatly replacing a standard fused spur or plain single gang socket – which is probably already adjacent to the appliance installers want to control, so there is no extra wiring.

You can choose between 24-hour models or seven-day programming to cater for people’s different weekday and weekend lifestyle patterns. There is a Timeguard BoostMaster button as well for a little extra heat or power without having to override the programming. Wi-Fi? Yes, of course! No product range is complete without a Wi-Fi option, and the Timeguard SupplyMASTER is no exception. Timeguard has added a Wi-Fi-controlled version of the Fused Spur Timers (FST) and adopted the Tuya Smart app to make sure it works – and stays working easily for users for years to come. The Timeguard design and build quality coupled with global leader Tuya is a powerful combination. The FST Wi-Fi is the ultimate easy-install control package with a fused spur, precision timing, Wi-Fi control, and the option to add some ‘boost time’ via the app. Economy 7 – nice and simple! While programming electronic devices has become so much easier and

more intuitive over the years, it is still troublesome to some people. So, Timeguard also offers the option of an analogue ‘interface’ to electronic time control, with the added benefit of boost timing. The device is also interchangeable with old Economy 7 units, making it particularly popular with people who are concerned about managing power usage at peak times. Keep the essentials in mind Time control is always the foundation stone of energy-saving solutions, and ideas like these help you provide alternatives that will have an immediate impact on users’ consumption and their bills, backed by the Timeguard quality and service guarantee. Want to stock up and use these great devices to boost business? Contact Timeguard or visit www.timeguard.com If you cannot see what you are looking for here or want more general-purpose time control for commercial applications, check out Timeguard’s NTT range. They have invested in design upgrades and improved functionality for this range as well.

AM ELECTRICAL POWERS EBRINGTON HOTEL RENOVATION

CELEBRATING A LANDMARK ACHIEVEMENT: AM ELECTRICAL’S PIVOTAL ROLE IN THE £15.5M EBRINGTON HOTEL PROJECT...

A M Electrical successfully delivered its largest project to date, the electrical package for the £15.5m, four-star deluxe Ebrington Hotel renovation and new build project in Derry. The milestone project also marked the County Tyrone firm’s first hotel venture from the ground up. Ebrington Hotel is located on the site of a former naval base that first opened in 1841. Known as HMS Sea Eagle during WWII, it was an important part of the North Atlantic Command. The 29-acre site continued to operate as a military barracks until 2003.

The redevelopment project led by main contractor, McKelvey Construction, involved the restoration of the existing Listed buildings – including the iconic Clock Tower building – and the construction of two new building extensions to deliver a deluxe hotel accommodating 91 bedrooms with the potential to increase to 152-room capacity. Also provided was an exquisite function room, contemporary 140-seater restaurant, a range of bars and lounges and opulent spa facilities including a hydrotherapy pool. The unique and historic setting provided

some challenges, as Anthony Feeney, Director at AM Electrical explained, “The project required us to modify the electrical services within two existing Listed buildings and incorporate the two new building extensions. We were installing 21st century systems and technology into a 19th century building structure, so naturally, there were challenges, primarily because the building’s Listed status prevented any alterations or modifications.” The project scope covered several tasks, such as removing and modifying existing services, installing a steel containment

system, setting up new distribution circuits, lighting and emergency lighting. Additionally, it involved small power distribution/adaptation, power distribution to mechanical equipment, CCTV, fire alarm, access control, intruder alarm, structured cabling, television systems, disabled refuge intercom, lightning protection, and the commissioning, testing and verification of installations. Forward thinking “This project demanded a high level of initiative and timely pro-action to pre- empt and deal with issues as, or before, they arose to maintain the project’s successful momentum,” said Anthony. “There was a tight timeframe to deliver to, as the hotel had to open on a specific date to meet licensing requirements.” As with all contracts, clear, on-going communication between main contractor and client is paramount. Anthony

explained how AM Electrical fulfilled this, “We always ensure that we firstly identify the true vision and requirements the client has for the project, and secondly ensure the works and materials are being installed in line with the timeframe, quality level and stipulations of both the contract specification and of the client’s overall demands. “We employ a mechanism of regular contact with the client and their representatives to address or advise on any issues as they arise. We believe that by employing the above system to our projects, it allows us to be fluid, responsive and effective in the delivery of services. It also monitors and maintains project schedules and costs.” Commenting on the completed project, Anthony said, “We are delighted to have completed our largest project to date and the first hotel we have been involved with from the ground up. “We have worked with McKelvey

Construction for more than 10 years over a number of diverse projects and have established a close working relationship with them.” Since opening for business in 2007, AM Electrical has become a valuable asset to both main contractors and customers throughout the UK and Ireland. “To do this, we deployed extra resources, including materials and labour, to meet the tight schedule. We had to use readily available components to expedite the process, which meant at times we were using components of a higher specification than what was required by the consultant’s brief in order to achieve those delivery dates. “We also visited the site several times to ensure everything was proceeding as planned and to explore potential design improvements.” Commenting on the completed project, Niall said, “I believe everyone, from the builder right through to all the subcontractors, was aligned with the project’s goals and timelines. There was a shared commitment to the project’s success, and this collaboration was key to its smooth execution.”

An extensive metering system was employed to give remote access for all the critical supplies. Additionally, Sperrin Switchgear supplied equipment to control the kitchen appliances and
