IoPP Announces 2019 AmeriStar Award Winners Twenty-seven winners have been selected as recipi- ents of a 2019 AmeriStar Award, a design award for the packaging industry, produced by IoPP,The Institute of Packaging Professionals. A roster of judges from various segments of the pack- aging industry evaluated this year’s entries in person, examining package innovation, product protection, economics, performance, marketing and environmen- tal impact. The top three AmeriStar awards include the Sustain- able Package Award, the Design Excellence Award and the Best of ShowAward. Best of Show Award went to Clinique iD by Estée Lauder Companies. One of Colombia’s leading manufacturing suppli- ers of flexible packaging, Flex Pack SAS, has installed Flexo Wash technology at its plant in Bogota to help improve the quality of work being produced on its two flexo printing presses. Founded in 2001 and still owned and managed by Carlos Alberto González and his wife Maribel Jácome, the company is vertically in- tegrated offering a variety of services in-house from extrusion to rolling, printing, and valve inserting. Cur- rently around 90 percent of all output is printed, and then supplied to markets as diverse as food and bever- age, household goods, and medical supplies. It was with the advent of its second printing press in 2018 that Flex Pack realized the need to improve its overall production efficiency. Following a visit to Label- expo in Chicago, Illinois, and a meeting with the Flexo Wash team, the decision was made to invest in a PW- 82WR PlateWasher and an FW992XL AniloxWasher. According González, the machines have trans- formed Flex Pack’s capability to reduce cleaning times and brought a degree of automation to the production process. Since installation of the FlexoWash technology, Flex Pack has seen a noticeable improvement in print qual-

New Graphic Arts Coalition Formed

A group of associations, educators and industry representatives has formed the Graphic Communica- tions Workforce Coalition. As stated in its organizing documents, “The purpose of the coalition will be to coordinate the efforts of all organizations represent- ing the broad scope of the graphic communications industry for creating awareness, recruitment of new people into the industry, providing a framework for ap- prenticeship and training programs, and the retention of the existing workforce. By combining the separate efforts, experiences and initiatives of various organi- zations, coordinating actions and the sharing of ideas and resources, it is expected that all will benefit.” This new initiative will address the number one issue that faces the industry today: recruitment, retention and training of its workforce. Numerous studies and surveys have documented that this is a major concern for nearly every company in the industry. Various as- sociations and individual companies have taken steps to address this issue, but there has never been an or- ganized joint effort. The Coalition will seek to bring together and focus efforts and energy. Membership will be open to interested parties representing a broad spectrum of the graphic com- munications industry. This will include associations, vendors to the industry, educational institutions and all areas of print and graphic communications service providers. The Coalition will be forming a board of directors and electing officers at the end of June. While some two dozen organizations are al- ready involved in the process, all interested parties are encouraged to join. For more information, visit https://app.donor- view.com/kwMW . New Corrugated Antitrust Training Video Available AICC,The Independent Packaging Association, Fibre Box Association (FBA), and the International Corrugat- ed Packaging Foundation (ICPF) have released a new antitrust training video. The video is a collaboration with Foley & Lardner, FBA’s legal counsel, to educate corrugated and paperboard industry employees about what antitrust laws require and how to make sure em- ployees and their companies are compliant. The video teaches what antitrust law is, along with basic principles and guidelines to follow to avoid cost- ly violations that could cause lasting and significant harm to corrugated employees, their companies, and the entire corrugated industry. The video can be ac- cessed at AICCbox.org/antitrustvideo .

Stora Enso To Convert Oulu Paper Mill

in Switzerland last year, the Digital Inspection Table in- corporates digital projection for the proofing of printed sheets and die-cut blanks, whilst providing real-time visu- al representations to match product with digital proofs.

Stora Enso will invest approximately EUR 350 mil- lion to convert the Oulu paper mill in Finland into packaging production. The investment will include a new world-class line for virgin-fibre based kraftliner (both brown and white-top) with an annual capacity of 450,000 tons, the modification of the pulp mill and drying machine for unbleached brown pulp, as well as investments to enhance the mill’s environmental per- formance. The project will start with ground work in the summer of 2019, and about 200 contractors will work at the Oulu Mill site during the project. Bobst Wins Award For Digital Inspection Table BOBST’s Digital Inspection Table was named winner in the Best Inspection System category at the 2019 Eu- ropean Digital Press Association (EDP) Awards. Now in its 13th year, the EDP Awards honor the best technological developments in the digital print world, with judging criteria including achievement, quality and costs. EFIA To Host Second Sustainability Meeting

The European Flexographic Industry Association (EFIA) is to shortly host its second sustainability fo- cused breakfast meeting, addressing the need for edu- cation both in the industry and for consumers to meet the challenges of the ‘Blue Planet Effect’. EFIA hosted a similar meeting in September 2018, where insights and discussions concluded that the flexographic printing community must collaborate, innovate, legislate and educate to ensure the industry continues to keep up with social and market trends in relation to sustainability. The next EFIA sustainability breakfast meeting on June 14 will focus on the education element of these findings. Topics to be covered include the education of customers and the unique challenges presented, as well as how the industry is educating and upskilling its own workforce to meet the needs of the future mar- ket environment. The event will be taking place at the Gary Speed Suite of Elland Road, Leeds.

reads:“TLMI will quantify the commitment of its mem- bers to sustainability and reducing negative environ- mental and social impacts.” Moving forward, TLMI will quantify and report on ways the association’s member companies are com- mitted to environmental and social best practices.TL- MI’s goal is to aggregate and publish data that demon- strate to the greater industry supply chain that TLMI’s membership is actively pursuing best practices and is a progressive, sustainability-minded entity. Outreach will be directed toward label customers and packag- ing buyers, converters and suppliers, and students and recent graduates contemplating entry into the indus- try for the first time. TLMI’s primary goal and objectives in implementing the program includes the following: Goal : TLMI member companies will progressively become more sustainable as businesses and TLMI will quantify and report on the commitment of its mem- bers to sustainability. Objectives : By 2022 at least 50 percent of TLMI members will have publicly disclosed one or more sustainability goals that commits to reducing negative environmental and/or social impacts over time, and by 2025, 100 percent. By 2022, at least 50 percent of TLMI members will re- quest their major suppliers to have publicly disclosed sustainability goals, and by 2025, 100 percent. “TLMI’s ultimate goal is to provide evidence in the form of data to our members, our members’ customers and to new graduates entering our workforce that strongly conveys that the label industry cares about sustainability and is actively working to improve impacts on the envi- ronment,” Rosalyn Bandy,TLMI vice president of sustain- ability, commented.“We have many members who are ex- tremely innovative when it comes to environmental best practices and other members who will be introducing programs in the coming year.Whether it’s zero percent waste-to-landfill, using renewable energy to power their plants or ensuring that their labels do not negatively im- pact the recyclability of the containers on which they are affixed;we will be quantifying member commitment in order to become a valuable resource to brands, pack- aging buyers and workers potentially entering our indus- try for the first time. Also falling under the umbrella of sustainability are practices like committing to having a diverse workforce with certain percentages of women and minorities. This is something that new graduates are looking for and hold as a high priority in choosing their future career paths. This new program is going to help our members better position themselves both to their customers, and to potential new hires.”

Flexo’s Future

Katie Graham Marketing and Communications Manager Pamarco Often overlooked at first glance, it doesn’t take long to see the value that education is bringing to our in- dustry. As someone who’s been in this

business for quite some time, experience has shown me what an incredible resource is at our fingertips if we consider the number of universities and programs supporting the print and packaging industry that are available today. It’s such a large sphere that it can feel overwhelming to think about how to make an impact as an individual. I’m here to tell you that it can be done with ease, and it’s actually quite a privilege. To begin, take a look at the geography of our nation: we’re spread out. Because of this, opportunities vary based on your physical location. Some of the univer- sities we look to as standard-setters, like Rochester In- stitute of Technology, aren’t the ideal option for every business to be closely engaged with or for students to attend. It’s important to look around and see what your choices really are. In my area, for example, we are in close proximity to Clemson University; a school with great programs for those interested in the print- ing and packaging industry. Making Connections Once you find your local options, the best way to connect is to simply be visible. Offer yourself as a guest speaker on a subject in which you’re an expert, or extend your services as a mentor for those interest- ed in your field. It’s a great way to meet the students going through the program, share your knowledge with them, and to become a champion of support as they make their way through the challenges of finding a full-time job fresh out of school. Another way to make an impact is to establish an internship program based on manufacturing, sales or technical services. In doing so, you’ll provide students with the opportunity to work in the real environment while also helping our businesses hone in on real tal- ent to support future growth. Internships afford stu- dents the chance to see different career paths in ac- tion and align their goals accordingly. On a larger scale, companies can encourage educa- tion by supporting organizations like FTA,TAPPI, and AICC.These organizations provide many avenues that educate, motivate and propel our industry forward. Continued education within the workplace, for anoth-

Flexo’s Future (Cont’d from Page 11) er example, supplies our businesses with the chance to create a community of employees who are mean- ingfully engaged with their company and clients. It also helps these individuals to produce increasing lev- els of value in their daily activities — great for personal and company-wide growth. Statistics tell us that the generation stepping out of college today will have more jobs throughout their career than you or I have had. In order to captivate their long-term attention,we need to establish them in positions that are challenging; not another daily grind, but a fulfilling occupation with an identifiable path forward. The average employee wants more than a job — they want a career and a real future. So to be an individual making an impact in our indus- try, focus on the schools that provide specific training for the flexographic printing and packaging industry. By building those relationships, we create a conduit for qualified young adults to enter the business and help it grow. And by incentivizing internal recruitment, we can further encourage a culture of education and growth by bringing in those in the circles closest to us. Think it over: who can you impact today? The Independent Carton Group (ICG), an association of independently owned and operated folding carton manufacturers, has welcomed Outlook Group of Neen- ah, Wisconsin, to its member roster. Outlook Group was approved for membership during the ICG’s most recent general membership meeting in Miami, Florida, which was hosted by Vista Color. Outlook Group was founded in 1977 as a provider of printing and mailing services. Direct mail and sports trading cards served as the company’s primary mar- kets well into the 1980s. Over the past few decades, as Outlook Group has grown, it has also expanded into other lines of business, including several types of pack- aging. Today, it has four distinct verticals under one roof: folding cartons, flexible packaging, pressure-sen- sitive labels and contract packaging. Like many ICG member companies, Outlook Group serves diverse industries, including food and bever- age, medical and personal care, and other consumer goods. The company’s broad range of printing capabil- ities — flexographic, offset, digital, and variable — are complemented by a portfolio of services aimed at sup- porting and streamlining clients’ supply chains.
