S ince 2003, family-owned and-operated Los Portales Mexican Restaurant has delighted diners in the Glen Burnie, Maryland, area with authentic Mexican cuisine. Located near the BWI Airport and I-97 at Cromwell Business Park, the owners noticed there were no Mexican restaurants around and got to work creating a menu of staples including fresh guacamole, pollo ranchero, their “locally famous” fajitas and more.

Originally, Los Portales’ worked with a blank slate — four walls that the restaurant owners designed according to their needs, and St. John Properties staff helped accommodate them in the space. “They are very understanding with our needs.” said President Martha Ortiz. Los Portales’ growth over the years necessitated more space from St. John Properties. With ample parking spaces, a functional layout and convenient location, Cromwell Business Park offered all of the

qualities and features the Los Portales owners wanted and needed in their restaurant. Sharing the building with two other restaurants, Los Portales still drew in enough business to grow and take over an adjacent suite in 2007, expanding nearly half its size, from 3,250 square feet to a total of 4,865 square feet of restaurant space. “Over the years we needed to expand by getting an additional space close to the original,” said Ortiz. The restaurant has continued to grow, and now has 22 employees.

Ortiz said one of the biggest reasons they have stayed at their St. John Properties location is because of the St. John team’s prompt attention to inquiries, their attention to detail, and their proactive maintenance efforts. “We call them when we need something to be taken care of, and they come right away,” Ortiz said. “They are always checking, making sure everything is working properly. I think since they are a big company, they have the capacity to work things out — to help you do whatever you need to do with the space.”

Having originally occupied 9,000 square feet, they now lease 18,000 square feet to support their manufacturing and administrative teams. NFT’s highly skilled machinists are armed with knowledge and experience in working with a variety of materials including aluminum, titanium and more, and the company has manufactured components that have explored other planets, function in space, and enhance our world. NFT engineers and designers craft machine designs of varying complexity and size with a focus on design for maintenance and ease of use. Recently St. John Properties staff helped facilitate a major electrical upgrade

required for NFT’s machine shop. “The team hit every date on the schedule and were powered up with and cutting chips on schedule,” Brassell said. “It was impressive. We have always been very impressed with the level of attention and responses we have received over the years.”

Gil Brassell founded NFT in 1986, after working at Department of Energy facilities for over a decade. The company specializes in the creation of ventilation and packaging for the safe transportation and storage of nuclear materials and also stores nuclear materials and waste. Beginning with its NucFil Products, NFT grew to offer a wide variety of capabilities, expanding services and products for laboratory testing, laser welding, machine design and fabrication of structural platforms and railings, and more. “Our main reason for leasing with St. John was the quality of the property and location,” Brassell said. “The St. John team has been very helpful in assisting us with our needs for space as we have grown.” Situated conveniently near main thoroughfares, and about a five-minute drive from the renowned Red Rocks Amphitheatre, “The property is attractive, the management team is easy to
